I made this little movie as a gift for my mom, I hope you like it!

peacock showing off her beautiful feathers at Sudeley Castle surrounded by group of children

The time shown on this video is approx. an hour fast, but this mealworm feeder was filled up at lunchtime on this day - Needless to say I couldn't afford to fill this one everyday!

Experimented with a Raspberry Pi Zero W and camera module to create this time lapse video!

...literally, and very likely my last.

Good morning everyone. While not a fan of videos here on flickr I decided to post just this one of a male Pileated Woodpecker (Dryocopus pileatus) feeding at the suet filled knot hole. Pileated Woodpeckers are typically very elusive and shy and I thought a video of one would be a treat for those that rarely get to see one of these magnificent birds, of which we have been blessed with a number of them visiting this year.

As for the video, it's a little over one minute long, but for some reason it plays twice. I'd re-upload it, but didn't realized it played twice until after a number of people had already commented on it. What a disaster...I'm so sorry about that :-(

If you can bear with it, towards the very end of the video two other birds make an appearance. First a female Cardinal, which the woodpecker shoos away and at the very end a Downy Woodpecker. Kind of neat the Downy would visit while taking the video since it gives a nice comparison between it, being the smallest woodpecker in North America, and the Pileated, which is the largest at 15.7 - 19.3 inches (40 - 49 cm) in length.

Also, please notice how often the Pileated Woodpecker cleans/wipes it's bill on the tree. Something most woodpeckers do, but the Pileated seems to do it way more often than other woodpeckers. Almost to the extreme.

I hope you enjoy this video, and have no fear in that it will not be the first of many from yours truly. One of the reasons is it seems to take forever for a video to upload.

Thank you for stopping by...and I hope you're having a truly nice first week of July.

Lacey

PS...with this being my first ever video posted I couldn't help but notice how much the quality of the video deteriorated from uploading it to flickr, of which there was not much I could do about it. Sorry.

PSS...and in case anyone is curious, this video was taken with my Pentax K-3 camera, which surprised me how nice it switched from still pics that I was taking to the video feature without any hiccups. And so you'll know...this is the first video I've ever taken with the camera plus the 150-450mm zoom.

Setting for the camera at the time were...

ISO3200, aperture f/5.6, exposure .003 seconds (1/320) focal length 200

A little video of clips I cobbled together. I had a few days away, was quite tired from my trip, but had a restful time. Hope you are all okay. Please give the video a little watch (because when I redo it, it will feature music and won't be monetised)

Waste and cruelty are endemic at the commercial seal hunt

Canada’s commercial seal hunt 2015: the slaughter begins

Warning this video contains graphic material. IFAW has spent decades documenting what really happens at Canada’s commercial seal hunt. The same cruelty and waste happens year after year. Watch the video, see for yourself.

This time of year is tough for all of us who work to end the commercial seal hunt in Canada. With the arrival of warmer temperatures comes the devastating knowledge that the slaughter of baby harp seals will begin on the East Coast.

The Canadian government has set the 2015 quota at 400,000 harp seals, 60,000 grey seals and 8,200 hooded seals.

This year, government officials have refused to share any information regarding the hunt, citing privacy concerns. But so far, it appears as though only a single boat took part in the Gulf hunt - which opened mid-March - reportedly hunting for seal meat for the local butcher on the Magdalen Islands. We will be watching to see if hunters from the Magdalen Islands dump the seal pelts in the ocean as they have done in previous years, or if they will achieve their goal of sending 20,000 seal skins to a tannery in Normandin, Quebec, that received half a million dollars in government funding last year for this purpose.

The Nova Scotian grey seal hunt appears to be dormant yet again this year, due to an ongoing lack of markets for grey seal products despite hundreds of thousands of dollars from the government for market development research.

The opening date for the seal hunt off the coast of Newfoundland and Labrador, where the bulk of the hunting occurs, is set for Sunday, April 12. The Newfoundland sealing industry will receive another $2 million CAD bailout loan for the 2015 season making it the fourth year in a row that financial assistance has been required.

Throughout Canada, we’ve seen a decline in the landed value of the seals killed, the number of seals killed and the number of sealers taking part in the hunt.

There is no good reason to commercially hunt seals. We certainly don’t need the expensive luxury items produced by the hunt, which now include seal fur purses, sneakers, and iPad covers. It’s a tragic waste of an animal’s life, with government statistics suggesting that over 90% of the seals are killed only for their fur, the meat left on the ice to rot or thrown back into the ocean. And it’s a waste of taxpayer dollars. After 20 years of subsidies and government support, the landed value of the hunt is near its lowest ever.

Sadly, our fight is not over.

