VISUAL LIBRARIES - Leave your Mark.

A collaborative, visual project which encourages you to sign out a Visual Library Book and ‘Leave Your Mark’.

A Visual Library Book is whatever you want it to be, a sketchbook, a journal, a diary, a notepad.

You can ‘Leave Your Mark’ in whatever way you want, ranging from drawing, writing, sewing, adding photographs, markings, printing and sticking. How you make your marks is entirely up to you. All we ask is that you have fun with the different themes. Just borrow it on your library card with other books and materials. If you are not already a member, just ask the staff to help you.

45 Visual Library Books have been placed in Portsmouth Central Library and each has its own theme ranging from; Portsmouth, My City, When I Open My Eyes, Whilst I Was Waiting, Love, What’s in My Pocket and Memories. The intention is for you to feel free to explore the Visual Library Books and choose a theme that you like.

In Association with: Rhodia, Seawhite, Portsmouth City Council, University of Portsmouth, COPIC Pens

The Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts announces the return of the Philadelphia International Festival of the Arts (PIFA), taking place across the venues of the Kimmel Center’s campus, as well as select locations throughout the city, from April 8 through April 23, 2016. A 16-day celebration of art and community, PIFA showcases innovation and a breadth of local and international performances and installations, all curated by the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts. With more than 60 events across genres and art forms, PIFA is bookended by Article 13 – a grand-scale fire and sand installation that tells the story of immigrants around the world – which serves as the grand opening of the Festival and culminates with the celebrated PIFA Street Fair.

In this third installment of PIFA, the curatorial vision illustrates the concept “We Are What We Make.” The Festival will explore how our humanity is shaped, changed, inspired, and challenged by the world we create, all displayed through a variety of performing and visual arts. A massive installation by Mimi Lien – recipient of a 2015 MacArthur Genius Award – will consume the lobby of the Kimmel Center, bringing this vision to life and will be on display throughout the Festival.

PIFA’s highly anticipated finale transforms six blocks of Broad Street (between Chestnut and South Streets) into Philadelphia’s ultimate FREE block party. Featuring dozens of performances, rides, a zip line, popular food vendors, and this year’s centerpiece – an enormous waterfall in the center of Broad Street.

Boris Mikhailov

Ukraine (1938)

Yesterday’s Sandwich

Boris Mikhailov is one of the well-known artists from the Kharkiv School of Photography, a photography movement that, despite lacking official status, had a notable impact on Ukrainian art. These artists met in clubs and cafés to invent their own visual language free from the dominant Soviet dogma. At the beginning of his career in the late 1960s and early 1970s, Boris Mikhailov immersed himself in the social realities of his country and produced a series of photographs that were censored by the communist regime. One day, he accidentally superimposed two slides from this series in a ‘sandwich’.
