One of my favorite swimming holes is downstream from a dam that occasionally needs to let some water out of its reservoir. This basically transforms the quiet little swimming hole into a roaring vortex of doom. Care for a swim anyone?
Vortex is the Pitbull in the picture. When we bought a house and had the extra room, we decided Gracie, the Boston Terrier in the picture, needed a buddy. We went to the local shelter. we wanted a bigger dog and were drawn to Pitbulls because there are so many in shelters and they are usually the first to get euthanized because of their reputation of fighting and aggressiveness. We went in to find our new pet on the first day Vortex was brought in. He was a stray. We instantly fell in love with him. There was a 5 day waiting period on strays. Between the two of us, at least one of use visited him everyday, taking Gracie with us several times so they could play and adapt to eachother. We were so excited when we were able to bring him home. Pitbulls are definitely misunderstood and end up in the hands of the wrong people. Vortex is a big baby who just wants to lick you and lay on your lap. He's a 60-65lb lapdog. He is actually kind of afraid of little Gracie. When they play, he is the one who backs off. Vortex is kind and gentle, and a huge cuddle buddy. My husband and I couldn't have made a better choice. we are so glad we could save him.
I didn't catch the singer's name. She was a surprise guest and very good. Someone new, I wish her luck. This was, as Gilad pointed out, an evening of experimentation. Jazz is full of surprises.
As part of VORTEX-Southeast, CIMMS Researcher Kim Klockow-McClain visited Alabama and Georgia months after a devastating tornado killed 23 people and injured numerous others in 2019.
She is researching why that storm system was so deadly. She is a societal impacts and behavioral insights researcher whose work supports NOAA National Severe Storms Laboratory.
