Oldsmobile was established in 1896, but built few cars before 1899, when copper and lumber magnate S.L.Smith bought the company as a lucrative hobby for his two sons.
Originally there were plans for 1 $1250 luxury car with pneumatic clutch and electric starter, but it failed to sell.
Production took off from 1901 with the launch of the immortal Curved Dash Oldsmobile The gasoline-powered Oldsmobile Model R, also known as the Curved Dash Oldsmobile,[ also credited with being the first mass-produced automobile, built on an assembly line using interchangeable parts. over 19,000 were built in all, before production ceased in 1908 following the companies takeover by General Motors.It was a runabout model, could seat two passengers, and sold for US$650. While competitive, due to high volume, and priced below the US$850 two-seat Ford Model C. The flat-mounted, water-cooled, single-cylinder engine, situated at the centre of the car, produced 5 hp. relying on a brass gravity feed carburettor. The transmission was a semiautomatic design with two forward speeds and one reverse. The car weighed 850lbs and had a top speed of 20mph
In 1904, the Model R was replaced by the Model 6C, which had a larger 1,931 cc engine; in addition, drum brakes replaced the band brake. After 2,234 copies, the 6C model was discontinued in December 1904, to be replaced by the updated Model B, engine received improved cooling and a new flywheel, and the handbrake now worked on the differential instead of the gearbox. The leaf spring suspension was modified so that the reinforced axles were connected to all spring elements. In 1906, the car received celluloid side window curtains. What with the pace and excitement of EdBookFest over these past two weeks I've barely managed to acknowledge the fact that during this time the Bristol Short Story Prize Anthology Volume 4 - one of the most hotly anticipated anthologies of the year for me - dropped through the letter box at RobAround Manor. I've been able to sit down and take stock of things today though, and it's sunk in that what I have before me is what I hope will be another thrilling journey through the story landscapes of 20 exceptionally talented writers.
Truth be told I couldn't contain myself, and I just had to dip in and read this year's winning story, My Girl by Emily Bullock. What did I think? Well, I've still to post my official review for the story, but I will say that it's as punch in the guts powerful (quite literally), as last year's winner was (The Bristol Short Story Prize judges certainly like stories with impact :))
While I'm at it, a huge thumbs-up to the winning designer for this year's cover, Claire Shorrock, a 2011 graduate of the Illustration degree course at the University of the West of England in Bristol. It's difficult to tell from my amateurish snapshot just how good this cover looks, but trust me it's beautiful. Great job, Claire!

The demonstration, on the 11/06/11 at Sevilla Town Hall, was part of the 15M movement by the 'Indignados' protesting against an unrepresentative and undemocratic political system. The protests are well organised and peaceful and involve a wide spectrum of society. They were sparked by issues such as the banking crisis, high levels of unemployment (especially youth unemployment which stands at around 40%), poverty and a stale two party electoral system.

I've been on Flickr since July 4, 2005. While I can't pretend to know the exact numbers, I am certain the Flickr universe has expanded enormously over the past three plus years. I read somewhere recently something like five thousand images are uploaded per minute (and that information may well have been several years old). In any event, it is clear there are lots more photos - and lots more people - on Flickr.
And that's a good thing, except when it isn't.
It's good of course because there are not only more photos; there are lots more good photographs from a widely diverse Flickr membership. I am a huge fan of landscape photography. I love seeing great landscapes from all over the world. Many of them take my breath away. I could say the same thing about portraiture, or macros, or black and whites, or any of the other catergories of photography that turn me on. There have always been great photographers on Flickr. Now there seem to be thousands and thousands of them. Some of them are so great their images make me weep.
I use Flickr as a learning tool. I probably look at anywhere from one hundred to five hundred photos a day. I try to gauge what works or doesn't work in an image. I look for novel points of view, or subjects. I look at EXIF data whenever I can to learn the camera settings which produced a good shot (and I read group notes to learn even more). The better Flickr photos get the better I get as a photographer. While I read articles and books on photography, I believe that, next to taking and working with my own photos, Flickr is the best learning tool I have.
Now for the downside: Flickr obsession, that emotional pull to make Flickr the center of your life, that need to post and post and post and post, to run a myriad of groups and participate in dozens of group discussions, and to comment on hundreds of others' photos, until you suddenly realize its almost two in the morning - for the fifth night in a row! There is the childish need to count how many hits each of your beloved images has, how many faves it has, and to pout if it doesn't have enough hits or faves, to feel under appreciated and to resent that guy with more hits than you. And, worse of all, there are those ocasional negative comments that depress or anger you. You know you are over the line and in need of serious help when you start to have dreams and nightmares about Flickr night after night after night.
I must confess I've had several bouts of Flickr obsession. Indeed, I may be enthralled even now. I am fighting it, I am vowing to take a break. I think I can do it. Maybe. At least I hope so. My wife is giving me those looks again. But I might wait wait till next week, or until the holidays. Perhaps a New Year's resolution is the way to go....
Flickr is a wonder. I can think of no better example of how the Internet has changed my life. But sometimes it is like crack cocaine; it can take over my life. I just wonder how much that is true for the rest of the population of Flickr Nation. Care to comment? We could start a group!!
