Inside the splendour of Cuthbert Brodrick's Corn Exchange - two levels of specialist retail.

London locals and tourists gather on the south bank ( The Queens Walk ) of the river Thames close to beautiful Tower Bridge. As you can see it was cloudy but it was very warm so some people were enjoying lounging around and drinking. Always great to see people enjoying themselves in such a huge but beautiful city like London.

New Court was the first major building of St John's College in Cambridge to be built on the west side of the River Cam. It dates from 1831 and was designed by Thomas Rickman and Henry Hutchinson in the Gothic style.

After being intrigued for more than half a century by this fine Victorian building close to the Hull city centre, I finally learn its story. It was built in 1895 as the factory and offices for W.T. Owbridge, maker of Owbridge’s Lung Tonic, a cough mixture. The factory closed in 1972. In 1990 the William Sutton Trust took over the site, incorporating the building into a residential scheme.

The Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge is quite simply my favourite museum. Founded in 1816, it houses the art and antiquities collection of the University of Cambridge. Having initially been based elsewhere in the city, the “Founder’s Building” was designed by George Basevi, completed by C. R. Cockerell and opened in 1848. The splendid entrance hall is by Edward Middleton Barry and was completed in 1875. The picture features the ceiling of the entrance hall.

1299 Haight Street stands as a quintessential example of San Francisco’s rich architectural history, particularly in the vibrant Haight-Ashbury neighborhood. This three-story building is a testament to the city’s early 20th-century architectural style, blending elements of Edwardian and Victorian design. The exterior features a mix of wood siding and stone, creating a visually striking facade that captures the eye of anyone passing by.

One of the most distinctive aspects of this building is its detailed craftsmanship. The intricate woodwork, seen in the cornices and window frames, reflects the attention to detail characteristic of the era. The building’s upper levels boast classic bay windows, which not only enhance the aesthetic appeal but also provide ample natural light to the interiors. The central, arched window on the top floor adds a unique architectural flourish, contributing to the building’s historic charm.

The ground level of 1299 Haight is clad in a textured stone finish, providing a contrasting yet complementary base to the otherwise wooden structure. This combination of materials not only reinforces the building’s durability but also accentuates its architectural elegance. The entrance, framed by decorative pillars and a carved stone lintel, invites residents and visitors into a space that is as rich in history as it is in character.

Positioned on the corner of Haight and Central Avenue, this building is perfectly situated in the heart of one of San Francisco’s most iconic neighborhoods. The Haight-Ashbury district is famous for its countercultural heritage, and living here means being surrounded by a blend of historic architecture, vibrant street art, and an eclectic mix of shops and cafes.

For those seeking a home that encapsulates the essence of San Francisco’s past while being in the midst of a lively, ever-evolving community, 1299 Haight Street offers an unparalleled living experience.

The building dates back to 1894 and was once known as Lennoxtown Public School with it's dual-purpose to educate both junior and senior pupils which was the chief school for all the surrounding villages.

The School status changed yet again in 1955 to that of Junior Secondary with some senior pupils having to travel the 7 miles to Kilsyth (as they still do today). It became a fully fledged Primary School only , in 1963.

Built in the Nineteenth Century, this little weatherboard cottage may be found in the small alpine town of Wandiligong.

Proudly it sits behind its wire fence and well established garden. It features a corrugated iron roof and a verandah to help keep the cottage cool and shady during the warmer summer months. You might notice that it has two gables, and this is because the original cottage would only have been a couple of rooms making up the front building. However, in ensuing years the owners of the cottage became more prosperous, and were thus able to extend the cottage twice its original size. It is not unusual to see little miner's cottages with two or three extensions added onto the back of the original cottage. This once would have been the cottage home of one of the many miners that panned for gold during the Victorian Gold Rush.

Wandiligong is a town in north-eastern Victoria in the alpine region around 330 kilometres from Melbourne. Established in the 1850s as part of the Victorian Gold Rush, Wandiligong became a hub for many gold miners, including a large Chinese community. At its peak, the town was home to over two thousand inhabitants and boasted shops, churches, a public library, halls and even an hotel. Much has changed since those heady days of the gold rush, and the picturesque town nestled in a valley and built around the Morses Creek, is now a sleepy little town full of picturesque houses which are often let to visitors to the area. The whole town is registered with the National Trust of Australia for its historic landscape and buildings of historic value.

This home once belonged to a political figure around the turn of the century. Having most recently served as a bed and breakfast, it has since sat empty and unused for a few years but is still in remarkably good condition. With it's classic Victorian architecture and incredibly detailed woodwork, I hope it stays that way and finds a new life and purpose.

Nestled in the historic heart of San Francisco’s famed Haight-Ashbury district, 1300 Haight Street stands as a testament to Victorian architectural prowess and the enduring spirit of one of the city’s most storied neighborhoods. This eye-catching corner building, with its warm yellow facade and distinctive bay windows, offers a glimpse into San Francisco’s rich past while remaining firmly rooted in its vibrant present.

As you stroll down these storied sidewalks, you’re walking alongside ghosts of the Summer of Love; 1300 Haight was there when flower power bloomed and revolution was in the air. Today, it houses modern businesses that cater to both locals and tourists seeking to capture a piece of this area’s legendary charm.

The architecture itself is a marvel—ornate cornices dance along the roofline while period details around windows and doors hark back to an era when craftsmanship reigned supreme. The rounded bay windows serve not just as an aesthetic delight but also as vantage points from which residents can observe the bustling life below.

For those looking to experience San Francisco through an authentic lens, 1300 Haight offers more than just accommodation or retail space; it provides a portal into history.

Built in 1883, a mile from Brush Park (see previous photos). This building originally housed a horse-drawn Silsby steam engine and hose reel cart (the steam engine pumped water and sprayed it through the hose). Engine House No. 11 was retired as a firehouse in 1972, and is a Michigan State Historic Site, listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Nah, St. Louis.

San francisco, California

a row of Victorian houses, many of which have been "redone" over the decades

Built in 1885 by a local lumber baron, this fabulous building of Queen Ann style Victorian architecture is now the private Ingomar Club which has been responsible for the restoration project. One of the most beautiful buildings in California and also one of the most photographed (over 1300 photos on flickr).

The chapel was called by Goodhart-Rendel "possible one of the three or four buildings in Oxford of most architectural importance".

Erected in 1835, this elegant domed canopy once proudly sheltered a statue of Queen Victoria, who surveyed Harrogate with appropriate imperial hauteur. But the statue’s long gone — quietly removed and largely forgotten — leaving behind only the canopy, now a ghost of civic grandeur. Once a monument to monarchy, now a shaded stop for shoppers and sighs, it stands as a curious reminder that not all secrets are saucy… but some are still worth lingering under.
