Hamid Dabashi the 63 year old Iranian-American Professor of Iranian Studies and Comparative Literature has published an article on Aljazeera titled ‘The mother of the world: The birth of Egypt's democracy’ referencing the Egyptian election as not a 'referendum' on the revolution, but a step in the only direction possible: forward. Dabashi states “Analysts are asking: Has the revolution failed? …there are other historical comparisons we can make. If you want to have a simple sense of what exactly has happened in the Arab and Muslim world that we celebrate as the "Arab Spring", just compare the Iranian Revolution of 1979 with the Egyptian Revolution of 2011 - in a span of just a little more than three decades. …The Egyptian revolution is everything that the Iranian revolution was not: calm, composed, gentle, civil, human, hopeful, principled. All the legitimate fear that all Egyptians now have for the future of their revolution is fuel for visionary progress. ...Those who fear that Egyptians are not revolutionary enough, or that they are caught in a "Stockholm Syndrome" ought to ask themselves: Do they want Egypt to be thirty years from now where Iran is today - ruled by a fraudulent tyranny, violently opposed by career opportunists in cahoots with the neocons, with the vast majority of Iranians sick and tired of one and disgusted by the other?” Inspired by Aljazeera ow.ly/c4VTh image source Facebook ow.ly/c4VSm

A lot of touch-up to be done yet.

Hard to tell when gravity’s been turned sideways and the ceiling starts acting like the floor. You’re staring up at a blank white sky that isn’t the sky at all, just a wall pretending it knows something. Two legs stretch out like exclamation points, toes tipped in midnight polish, pointing toward whatever comes next.

And hanging up there, watching the whole thing without blinking, is a calavera. Flowers crowning its head, smiling the way only a skull can. Not a smile of happiness exactly, more like understanding. It’s been where you’re going and it’s not in a hurry to tell you about it.

Feet say now.

The calavera says remember.

That skull’s been around. It knows that bodies get tired, that legs end up pointing at walls sometimes, that life is a long hallway and occasionally you lie down right in the middle of it. The flowers aren’t there to cheer things up they’re there to remind you that beauty doesn’t last, but it sure leaves a mark.

This is a picture about waiting. Waiting for sleep. Waiting for the music to come back on. Waiting for tomorrow to knock, even though you’re not sure you invited it. The flash of light freezes the moment, like a radio jingle you didn’t ask for but now can’t forget.

Let’s call it “Looking Up”.

Looking up at the wall.

Looking up at the past.

Looking up at the thing that’s smiling even when everything else goes quiet.

Widest pano I've ever made, a 360 degree view from Worli Gaon (Koliwada).

Gandharan statuary is my favorite type of religious art because it's such a perfect blend of east and west. When Alexander the Great conquered what is now Afghanistan and Pakistan, he left behind Greek colonists and their artistic traditions. When Buddhism filtered up through India on its way to China, magic happened. For more background see Wikipedia and the Silk Road Project.... Arthur M. Beautifully said.

At the gorgeous paradise of the Golden Pagoda, Namsai. I really want to live the ascetic life (but I'd only survive a month, tops :P)

Melinda Taylor the 36 year old Australian lawyer has been arrested along with three other members of a delegation from the International Criminal Court for allegedly trying to pass "dangerous" documents to Saif al-Islam, the son of deposed Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi. Michael Vincent for the Australian ABC News reports the Libyan government spokesman Mohamad Al-Hereizi states "We don't have anything against this woman. Just we need some information from her, after that she will be free." …the ICC demanded her immediate release, along with that of the other three members of the ICC team. Libyan officials say Ms Taylor and the three other ICC staffers have been put in what they describe as "preventive detention" for 45 days while they are investigated. [Australian] Foreign Minister Bob Carr, who has sent a senior diplomat to Libya to look into the case, says it is essential that Australian embassy staff be granted immediate access to her. Her boss at the ICC, Xavier-Jean Keita, has told the ABC that Ms Taylor is an ethical person and says her arrest is illegal. "They are ICC staff with privilege and immunity," he said. ICC spokesman Fadi el-Abdallah said he was trying to find out why members of the team will be held for up to 45 days.” Inspired by ABC ow.ly/by3P5 image source whatsonningbo ow.ly/by38X

Jillian Kestler-DAmours the Canadian freelance journalist and documentary filmmaker based in Jerusalem, who rejects the notion of objectivity and instead believes in using journalism to challenge power structures and promote change, has published an article on ipsnews titled ‘Media Faces New Crackdown’. Kestler-DAmours states “The Palestinian Authority’s arrest of journalists and activists critical of its policies are threatening freedom of expression and journalistic freedoms in the West Bank, according to local human rights groups. …PA security forces have arrested dozens of Palestinian journalists, bloggers, students and activists in recent weeks. Many have been detained for statements they made on social networking sites like Facebook that were critical of the PA, while others were targeted for articles and other work they published. …In late April, Palestinian Ma’an News Agency reported that the PA had instructed Internet service providers to block access to news websites that were critical of President Mahmoud Abbas. Since the report came out, PA communications minister Mashour Abu Daka has resigned from his post. Attorney General al-Maghni, for his part, has defended the decision to block the websites, arguing that they were censored for security reasons and because personal complaints had been made against their content.”
