A trip on the Welsh Highland Railway from Caernarfon to Porthmadog, 12 October 2019. A view from the 1000 Caernarfon to Porthmadog as it climbs towards Rhyd-ddu, looking down to Llyn Cwellyn, with 698m Mynydd Mawr (Big Mountain) on the left, whilst on the right the highest point is Moel Eilio (726 m).
Llyn Cwellyn is a reservoir, dammed at the north end, although this has not greatly enlarged the volume of water of this natural glaciated lake, which supplies water to much of Gwynedd and of Anglesey. It is quite deep, some 37 m maximum, and is home to the rare (at least for the UK) Arctic char as well as brown trout.

The entrance of Arnhem Central Station.
Arnhem Centraal railway station is the largest railway station in the city of Arnhem in Gelderland, Netherlands. It was opened on 14 May 1845 and is located on the Amsterdam–Arnhem railway, the Arnhem–Leeuwarden railway and the Arnhem–Nijmegen railway. The station opened at the same time as the Amsterdam–Arnhem railway, that continues into Germany via the Oberhausen–Arnhem railway.
Building:
The station is the main station of Arnhem, and at present, has around 40,000 passengers that use the station per day, this makes it the 9th busiest station in the Netherlands. The main building has a surface of 18,000 m2 and a volume of 76,000 m3, the building has a capacity of 110.000 transfers per day.
In 2006 a reconstruction of the complete station area started. In October of that year, a temporary station entrance opened, that could only be reached by three sets of stairs (or by elevators). On July 2, 2011, a new tunnel under the platforms opened. The temporary entrance closed down and dismantled in the Autumn of 2011. As of that period the railway consists of 4 platforms including a footbridge connecting all platforms.
During the summer of 2011 a new dive under was created west of the station which allows trains to Nijmegen and Utrecht to underpass all tracks without interfering the other train services. All traffic on the western part of the station was completely suspended during 5 weeks. Drive under officially opened on the 29 of August in 2011. The official re-opening of the completed station was on 19 November 2015, on this day the station was renamed Arnhem Centraal, formerly it had just been Arnhem.
The new design of the railway station was created by UNStudio in collaboration with Cecil Balmond at Aurp AGU. It won the Dutch Nationale Staalprijs.

I needed to warm up for the night shot. To get into the comfort zone for me a natural start was to go for Black & White pictures. This trip's theme was long exposures with water. The hydro-station at Boen would be a good starting point. You can really feel the change in air pressure as you climb along the massive waterfall. You're really met with a huge roaring volume of water.
This is the tail of a Blue Whale; the largest animal on the planet. The tail on this individual would be about 25 feet across and you can see a large volume of water cascading off the back. Not all Blue Whales show their tail when they deep dive, but an individual that flukes will usually fluke each time it deep dives. This one was a habitual fluker so we stayed with it for a while, but only 2 of the 14 Blue Whales we saw on this trip were flukers.

Iceland
Huldujökull is part of the larger Mýrdalsjökull glacier and forms a horseshoe-shaped valley with numerous waterfalls cascading directly from the glacier into the valley below. The size and volume of some of these waterfalls are epic.
The Huldujökull hike in Þakgil leads along a beautiful valley.
The landscape is typically Icelandic, and you can practically see the forces of nature that shaped it. A stunning area of Iceland that still offers hikes in seclusion. Þakgil offers the best hiking trails near Vík.
Long story... But these cops turned out to be some of the nicest guys in uniforms I've met in a long time. They were really interested with the ability to ride backwards so we let them have a try. They got half a backwards circle and a few track stands. Not bad for the first ride on a fixed gear. I've been having a rough year with cops so it was a nice year end reminder that not all cops are dicks. These guys were super nice. And down with fixed gears!
A late afternoon winter view from the brink of the Upper Tahquamenon Falls- -temperature 5°F / -15°C- -the centre of the falls has become an ice wall. A two second exposure with a Hoya NDX16 four stop solid neutral density filter on a Fuji XE1 + XF 18-55mm.
The upper falls are more 60m / 200 feet across with a drop of approximately 15m / 50 feet with a peak spring runoff volume of nearly 200,000L / 50,000 gallons per second- -making the upper falls one of the largest waterfalls east of the Mississippi River. The upper falls lie with in Michigan's Tahquamenon Falls State Park, Luce County. The yellowish / brown colour of the water stems from tannins leached from cedar swamps from the rivers watershed. The foam on the river results from the combination of soft water (low mineral concentration), lignin proteins from decaying organic matter, and turbidity. The Upper Tahquamenon Falls are a 75 mile / 120 kilometer drive from Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan.

