In some sense, the American Indians were given the worst ground for their reservations. However, the Navajo Nation in Arizona has some amazing scenery including Monument Valley.

The Navajos are very spiritual and connected to the land. Every feature and formation has a sacred meaning to them.

A setting looking to the northwest while taking in views to nearby hillsides with some volcanic, eroded pinnacle formations. I then moved around until I could bring out more of a layered look with some trees on a nearby hillside.

A setting looking to the northeast while taking in views across eroded volcanic formations and hillsides present while walking the Prewett Point Trail in Pinnacles National Park. Given the height I was located and the open area below leading to the more distant hillsides and mountains, I decided to angle my Nikon SLR, camera slightly downward and create a sweeping view looking across this national park landscape. The other thing I had to keep in mind while composing this image was to meter it properly to capture an exposure of both the area that filled most of the lower portion of the image, caught in shadows, with that of the more distant hillsides and mountains caught in the glow of late afternoon sunlight. Composing the image was a matter of lining up the ridgeline coming off the High Peaks and the Balconies volcanic formation, in such a way that it kind of balanced with the canyon in the middle image left.

I later worked with control points in DxO PhotoLab 6 and then made some adjustments to bring out the contrast, saturation and brightness I wanted for the final image.

A setting looking to the west-northwest while taking in views across eroded volcanic formations present in this part of Pinnacles National Park. With this image, I used an idea I got from Flickr and other photography sites to hold a compass in hand with a more distant view beyond. For this location, I used Resurrection Wall and The Fingers as the backdrop.

While walking the Moses Spring Trail and taking in views at Bear Gulch Reservoir. The setting is looking to the southwest in Pinnacles National Park.

While hiking the Juniper Canyon Loop with a view looking to the east at eroded volcanic formations. This is looking to the High Peaks and is in Pinnacles National Park.

While walking the High Peaks Trail with a view looking to the west to Resurrection Wall and the Fingers in this part of Pinnacles National Park. My thought on composing this image was to take advantage of the high ground I was on and angle my Nikon SLR camera slightly downward to create a more sweeping view across this landscape with the eroded volcanic formations and then more distant ridges and peaks.

A setting looking to the south while taking in views across ridges and peaks in Pinnacles National Park. This while while walking the High Peaks Trail. I had to adjust the metering as I exposed the image, as I was more or less, looking in the direction of the sun high up in the skies.

There are few coasts with the variety and beauty of the Causeway Coast of North Antrim and Derry, and probably the most famous part is the Giant’s Causeway. This photograph features a formation Morning Mary has never seen or heard of before – “Nurse and Child’s Rock” is a rugged piece of stone. Is it still standing, and where exactly is it?

A setting looking to the northeast to the Balconies (left) and other rock formations and volcanic leftovers coming off of Machete Ridge (right). This is in Pinnacles National Park while walking the Balconies Cave Loop. My thought on composing this image was to have a more or less leveled on view, looking across the wild grasses and sage brushes to those rock formations. The blue skies and clouds would be that color contrast to complement the earth-tones in the lower portion of the image.

While at a roadside pullout along the main park road in the western side of Pinnacles National Park. The view is looking to the northeast to the Balconies with the rock formations and volcanic leftovers present. My thought on composing this image was to capture a look beyond some nearby trees to that formation off in the distance.

A setting looking to the east-northeast while taking in views across eroded volcanic formations present in the High Peaks in this part of Pinnacles National Park. I captured this image while I was hiking the Juniper Canyon Loop. I did some initial post-processing work making adjustments to contrast, brightness and saturation while playing around as I learned how to work with DxO PhotoLab 6. I then exported a TIFF image to Nik Color Efex Pro 5 where I added a Polarization, Foliage, and Pro Contrast filter for that last effect on the image captured.

Late in the afternoon at Sumner beach September 16, 2015 Christchurch New Zealand.

