Flower: Pale-pink, Bright-pink in Summer; White, Pale-pink, Bright-pink in Autumn

 

Habit: Compact, Open branches, Rounded

 

Awards: RHS AGM (Award of Garden Merit)

 

A medium-sized evergreen shrub that grows up to 4ft (1.25m) tall when mature and rather wider. In mid-summer it produces an abundance of flower spikes up to 3in (8cm) long. Each flower is about 1/4in (6mm) wide with fertile stamens, and of clear pink, an unusual colour in the smaller hebes. Hardy to 20°F (-7°C), US zones 9–10. A garden hybrid introduced in the 20th century.

 

Hebe ‘Great Orme’ is a somewhat open, evergreen, bushy shrub, which can grow to nearly 5 ft (140 cm). The parallel-sided, spear-shaped, shiny, green leaves are up to 3.5 in (9 cm) long. The flowers spikes are bright pink, fade to white to give a two-toned effect. summer to autumn.

 

This half-hardy plant grows into a large and dominant plant. It requires a neutral, alkaline, moist and well drained soil, preferring full sun, semi-shade, sun, and a position in a border or free standing. This plant is likely to need clipping.

 

One of the larger hebes, ideal for a sheltered shrub border. It is susceptible to and should be protected from leaf spot and mildew.

This statue has dominated the western end of the High Street for a number of years. After a vandal attack in 2003, it was repaired and restored to its original location two years later.

Lydia Karpinska B.A., A.R.B.S.

 

Lydia Karpinska, sculptor and portraitist, lives and works in Maidenhead Berkshire. She studied at Central St Martins College of Art, with Leonard Boden R.P., and at Wycombe College.

 

Her earlier career was involved with drawing and painting portrait commissions of children.

 

Lydia has made several sculptures for public sites and private clients, and has participated in exhibitions in the U.K. and Europe.

 

She is a member of the Royal British Sculptors, The Surrey Sculpture Society and The Polish Artists of Great Britain.

This image is from my collection "The Infinite Green of Paper Lawns." My images are all created using miniature 1:100 scale diorama models, which I build myself. I became interested in miniature photography because of how it can play with one's sense of reality and scale, and I wanted to try and push the limits of this idea, in the hopes that I might create something truly unique.
