Scenes from COSI's "In Depth: Kidney Transplant" interactive videoconference for grades 9 through adult.
Follow the story of Tyler's kidney transplant while viewing taped footage from both the donor and recipient surgeries which are narrated live by a member of the Ohio State University's Comprehensive Transplant Team.
Leading the program through a live narration of the taped surgery was Dr. Alejandro Diaz, Nephrologist from the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. COSI Team Members Katie Trausch, Jesse Teng, and Caitlin Yahr facilitated the program.
In Depth: Kidney Transplant is a multi-point program that connects up to 5 schools at one time, including an audience at COSI for groups and individuals. Questions will be asked in a round robin, facilitated format. COSI can accept ISDN or IP connections.

To make routinely or ordinary life, an adventure with future, makes indispensable which we jump across the walls and the borders lines, to meet again to us between the legend, the rates, the tremors and the dreams that wake up in the human soul, music, the poetry, the privilege of being able to maintain to us romped, between the electronic mail, audio and the videoconferences... each one by its side, each one breathing his or her own air, rhythm, styles, trying to find or to propose new senses to the life.
Not very often we watched backwards, to know that the distances, riding, sailing, crossing passages, infected forests possessed by criminals, forbidden territories, earth stinted out with diseases impossible to anticipate or to cure... were have not many centuries ago, the only possibility of maintaining to two people in contact, with their interests, the news, life styles... all it paying to an expensive price and taking high risks, with times of delay of weeks or months, to the delay of the letter, the emissary, the shout of the watchtower, from the light or the bell tower... we can play well our letters, we do the impossible thing, to harvest transparent experiences, multiple stimuli and the shared passions, to unite souls, languages, peoples and cultures, that yesterday, not even we imagined that they shared with us the Earth.
Let us do of the leisure, not merchandise, but an expression of our individuality, a testimony to crosscurrent of the freedom, as much in the North as in the South: watch and feel, each other, in the mirror, we will find the invisible thread of the humankind, that unites to us, to this time and all the previous ones, and those of happening in next futures.

Hacer de la cotidianidad una aventura con futuro, hace indispensable que saltemos sobre los muros y las fronteras, para reencontrarnos entre las leyendas, los ritmos, los estremecimientos y los sueños que despiertan en el alma humana, la música, la poesía, el privilegio de poder mantenernos enredados, entre el correo electrónico, la tele y la videoconferencia…cada uno por su lado, a su aire, procurando encontrar o proponer nuevos sentidos a la vida.
Pocas veces miramos hacia atrás, para saber que las distancias, cabalgando, navegando, atravesando pasadizos, bosques infectados de criminales, territorios vedados, tierras apestadas con enfermedades imposibles de prever o de curar…fueron no hace muchos siglos la única posibilidad de mantener a dos personas en contacto, con sus intereses, noticias, estilos de vida…todo ello pagando un precio y riesgos altos, con unos tiempos de espera de semanas o meses, a la espera de la carta, el emisario, el grito del atalaya, desde el faro o el campanario… juguemos bien nuestras cartas, hagamos lo imposible, por cosechar experiencias transparentes, estímulos múltiples para las alianzas y las pasiones compartidas, para unir almas, lenguas, pueblos y culturas, que ayer, ni siquiera imaginábamos que compartían con nosotros la tierra.
Hagamos del ocio, no una mercancía, sino una expresión fértil e irrepetible de nuestra individualidad. Un testimonio a contracorriente de la libertad, tanto en el Norte como en el Sur: mirémonos en el espejo, encontraremos el hilo invisible de la humanidad, que nos une, a este tiempo y a todos los anteriores, y los del devenir.

Pour faire par habitude ou la vie ordinaire, une aventure avec le futur, fait le nécessaire que nous sautons à travers les murs et les lignes de frontières, au rassemblement encore à nous entre la légende, les taux, les tremblements et les rêves qui se réveillent dans l'âme humaine, musique, la poésie, le privilège de pouvoir maintenir à nous avons fait le diable, entre le courrier électronique, l'acoustique et les vidéoconférences... chacun par son côté, chacun qui respire son propre air, rythme, modèles, essayant de trouver ou proposer de nouveaux sens à la vie.
Pas très souvent nous avons observé vers l'arrière, pour savoir que les distances, équitation, naviguant, les passages croisant, forêts infectées possédées par des criminels, territoires interdits, la terre ont lésiné dehors avec les maladies impossibles pour prévoir ou pour traiter... étaient le démuni il y a beaucoup de siècles, la seule possibilité de maintien à deux personnes en contact, avec leurs intérêts, les nouvelles, styles de vie... tous il payant à un prix cher et prenant de gros risques, avec des périodes de retardons des semaines ou les mois, au retarder de la lettre, l'émissaire, le cri du tour de guet, de la lumière ou de la tour de cloche... nous pouvons jouer bien nos lettres, nous faisons la chose impossible, pour moissonner des expériences transparentes, stimulus multiples et les passions partagées, pour unir des âmes, des langues, des peuples et des cultures, qui hier, non égaux nous ont imaginé qu'ils ont partagé avec nous la terre.
Faisons des loisirs, pas marchandises, mais une expression de notre individualité, un témoignage au renvoi de courant de la liberté, autant dans le nord que dans les Sud : observez et sentez, dans le miroir, nous trouvera le fil invisible de l'humanité, qui unit à nous, à ce temps et tout le précédent, et à ceux de se produire dans le futur prochain.