Sumner is a coastal seaside suburb of Christchurch. On 22 February 2011, Sumner was hit by the Christchurch earthquake, which destroyed or made uninhabitable a large number of the local houses and commercial buildings. On 13 June the same year, Sumner was hit by another earthquake of almost the same magnitude as the February event. These two earthquakes caused many of Sumner's iconic cliffs to collapse, and many areas to be cordoned off with both traditional fences and, more interestingly, shipping containers.

My thought on composing this image was to find a balance between the formations in the lower portion of the image with the blue skies and that one long cloud wisp.

Up close, the lava at Sullivan Bay is even more fascinating. You can see the delicate textures and swirling patterns formed as the molten rock cooled and solidified over a century ago. It’s called ‘pahoehoe’ lava—a Hawaiian term for smooth, rope-like flows. Some areas look like they’re still moving, frozen mid-flow. It’s strange to think this complex, silent surface was once glowing and unstoppable. A small detail, but it tells a big part of the Galápagos story.

In the heart of Catamarca’s Puna, the natural sculptures of Campo de Piedra Pómez rise between 3,000 and 4,800 m, remnants of ancient eruptions carved by millennia of erosion. The chalk‑white forms contrast with dark lava slopes and Andean peaks, in a protected area since 2012 that is reached from El Peñón and Antofagasta de la Sierra.

While on a morning hike along the Moses Spring Trail with a view looking to the north-northwest at a cliff wall with some climbers working their way up a climbing wall. This is in Pinnacles National Park. My thought on composing this image was to pull back a little bit on the focal length to include some of the nearby surroundings with the cliff wall and trees. My focus though and what I centered with the image was the three people who were in the process of climbing.

While walking the High Peaks Trail in Pinnacles National Park. The view is looking down a rock face and to the north. My thought in composing this image was to capture that look along the path I’d just walked up with the notches for going up the face. The railing is for support in the walk up the rock face.

The Rock you can see is Cave Rock.. Cave Rock is an unusual volcanic formation on Sumner Beach. For many years it has provided a playground for Christchurch children visiting the beach. Māori call the rock Tuawera, and say that it represents the carcass of a legendary whale washed up on the beach.

While walking the Condor Gulch Trail in Pinnacles National Park with a view looking uphill and to the west-northwest across a hillside of trees leading up to the namesake pinnacle formations. I would be walking amongst those high peaks later that morning.

Captured at the coastal area of Biscoitos on Terceira Island in the Azores, this photograph showcases the volcanic rocks enveloped in a misty, ethereal atmosphere. The long exposure technique creates a dreamy effect, blurring the water and creating a soft, almost surreal mood. Biscoitos is known for its natural swimming pools formed by volcanic activity, and this image highlights the tranquil and mystical beauty of this unique landscape.

A setting looking west to the moon seemingly hanging over a nearby ridge at a roadside pullout in Pinnacles National Park. My thought on composing this image was to find a balance between the ridge crossing to my front with that of the moon, hanging in the skies above. I exposed for the highlights, knowing I could pull out the more shadowed areas later in post-production.

Captured at Playa del los Clicos in Lanzarote, this photograph reveals the striking contrast between volcanic rock, emerald lagoon, and Atlantic blue. It’s a landscape shaped by raw geological forces, yet it feels almost surreal, as if belonging to another planet.

My thought on composing this image was to pull back on the focal length and have a wide angle capture of this setting, looking across the High Peaks to the Balconies in this part of the national park. The rest of my thought was metering the image properly, to not blow any of the highlights in the portion caught in sunlight, yet being able to pull out the more shadowed areas later in post-production.

Everywhere you look there is a new vista with different rock formations in this wonderful world of nature.

I'm heading up CA Hwy 395 for a photo safari at June Lake west of Bishop. The clouds ahead don't give me much hope for a sunny day to shoot. But we take what we get, and even a horizon full of storm clouds makes a dramatic scene.

Scattered pine trees struggle to grow on volcanic rocks above Crater Lake.

The weather was strong - with days where the wind was over 30m/s but never the less the Icelandic beauty was on full display. These images are from a brief roadtrip along the South Coast.
