Since 2008, the Smithsonian American Art Museum has partnered with Cisco to create a new model for teacher training. Designed to aid educators and school systems with the current challenges they are facing preparing students for the future, the Cisco—Smithsonian American Art Museum Teacher Institute initially reached out to interdisciplinary teams of teachers in grades 5–12 from school districts in Louisiana and Mississippi impacted by Hurricane Katrina. The Institute’s goal was to provide teachers with skills and techniques to utilize works of art as primary sources in their classrooms with the use of technology tools such as blogs, podcasts, and Web 2.0 applications. A collaborative website was designed and implemented to build a community of practice and provide participants with a means to share ideas, resources, and experiences both before the Institute began and well after it ended. Each participant developed his or her own homepage on the site and used it to blog daily about his or her experiences. They posted photos, added music, and shared lesson ideas. The partnership continues as participants share their knowledge in local and national workshops, on the collaborative website, and through real-time videoconferences with the Museum for their students. In all, more than 3,500 teachers have benefited from this professional development model and the techniques and strategies developed in this partnership have the potential to benefit even more communities across the country.

On Monday, December 6, 2010, Dr. Berry Lyons, Director of the School of Earth Sciences at The Ohio State University, discussed climate change over the past half million years and the processes that cause it.

 

Dr. Lyons used examples from ice core data from polar regions to detail how the climate has changed over this period. In addition he used observations made on polar and alpine glaciers in the past few years to provide information about the impact of today's climate on glacier dynamics.

 

Dr. Lyons is a Professor in the School of Earth Sciences at OSU, and his main areas of research are Hydrogeology, Earth System Science, Geochemistry.

 

This program was part of the "Experts" series of videoconference programs offered regularly by COSI, Columbus, Ohio's Center of Science and Industry.

Over 100 Jordanian students on Wednesday received first-hand accounts of the devastation wrought by recent flooding in Pakistan. But in addition to the humanitarian impact of the natural disaster, young Jordanians learned something else: perseverance. In a digital videoconference held by the Tony Blair Faith Foundation at De La Salle school yesterday, Jordanian students met with Pakistani peers, who talked about efforts to reach out to those hardest hit by the floods in July and August. Tenth grader Amal Aaraj said through the conference, she met people her age who suffered great hardships and "made it through OK". "I'm from an UNRWA school, so I understand hardships. Now that I saw what they managed to make of themselves, I want to work hard and reflect on myself," she said.

 

"When you read about something, you don't feel it as much as when you see it. Seeing it for real is a very different experience," Rasha Nuseibeh said, expressing her admiration for the Pakistani students' commitment to "not give up".

 

"This time it was different. We weren't asking each other about our lifestyles, we found out how these students beat hardships," Moussa said.

 

"We as young people do not check the news and see what's happening in the world. These conversations made me want to know more about what's happening with people in other cultures," Natour said.

 

In light of the digital conference, the Jordanian students will hold fundraising events in their schools to send donations to the UN which will be used to help Pakistani flood victims.

 

The videoconference was part of the foundation's "SolidariTEA" campaign, which gathers people of diverse faiths and backgrounds from around the world "around a cup of tea" to help tackle extreme poverty, according to the Tony Blair Faith Foundation.

 

The digital conference also came as part of the Face to Faith schools project, which uses technology to break down barriers between students from 15 countries of all faiths via video-conferencing and an online community.

 

The event commemorated International Human Rights Day, observed on December 10, and Human Solidarity Day, observed on December 20.