Mariposa Grove is a sequoia grove located near Wawona, California, USA, in the southernmost part of Yosemite National Park, It is the largest grove of Giant Sequoias in the park, with several hundred mature examples of the tree. Two of its trees are among the 25 largest Giant Sequoias in the world.
The Mariposa Grove was first visited by non-natives in 1857 when Galen Clark and Milton Mann found it.They named the grove after Mariposa County, California, where the grove resides.
The Giant Sequoia named Grizzly Giant is between probably 1900-2400 years old: the oldest tree in the grove.In 1932, it was claimed to be the fifth largest (by volume) tree in the world, but other trees were subsequently found to be larger; it currently has a volume of 34,010 cubic feet (963 m3), only the 25th largest. It is 210 feet (64 m) tall, and has a heavily buttressed base with a basal circumference of 28 m (92 ft) or a diameter of 30 feet (9.1 m); above the buttresses at 2.4 m above ground, the circumference is only 23 m. Grizzly Giant's first branch from its base is itself 2 m (6 ft) in diameter.
Another tree, the Wawona Tree, had a tunnel wide enough for horse-drawn carriages and early automobiles to drive through, cut through it in the nineteenth century. Weakened by this large opening at its base, the tree fell down in 1969.
Abraham Lincoln signed an Act of Congress on June 30, 1864 ceding the "Mariposa Big Tree Grove" (and Yosemite Valley) to the state of California; criticism of the stewardship over the land led to the state returning the grove to federal control upon establishment of Yosemite National Park.
The Mariposa Grove Museum is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

and my collard greens recipe:
16 oz of fresh collard greens, washed well
3 strips of thick-cut bourbon bacon cut in 1” slices
1/4 cup sweet onion finely minced
1 tbsp crushed garlic
2 cups turkey stock
2 tsp smoked sea salt
2 tbsp brown sugar
1-2 tsp red pepper flakes
In a Dutch oven cook the bacon until almost crisp over medium heat. Pour off all but about 3 tablespoons of the fat. Add the diced onion and cook until translucent, about 3 minutes. Add the garlic and cook for another minute. Deglaze the bottom of the pot with some stock. Put all of the greens in the pot, pour in the stock, and cover continuing to cook over medium heat. In about 5-10 minutes the volume of the greens will decrease. Using a sturdy wooden spoon carefully turn over the greens so that the bacon and onions get mixed well all over the greens. Add the sugar, salt, and pepper flakes, stir again. Bring to a boil. Cover and reduce heat to low. Simmer for two hours and serve.

The volume of snow locally has gone down quite a bit since this was taken. However, there's another winter storm on the way.
I really liked the BP build and wanted to do things reminiscent of it. My lost BL order came today after I built this hopelessly in spite of my loss and was going to just put the volume one suit in there but now I have a proper Miles which makes me very happy.
The numbers for this afternoons sunset had been good since Monday ... and didn't change.
Got to the harbour with a half hour to spare and hoped that things might pan out for those old slipway rails that I'm so fond of.

Pretty excited about this volume, not only because it's beautiful & always exciting to receive in the mail, but because I got a chance to contribute. I, with the help of Eric, (who is honestly much better with words) wrote an essay about taking the time to slow down and enjoy brewing coffee in the morning. The essay is featured next to photos by the talented Chantelle Grady, who photographed a Kyoto drip coffee maker & a page with different old time brewing methods.
There's a few more shots on the blog as well, along with pictures of our homemade s'mores that turned out far better than I thought- I'll just say that graham cracker dough is stickier than I expected!

Wolf creek falls near Prescott Arizona is quite a dynamic place. During the summer months, it is mostly dry with only a trickle of water running over the sculpted granite. As the freezing and thawing cycles of winter get going, it gets cold enough to turn into an amazing Ice fall. In the spting, when the ice and snow melts, it becomes a beautifull waterfall. then the water slowly decreases in volume until monsoon rains bring it to life yet again.
This was taken on a partly cloudy day, so I kept waiting for the clouds to smooth out the harsh light, then shoot, then wait some more...on this photo, just as I pressed the shutter, a little sunlight poked through right on the waterfall lighting it up.

Carl Benz (1844–1929) made the 1886 Benz Patent Motorwagen, which is widely regarded as the first automobile.
Mercedes-Benz traces its origins to Carl Benz's first internal combustion engine in a car, seen in the Benz Patent-Motorwagen – financed by Bertha Benz's dowry[10] and patented in January 1886[11] – and Gottlieb Daimler and its engineer Wilhelm Maybach's conversion of a stagecoach, with the addition of a petrol engine, introduced later that year. The Mercedes automobile was first marketed in 1901 by Daimler Motoren Gesellschaft (DMG).
Emil Jellinek, an Austrian automobile entrepreneur who worked with DMG, registered the trademark in 1902, naming the 1901 Mercedes 35 hp after his daughter Mercédès Jellinek. Jellinek was a businessman and marketing strategist who promoted "horseless" Daimler automobiles among the highest circles of society. At the time, it was a meeting place for the haute volée of France and Europe, especially in winter. Gottlieb Daimler was born on 17 March 1834 in Schorndorf. After training as a gunsmith and working in France, he attended the Polytechnic School in Stuttgart from 1857 to 1859. After completing various technical activities in France and England, he started working as a draftsman in Geislingen in 1862.
