Met dit, langer lopende project, wil ik aandacht geven aan en vragen voor de herdenking van het afschaffen van de slavernij door Nederland in 1873. Het liefst zou ik zien dat er een nationale feestdag voor zou komen, waarbij we met elkaar kunnen terugkijken én vooruitkijken, helen en vieren.
Ik werk in de maand juni 2021, voorafgaand aan Keti Koti 2021 (1 juli), in CBK Zuidoost, enkele dagdelen per week, aan een serie portretten van mensen die ik een jaar geleden tijdens Keti Koti heb aangesproken en mocht fotograferen. Die foto's ben ik nu aan het uitwerken, op papier, met pen en waterverf. Tegelijkertijd verzamel ik teksten van mensen, waarin ze beschrijven hoe ze Keti Koti ervaren / ervaren hebben, hier in Nederland of in Suriname.

Went down to WFP to see if I could locate my lost drone (went missing last month). I checked with the park's security team and they didn't recover it. So I put a claim in with DJI.
Then I walked around Market Square, Strong Alley and Krutch Park with my camera.

Rob: Do you think that our culture has removed Man's rightful place in the environment?
Juzno: Oh, I think people have been doing that for a long time now. Lately, we've become smarter in how we implement things: We pretend that Man is irrelevant. In doing so, we get rid of our guilt.
Rob: Do you see that in the current state of the visual art?
Juzno: Oh yea. Look around you. Man has been relegated to mere forms, objects and abstractions. Look at Fashion Photography. Have you lately seen how those fashion models look like? They look so fake. There is not a wrinkle or stray hair on their bodies. There is no one on Earth who really looks like that. A real human being is not supposed to like that. I don't think the models represent Man at all. When you look at Street Photography, man is either smaller than the entire world - or just part of the facade of the urban structure. Years ago, they removed man in nature. Do you ever wonder why most landscape photos do not include any human element on them? Because to them Man is the root cause of Nature's ruin. Man is the problem - so let's get rid of him.

First attempt at an iris shot. Noisy and not all that sharp. I'm finding out that reverse macro can only go so far in terms of certain factors. Definitely ways to go before I get one looking like one of these.
But hey, I'm still taking that pat on my back right about now. :-)

There are people who look at the world and see what's there. And then there are people who look at the world and wonder what else it could be. Man Ray belonged to the second kind.
Born Emmanuel Radnitzky in Philadelphia, he spent his life turning ordinary things into questions. A camera wasn't just a camera. A photograph wasn't necessarily a record of something that had happened. A woman's face could become a shadow. A body could become a landscape. A pair of lips could float through a dream with no explanation whatsoever.
He went to Paris and found the Surrealists, though maybe they found him first. There was Man Ray, walking through the streets with a camera under his arm, looking at the world as if it had been badly assembled and he might be able to improve it.
He photographed Kiki de Montparnasse, and there she was—not simply a woman in a photograph, but a kind of apparition. He photographed artists, lovers, objects, shadows, and accidents. He made pictures that seemed to say: Look again. You're sure that's what you're looking at?
And then there were his rayographs. No camera. Just objects placed directly onto photographic paper, light passing around them, leaving behind their ghosts.
Think about that.
A comb becomes a strange architectural structure. A hand becomes a shadow. A collection of everyday things becomes evidence from a world that doesn't quite exist. He called them rayographs, naturally enough, though the name sounds almost like something you'd find written on a door in a dream.
Man Ray liked accidents. He trusted the accidental. He understood that sometimes the best thing an artist can do is get out of the way and let something unexpected happen. That's a lesson worth remembering. Because we're living in a world that wants everything explained. Every photograph gets a caption. Every face gets a name. Every strange thing gets reduced to something familiar.
Man Ray wasn't having it. He left room for mystery. He left room for the woman who might be a shadow and the shadow that might be a woman. He left room for objects to become symbols without telling us exactly what they symbolized. And maybe that's why his work still feels alive. Because he wasn't really photographing the twentieth century. He was photographing the moment when reality loses its nerve and turns into a dream.
So today, if you're looking at something ordinary—a lamp, a chair, your own hand resting on the table—look at it twice. Maybe there's another picture hiding inside it. Maybe Man Ray would have found it. Maybe that's what the camera was for all along.