The Canadian government continues to support the commercial seal hunt as a matter of principle – not because it is necessary or creates jobs – and is keeping this cruel and unnecessary industry alive.

This April, while the slaughter takes place, we hope you will join us to spread awareness, share the facts and ask the Canadian government to stop financially supporting this dying industry, stop allowing the waste and instead support sealers to transition out of the industry.

This is a video that I had forgotten I did that special weekend in 2018. I am wearing this very outfit and, for a change, talk a bit. Now don't get your spirits up because, as has been the case in recent videos, I talk nonsense. Here is the link for those not interested in my thoughts about why I do less videos these days:

youtu.be/uQAcH7NICc0

I have been asked why I don't do videos anymore. I don't have a clear answer but maybe it has a lot to do with the time involved and that I have ran out of useful things to share. Another thing that comes to mind is that I have become lazy when it comes to dressing, resulting in less opportunities and less time to do vídeo.

It was never an easy thing to do because I had to focus on three things that don't come natural to me, at the same time. First I had to focus on moving in a feminine way, then I had to focus on sounding feminine and finally, and perhaps the hardest, improvise a meaningful message since I never prepared a script. You might have noticed that in recent years, the message is always the same and quite meaningless; generally just a simple greeting. It was different when I had an experience to share like the times I went to the therapist or out with my sister in law, but that was only for a short period of time.

I'd like to think that my videos might have been useful, inspiring and educational in the early years since not too many of us where sharing our experience in motion. Today, the Internet is filled with all sorts of videos sharing tricks of the trade, makeup tutorials and even transition stories that are far more useful and have better quality. Wait, maybe that is the main reason I stopped doing mine! No, seriously, I appreciate all the support and encouragement I have received on my videos over the years. As a matter of fact, every time I meet people for the first time, it is my videos they remember, along with the experiences I shared in them. That alone makes me realize that it was all worth the effort.

You have no idea all the work involved in getting the videos up in those days. The first years I taped them with a digital tape camera and then had to download the movie from tape to the computer in a workable format. After that some clipping, editing and sometimes even some text and then upload them to Youtube. Internet speeds and format quality were not even close to what we have today so you can imagine. Add to that the fact that almost every video was done twice, one in English and the other in Spanish! I have no idea how I found the time to share close to 150 videos in that cumbersome way! What matters is that I enjoyed doing and sharing them and they served a purpose at the time. It am proud for having done my part when I had the chance and, again, for all the amazing people I got to meet because of that.

I am not saying that I will not do videos any more but when I do them they will, most likely, be less meaningful and more along the lines of my most recent mute walks back and forth. I just realized that that is how I started out; with mute videos showing me walk. Well thank you if you read all the way till the end and I am sharing the link here too to save you the effort of scrolling up :)

youtu.be/uQAcH7NICc0

‘In a computer fairyland

it is a dream you bring to life.

Stop - living on video

stop - integrated circuits. . . .

stop - is this reality?’

So many of us now lead digitally focussed lives and there’s certainly an appeal. I derive great happiness from seeing so many wonderful pictures on Flickr. It’s a true pleasure to interact with so many very talented people. The thing that I enjoy the most is the thoughtfulness of all the people who I’ve come across, and the tremendous kindness.

I don’t think everyone enjoys quite the same pleasant experience online, and there are certainly dangers, ‘Stop, is this reality?’ I remember the first time I heard someone quoting a Facebook post about the news as ‘fact’, it seemed strange at the time, but it’s normal now.

What a prophetic song, and written back in 1981!

So where’s the connection with the picture? Enthusiasts gather their pictures and videos that will soon be ‘sur un faisceau de lumiere/on a beam of light’ for the enjoyment of others, and hopefully my own picture now joins with this!

As an aside, what a lovely group of people too, everyone cooperating so that all could get their pictures. I rather liked how this group lined up like slip fielders in a cricket match!

Pepper harvest! They say you shouldn't play with your food, but after six months with almost no fresh food, and living in weightlessness it is so hard not to be excited. We ate the peppers after watching them grow for months last Friday, and they were tasty… and a little bit hot 🌶🔥! A huge shout out and thank you to the researchers and engineers at NASA that made this possible, growing food in space is not easy, and was not even possible until a few years ago.

Yesterday the little black lamb and his playmates so impressed the powers that be that they all got into Explore (yes, camera shake and all) but it was our jet black hero who was the shining star,

In this video, he bravely joins a play-fight between two other lambs, then with a few head butts and very high jumps in the air he leads them all off down to the stream and the fallen tree trunk to pester the life out of the mother sheep in charge of the nursery (see yesterday's video).
