DESIGN IN FOCUS: EX-FORMATION – MAKE THINGS UNKNOWN
Not to make things known, but to make things unknown. Not only to provide ample information, but also to make people aware of how little they know about it. How can design help people to visualize the world afresh?

Connections are a part of us, of the world. From the connections between people, between cultures, within language, and more. In these days when more data is collected daily than we could ever hope to explore, the variety in connections being gathered is opening up the possibility to visualize these (often complex) networks.
During this talk, Nadieh will take you through the design process of several of her (interactive) data visualization works, from personal projects to client work. The common thread they all share; they all reveal connections, but all differently. From a family tree of 3000 people connected to the European Royal houses, to those existing between our Intangible Cultural Heritage created for UNESCO, to connections we have drawn in the night skies and more.

Hashimoto Contemporary is pleased to present In the Abstract, a group exhibition curated by Dasha Matsuura featuring new works by Abel Macias, Ellen Rutt, Rachel Strum and Madeleine Tonzi. Each artist brings a fresh perspective to contemporary abstraction, from geometric shapes to the suggestion of surreal forms.
Ranging from the purely abstract patterns in Ellen Rutt's textile based works to the loose landscape references of Abel Macias' work, each of the artists featured express intangible moments in each piece. Rachel Strum's (pictured above) work blaze in a riot of color and texture, creating a cosmic depth in each color field. Working with reclaimed and scrap textiles, Ellen Rutt engages the tradition of quilting in times of crisis to create fluid patterns and bold compositions.
Punctuating her works with points of entry, Madeleine Tonzi's paintings float across blush toned planes dotted with surreal architectural structures. Abel Macias' gestural paintings examine texture and pattern while intimating a natural space and visualizing a warm summer breeze. Each of the artists featured creates a non- specific space for the viewer to pour into.
The startup I work at did a friendly type of launch today, making our service Fidg't available to public eyes.
The basic 1 line description is that we take your contacts from various social networking services (we're starting small, supporting all the chat networks + flickr + lastfm) and their services together into a meta/reference contact. We then have 3 main utilities for that aggregated list:
1. A mobile client that runs on most Nokia Nseries phones, giving you social media browsing + chat.
2. Desktop visualization tool that lets you import and visualize media + tags from your aggregated Fidg't network, or from random flickr or lastfm networks (pictured, becuase it looks the coolest)
3. Web tools that let you manage this list of people, including the ability to activate/deactivate contacts, create new groupings, or import new contacts into your list.
Anyway, if you have a minute, check it out, report bugs or try to break it. The service is definitely not super robust at this point, but we just wanted to get it out there and gather some feedback.
The Radar Chart shows an area of skill - SSIS Package Development. The basic facets of skill are listed and charted on a scale of 1 for basic to 5 for expert. One can show improvement in skills from one time frame to the next, show skill levels needed for recruits and so forth.
I always set up photo shoots in my head. I need some new pictures for my black/white wall. My vision of this photograph didn't come out the exact way I wanted. But, with me in the photo and a 1 yr old, it wasn't easy. I wish I wasn't centered and that I had more of the wall. I edited it in Picnik using the advanced b/w. I had my setting written down, but can't find it! it was taken on Aperature.
