My friend Michael Naimark is exploring new ideas for virtual reality experiences, in collaboration with Google and other researchers. To discuss this work, we got together with two other colleagues, Steve Gano and Jim McKee -- with whom we worked at the Apple Multimedia Lab in the eighties, pushing the envelope on related questions.

We started with a tour of the historic Sentinel Building in North Beach, home of American Zoetrope -- where Francis Coppola worked on many cinematic masterpieces like The Godfather and Apocalypse Now. We checked out the underground screening room and sound mixing room where some of that work took place, then headed upstairs to Michael and Jim’s studios, for a wonderful conversation about the new VR frontier.

Michael and his colleagues are researching how people are represented in virtual reality. Their first experiment at Google’s “Big Chairs” Park led to some helpful guidelines on how to film people for VR, by using different camera angles and distances.

They’re also investigating ‘hyper-images’ that resemble a group of people, but that are shot at different times and composited together to create both ‘credible’ and ‘incredible’ pictures. To enable more experiments like these, Michael is developing ‘IMU VR’, a new type of camera that could make it easier for communities to tell their stories in VR. More on this later.

It was great to reconnect with my colleagues and brainstorm these ideas together. It felt like the good old days, and the creative juices were flowing all over again ...

As the shadows of the virtual world lengthened, the door to the office creaked open, casting a sliver of light across the room. In walked a vision of beauty that momentarily stole G’s breath. She was a stunning blonde, her hair elegantly pinned up, revealing the graceful curve of her neck. Her eyes, a striking shade of blue, held a mixture of determination and worry.

G felt an unexpected flutter in her chest as the woman approached her desk, the scent of her perfume subtly intertwining with the ever-present aroma of oil and steam.

"Miss Aeon, I presume?" the woman inquired, her voice as captivating as her appearance.

G nodded, suddenly conscious of her appearance, and gestured for the woman to step inside.

"How may I be of service?" she asked, her voice steady but her heart racing with an attraction she hadn't anticipated.

"Miss Aeon," she stated calmly, despite the storm of worry brewing within her, "my beloved has gone missing..."

G attempted to mask the subtle twinge of disappointment that flickered within her upon realizing that this captivating woman was already spoken for.

"Let us start at the beginning," G prompted, her voice a blend of concern and professionalism.

The beautiful woman held out her hand to the detective. "Lady Beatrice," she began, her voice carrying a dignified air that matched her esteemed title, "of the Clockwork Sibyls. My beloved Lady Abigail has disappeared..."

You put these goggles on and go into these enormous situations and find things that are hidden....there are clues!! You really feel like the scene is real!!!!! Us grand folks even enjoyed it!!!! Aughhhh!! I got to fight a dragon!! 😮 Those are my 2 grandsons in front row...they're 13. It's suppose to be 66 this coming Wednesday!!! Yay!! Her parents are in this image.

Started with my manface then a virtual facelift followed by virtual makeup, added a dress and bow.

Sneak peek of some work I've been doing in LDD :)

My effort for the Virtual Paintout this month. After yesterday's large drawing I particularly drew this inside a pencilled vignette. Pen and watercolour, then watercolour pencils, then Prismacolours.

Those rare days "off" are best spent baking under the sun with a good book and something cold to drink.....

Thank you for choosing my photo for the group's cover. It is an honor and pleasure to have it selected.

Another zoom in shot at Pinggan Village, slightly earlier than the previous one. I managed to get a 15secs exposure in this one while some of the houses still have their light on.

Other than shooting landscape, I like gaming as well. Somehow I feel this really looks like those CG scene in game.
