this is lonely. she has now joined her friends in this "lonely doll" series.

i think the series is now complete.

lonely is not lonely anymore as she now has all her friends...and of course she is never lonely when you dear flickr friends come to visit her.

EXPLANATION OF PIECE:

this past summer i was traveling down a back road in utah and saw a old baby doll sitting on the front porch of an antique store. i was drawn to her.

since i have so many old baby dolls sitting in my art studio, and little room for another, i decided to take a photograph of her so i could remember her.

she looked so lonely to me (hence the title). perhaps lonely for her "long ago" little girl owner?

when i came home i knew i wanted to make an art piece to remember her. i happen to have an old piece of painted wood that i found in the trash and knew it would be perfect.

i "worked on" the colors of the photograph to suit the painted wood.

and here she is.....lonely

Representation of Joseph Smith, founder of the Mormon Church, as a sphinx located in Gilgal Garden.

Gilgal Sculpture Garden is a small public city park, located at 749 East 500 South in Salt Lake City, Utah, United States. The park, which is filled with unusual symbolic statuary associated with Mormonism, notably to the Sphinx with Joseph Smith's head, was a labor of love designed and created by LDS businessman Thomas Battersby Child, Jr. (1888-1963) in his spare time. The park contains 12 original sculptures and over 70 stones engraved with scriptures, poems and literary texts. Gilgal Sculpture Garden is the only designated "visionary art environment" in the state of Utah.

The name "Gilgal" is sometimes translated to mean "circle of standing stones," an appropriate appellation for a sculpture garden. Gilgal is also the name of a city and a valley in The Book of Mormon, a sacred scripture in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. -- Courtesy Wikipedia

The Sphinx is the best-known sculpture in Gilgal Garden. It is also, Child wrote “the basis of thought or inspiration for all that is built around it.” The contrast of the unhewn stones arranged to suggest a crouching animal with the finely carved face of LDS Church founder Joseph Smith makes this a remarkable piece. Child carefully selected the huge quartzite stones to form the Sphinx’s body and hired sculptor Maurice Brooks to create the face using an oxyacetylene torch.

The Sphinx represents Child’s belief that the answers to life’s great questions cannot be discovered with the intellect, but only through faith. The sphinx is an ancient symbol of riddles and mystery. Joseph Smith’s face symbolizes Child’s conviction that the LDS Priesthood reveals to mankind the answers to life’s mysteries.

The current exhibition at our local art gallery in Leamington is ‘Modern Pre-Raphaelite Visionaries: British Art 1880-1930’, which was well worth the visit. The pre-Raphaelites I was reasonably familiar with – Millais, Rossetti and the later followers William Morris and Edward Burne-Jones, but while the original pre-Raphaelites formed their brotherhood in 1848, the ones featured in this exhibition were much later. Much less well known, they include Frederick Cayley Robinson, Evelyn Pickering De Morgan and Charles Ricketts, and they dedicated themselves to promoting the rich, nostalgic and romantic art of the pre-Raphaelites. A number of the paintings were based on legends, so there was a fair sprinkling of fairies, wizards and the like. I wondered if they should perhaps be considered post-pre-Raphaelites.

This is The Annunciation, painted in 1892 by Arthur Hacker and is huge. The Virgin certainly looks very pure but quite troubled - and it’s easy to miss the angel hovering behind her.
