About the Artist: Michael Scheiner

Michael Scheiner is committed to the notion that ideas are as important as craftsmanship.

His sculpture uses glass and other materials as a means for thinking visually, giving shape to concepts like progress and direction.

Scheiner has worked as an artist and educator actively exhibiting and teaching internationally since 1982, when he received his graduate degree from Ohio State University.

In 1983, he joined the glass department faculty at the Rhode Island School of Design, where he taught until he moved to Japan in 2004. There, as professor in the Department of Formative Arts at Nagoya University of Arts, he developed and ran the school’s Glass Department for eight years.

Today he is the head of Keer Glass Foundry, a Rhode Island company that specializes in custom glass design and fabrication where he and his team of glassworkers help artists realize their ideas in glass.

Interpretive Text

What you can’t see in this artwork is as important as what you can. A form is visible in this leaning stack of commercial float glass panels. While living in Japan, Michael Scheiner found a large rock he considered to be perfect. He had the rock cut into thin sections that he traced onto paper. From the paper, he painted the rock sections onto the glass panels with diluted clay, creating a “sheer volume” that floats in the transparency of the glass.

The Studio at 20

The Studio has been a starting point for emerging artists and an incubator for new work by established artists since 1996. To celebrate 20 years, we’re highlighting works in the Museum’s permanent collection created by artists who have taught or who have been artists in residence at The Studio. Pieces by this artistic community can be found in the Glass Collection Galleries, where they are identified by the Studio at 20 symbol.
