A Victorian red brick reminder of the past.
The University was established in 1881 as University College Liverpool, in 1882. In 1884, it became part of the federal Victoria University.
Following a Royal Charter and Act of Parliament in 1903, it became an independent university with the right to confer its own degrees called the University of Liverpool.
Manchester, England. The architect of the town hall was Alfred Waterhouse and the architect of the central library was Vincent Harris. This is just a small detail of the curved walkway between the two. Unfortunately the complete view of this is currently obscured by works.
Built in 1828, designed by Matthew Habershon, clock tower added in 1842. In 1975 it was converted for use as a theatre. Grade II listed.
Half roundhouse built for the Leeds and Thirsk Railway in 1849 for locomotive maintenance. Still in use as a wine warehouse. Designed by Scottish railway engineer Thomas Grainger (1794–1852).
Dating from 1851 and designed in mock Jacobean style by Anthony Salvin, Keele Hall is today within the campus of Keele University, Staffordshire.

The distinctive neighborhood on Wellington's east side as seen from just below the mountaintop of the same name. The row of thin houses in the middle was pretty neat.
Designed by English architect John Spencer, The Strand was built in 1891 and opened in 1892, as the fifth and last of the arcades built in Sydney in the Victorian era. It is the only one remaining in its original form today. The Arcade was originally known as the 'City Arcade' and sometimes as 'Arcade Street'. In 1891 it was named after the famous London Street that links the City of London and the City of Westminster. The Strand was London's smartest theatre, hotel and shopping street in the early 1900s.

Have no idea what this tree is but it was sure unusual looking. Leaves were soft on the tree but when dead they were hard and sharp. At first I thought the fallen twigs on the ground came from another plant!
Albert Street.
Harrogate is home to many wonderful Victorian stone buildings. Many of the original features have been obscured by modern shop windows and entrances at ground level, so one must always remember to look up for some delightful Victorian architectural features.
I work in an old town & there are some houses that still have a lot of their old architectural details and here's one. Sorry about the branches but I couldn't climb the tree and cut them down in the amount of time I had.
Another interior view of Leeds Corn Exchange (1860-62). Another matchless building by Cuthbert Brodrick - a native of my old home town of Hull.
I've always meant to take a walk in this area and get some shots of the many gorgeous homes. Between the wedding ceremony and the reception, Brooke (aka. Typos in the key of E) and I went on an impromptu photowalk down to the Cathedral and back along Summit.
House Moving 21st Century Style: While building moving is no new thing in Chicago, the moving today of Henry Ives Cobb's Rees House one block north on Prairie Ave (to a site two blocks south of Glessner House) has been called, at 762 tons, the heaviest house move in US history. It's a dubious honor. The Rees House was in the way of a stadium to be built adjacent to the ever expanding McCormick Place Convention Center. A preservation easement on the exterior and City Landmarking of both the exterior and interior (which has survived amazingly well) couldn't prevent the power of eminent domain from taking over the site, but they did put pressure on to move the house itself.
Nov 12th - A few more in progress pics from today. I got there around 9AM and they had started to turn the corner into the lot. By11:30 they had made some progress, but didn't move much by noon when I had to head out.

Ferndale is a very attractive town, located in northwest California. It is full of beautifully restored Victorian homes and businesses.

Over a doorway on Prince William Street. This building, like many others south of King St., was erected shortly after Saint John's Great Fire of 1877. I have no idea who or what is represented by the sculpted face; and "G. R." probably doesn't refer to King George, since Victoria was monarch at the time.
This particular face also shows up in my "December 25, 2012" series.

They've done a reasonably good job of retrofitting the buildings to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act yet keeping the historical character as much as possible. The main entrance faces the street and has porch steps as most Craftsman homes do. This is the rear but doesn't feel like a lesser entrance because it's in the interior of the Heritage Square and many buildings face that interior.
Built to replace the old town hall and finished in 1864, the design of Northampton Guildhall was by Bristol architect, E W Godwin, who had won the competition for the design of the new building. Victorian high Gothic in style the facade is covered with intricate sculptures illustrating episodes from local history ( both real and imaginary), saints and monarchs and the symbols of local trades.
