fun fact: the popular term 'writing on the wall' widely used as a phrase in songs, literature and in language actually originates from the Bible where a supernatural omen appeared as writing on the wall foretelling the destruction of the Babylonian Empire.

The illustrations of this book presents a fascinating visual journey through the history of men’s underwear. Although the garments themselves change dramatically—from medieval coverings to fitted athletic wear—the illustrations reveal a striking continuity: men’s underwear has often been designed and represented as an extension of masculine strength, physical power, and social status.
The left section of the image appears to depict a medieval scene. Here, underwear was not conceived as a separate fashion category but as a practical layer beneath clothing. Medieval men commonly wore linen undergarments that protected expensive outer garments from sweat and dirt. Yet even in this early period, the male body was closely associated with ideas of vigor and capability. Clothing was structured to support movement, labor, and warfare, reflecting a society in which physical strength was a defining male virtue.
The central figure shows a much later stage in underwear development. The garment is more fitted and tailored to the body, emphasizing the torso and the natural lines of the male physique. By the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, advances in textile manufacturing made closer-fitting undergarments possible. Underwear no longer served only hygienic purposes; it also began shaping how the male body was perceived. The body underneath became something to display, support, and improve.
The right side of the image is perhaps the most revealing. The muscular figure, posed with a flexed arm, links underwear directly to physical strength. This reflects a major cultural shift that occurred in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The rise of physical culture movements, gymnasiums, competitive sports, and bodybuilding encouraged men to view their bodies as projects to be developed and showcased.
Advertisements increasingly featured athletes, soldiers, and strongmen wearing underwear. Manufacturers understood that selling underwear was no longer just about comfort—it was about selling ideals of masculinity.
What is particularly remarkable about this historical progression is that underwear itself is rarely visible in everyday life, yet it has consistently carried symbolic meaning. Throughout history, men’s undergarments have been associated with readiness, discipline, and physical competence. A knight’s linen underlayers supported armor; a Victorian gentleman’s union suit represented respectability; an athlete’s fitted briefs suggested power and control. In each case, the garment became connected to prevailing ideals of what a man should be.
The image also reminds us that masculinity is culturally constructed. The muscular figure on the right may seem natural to modern viewers because contemporary advertising continues to associate underwear with athletic bodies. Yet this connection was developed over centuries. The illustrations demonstrate how clothing manufacturers, artists, and broader social values gradually transformed underwear from a hidden necessity into a symbol of male strength and confidence.
Seen together, the three images tell a story that goes beyond fashion history. They reveal how a simple undergarment became intertwined with changing concepts of manhood. What amazes me, and perhaps the most compelling aspect of the images, is the persistence of this theme. Across different centuries and styles, men’s underwear is repeatedly portrayed not merely as clothing but as a foundation for strength, a hidden layer that supports both the body and the cultural ideal of masculinity itself.

Ik zag Gerard gisteren op de Zandmotor waar hij druk bezig was met stokjes en touwtjes een nieuw landart tekening uit te zetten.
Ik heb hem hier al vaker bezig gezien. Ik vind het mooi hoe iemand zijn vergankelijke sporen achterlaat op dit mooie stuk strand. Hij is niet de enige.
Als alle lijnen zijn getrokken gaat hij met een drone van bovenaf fotograferen en filmen.
Resultaten van zijn werk zijn op zijn eigen website te zien.
Ik ben de andere dag teruggekomen om het resultaat vast te leggen.