Abbiamo guardato non molto spesso indietro, per sapere che le distanze, riding, navigando, passaggi di traversata, foreste infettate possedute dai criminali, i territori proibiti a, terra stinted fuori con le malattie impossibli anticipare o curare... erano non hanno molti secoli fa, l'unica possibilità di effettuare a due genti in contatto, con i loro interessi, le notizie, gli stili di vita... tutti esso che paga ad un prezzo costoso e che prende gli elevati rischi, con i periodi di fa ritardare delle settimane o mesi, al fa ritardare della lettera, il emissary, il grido del watchtower, dalla luce o la torretta di flangia... noi può giocare bene le nostre lettere, facciamo la cosa impossibile, per raccogliere le esperienze trasparenti, stimoli multipli e le passioni comuni, unire le anime, le lingue, la gente e le colture, quell'ieri, non neppure abbiamo immaginato che hanno ripartito con noi la terra.

Vor nicht sehr häufig paßten wir rückwärts auf, um zu wissen daß die Abstände, Reiten, segelnd, kreuzendurchgänge, die angesteckten Wälder, die von den Verbrechern, verbotene Gegenden besessen wurden, Masse heraus mit stinted den Krankheiten, die unmöglich sind vorwegzunehmen, oder zu kurieren... haben nicht vielen Jahrhunderten, die einzige Möglichkeit des Beibehaltens zu zwei Leuten im Kontakt, mit ihren Interessen, die Nachrichten waren, Lebensstile... alle es zahlend zu einem kostspieligen Preis und hohe Gefahren, mit Zeiten von nehmend verzögern von den Wochen oder Monate, zu verzögern vom Buchstaben, das Abgesandt, der Shout des Watchtower, vom Licht, oder der Glockenturm... wir unsere Briefe gut spielen kann, wir tun die unmögliche Sache, um transparente Erfahrungen, mehrfache Anregungen zu ernten und die geteilten Neigungen, Seelen, Sprachen, Völker und Kulturen, dieses Gestern zu vereinigen, nicht gleichmäßig stellten uns wir vor, daß sie mit uns die Masse teilten.

Students and teachers from across the country experience an interactive live surgery program through COSI, Columbus, Ohio's Center of Science and Industry.
Here, COSI Team Member Jessie announces the participating schools and reviews guidelines on asking questions.
Today's surgeon was Dr. Chambers.
The 90-minute program, Surgical Suite: Total Knee Replacement, takes place at Mount Carmel Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. Schools connect remotely by videoconference, or participate from COSI's own Galaxy Theater.
The program is one of COSI's most popular science offerings for students and teachers.

Dell floated us a couple of Dell Mini 9s. We put Ubunto 8.10 on this one and I used it to Skype Dan in for D&D on 3/7. Worked like a charm and takes up way less space than my MBP.

Students and COSI Team follow a videotape of an actual autopsy accompanied by live narration by forensic pathologist Dr. Larry Tate in COSI's award-winning "In-Depth: Autopsy" videoconference program for Grades 10 and above.
Students must work through the "case" and solve for cause of death.
The autopsy is shown from the Y-incision to the removal of the brain and is 90-minutes long. Teens, adults, and community groups are welcome. Individual tickets are available for non-school audiences and individuals to watch from COSI's Galaxy Theater.
Teachers will be sent a kit of materials prior to the program. In the kit, teachers will find materials to conduct both pre- and post-visit activities along with booklets for students to use during the program.

Here, we're visiting one of the jail cells inside CONSENT!, which is a first person, simulation game based on Harriet A. Washington's book "Medical Apartheid" (www.medicalapartheid.com) in which your avatar assumes the role of an African-American prisoner who has to make tough decisions about whether to choose to 'consent' and submit to medical experiments, which took place during the time period of the 1940s to the present. The entire game was designed by Global Kids students.

Seventh grade students at Gillette Road Middle School in Cicero, NY participated in a three-part program that begins with a videoconference of American Signs and Symbols. After delving into the symbols in Bartholdi's maquette and Zeldis' painting, art teacher Elizabeth Abbott challenged her students to create a work that involves appropriation and personal symbols. Each student also wrote their own artist's statement to accompany the artwork. In a reverse presentation, the student artists shared their work with docents at American Art.

Our ISB fifth grade Flat Classroom Sounding Board students requested a Skype conversation with High School Flat Classroom participants. Thankfully Anne Mirtschin's class in Australia agreed to share their experiences with us!

The LibraryLinkNJ spring membership meeting was held via videoconference at three different locations on May 22: Rutgers University’s Alexander Library, Rowan University’s Chamberlain Student Center and William Paterson’s Cheng Library. After a welcome and remarks from Jane L. Crocker, president of LLNJ’s executive board and director of the Gloucester County College Library College, and Mary Chute, NJ State Librarian, Lynn Pascale, chair of the nominating committee, presented the proposed slate of officers for the next year; James Keehbler, chair of the strategic planning committee, reviewed the 2015-2016 strategic plan; and Ruth Bogan, treasurer went over the proposed Fiscal Year 2015 budget.
Following the business meeting, Geoff DiMasi, co-founder of Indy Hall in Philadelphia, discussed Libraries Today & Tomorrow: Incubators for Community, Business and Culture. Indy Hall is one of the earliest co-working spaces, known for incubating community with the goal of making Philadelphia a better place to live, work and learn. Due to its success in creating a truly engaged and participatory membership interested in being good citizens in their neighborhood, Indy Hall has become the model emulated worldwide. DiMasi shared what he learned by cultivating a co-working community and how public, school, academic and special libraries can apply this model.
