Paddle steamers had been plying the Thames since the 1830s with various degrees of commercial success. In 1905 the London County Council decided to set up its own river boat service and compete with the already existing companies so that an up to date river transport system could be implemented. It was not a success, by 1907 the idea was scrapped and the boats sold, invariably at a considerable loss. The river was more utilised in Victorian and Edwardian times but even then it was hard to make it pay.
The Paddle Steamer in the foreground is the 'Carlyle' which was built for the LCC by the Thames Ironworks at Blackwall. It was sold to the Tay Steamboat Company in 1909.

River Thames from the South Bank in London.
We were looking for the Christmas Market that was around here.
Turns out that the South Bank Centre's Winter Festival starts from under the Hungerford Bridge. Was also some fun fair rides there as well!

This photograph is dated 1875, the club was built between 1873-1875 and looks in pristine condition. The scaffolding on the left of the photograph surrounds the construction of St. Stephen's Tavern which was completed in 1875 and still stands at the junction of Bridge Street and Cannon Row. Unfortunately St. Stephen's Club was demolished in 1994 to make way for the monstrosity which is Portcullis House.
Grade II listed: installed during the 1870's and located downstream of similar-type Sphinx Benches, Cleopatra's Needle and a couple of Sphinxes (on either side of Cleopatra's Needle). Looking out across the River Thames.

For a penny or two the old gent would let you have a look through his telescope at the Clock face of 'Big Ben' as well as trying to sell you some tourist tat. I have several photographs of this man from the earliest years of the 20th century until the thirties with his beard getting whiter and whiter, Tempus Fugit.
Another look at Cleopatra's Needle, Victoria Embankment.
It was when the handle of "Unite the Kingdom" protestors were still around London.
