inFORM is a shape display that gives physical form to digital information. Motorized pins extend from a tabletop to form a physical sculpture that users can view, touch and deform. inFORM can also interact with the world around it, by accurately moving and manipulating objects placed on its surface. Remote participants in a videoconference can be rendered physically, allowing for a strong sense of presence and the ability to manipulate distant objects.

The Wilson Center’s Maternal Health Initiative, in partnership with UNFPA and the Maternal Health Task Force, is heading to Abuja, Nigeria, to co-host a two-day workshop from December 16-17 with the Centre for Population and Reproductive Health. On December 17, Nigerian policymakers, community health workers, program managers, and donors will join us in a discussion about what’s needed to improve maternal health systems in a live videoconference.

Over the last decade, Nigeria has seen only modest improvements in maternal health. Despite innovative efforts such as the Midwives Service Scheme, SURE-P, and Saving One Million Lives, maternal mortality rates stand at 565 per 100,000 live births and modern contraceptive prevalence is just 10 percent. Advocacy for national political commitment has been ongoing and there have been efforts to improve provision for entitlements, expand infrastructure, and increase access to drugs, but the scale of the country makes progress difficult.

With renewed commitment and concerted action, it’s possible for Nigeria to reach the goal of universal maternal health coverage, say Nigerian maternal health experts, but doing so will require focus on key areas of an unfinished agenda, including a strategic roadmap to acquire universal access, and examination of critical policy issues and recommendations.

Free C O F F E E ! (And 15 Minutes of Fame)

On Tuesday, February 23rd 2012, we had a semi-regular 'Town Hall' Meeting of Munich RE's U.S. divisions. This time, our Management operated the meeting from the American Modern facilities in Amelia Ohio; those of us in the various other divisions and remote offices watched the proceedings via remote videoconference. I attended along with much of the Hartford crew in our stately State Street Cafeteria. Someone was taking pictures during the meeting, but I was caught up in what was going on in the meeting (it really was interesting, and good news for the most part) and was unaware I had been captured for posterity.

The summary eMail came out at 9:27 the next morning. At 9:41, someone stopped by my cube and mentioned my picture (far left). Fourteen minutes, exactly -- and it hasn't been mentioned since. They say the camera adds ten pounds, but oddly enough, I only saw one camera.

A transcript of the eMail follows for your prurient interest.

Students and teachers from across the country experience an interactive live surgery program through COSI, Columbus, Ohio's Center of Science and Industry.

Seen here are surgical tools. The tools are passed around for closer examination by audience members.

Today's surgeon was Dr. Chambers.

The 90-minute program, Surgical Suite: Total Knee Replacement, takes place at Mount Carmel Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. Schools connect remotely by videoconference, or participate from COSI's own Galaxy Theater.

The program is one of COSI's most popular science offerings for students and teachers.

This program was photographed on Wednesday, December 8, 2010.

For more information about COSI's videoconference science education programs, please visit www.cosi.org/educators/videoconferencing/

COSI's Surgical Suite: Total Knee Replacement is presented by Mount Carmel, East, West, and St. Ann's, and by NYLF.
