HMS Wellington (launched Devonport, 1934) is a Grimsby-class sloop, formerly of the Royal Navy. During the Second World War, she served as a convoy escort ship in the North Atlantic. She is now moored alongside the Victoria Embankment, at Temple Pier, on the River Thames in London, England, as the headquarters ship of the Honourable Company of Master Mariners, where she is known as HQS Wellington. It was always the ambition of the founding members of the company to have a livery hall. Up to the outbreak of war in 1939, various proposals were examined, including the purchase of a sailing ship, Archibald Russell.

After the Second World War, it became apparent that the possibility of building a hall in the City of London had been rendered very remote. In 1947, the Grimsby-class sloop Wellington was made available by the Admiralty. The company decided to buy her with money subscribed by the members and convert her to a floating livery hall, an appropriate home for a company of seafarers.

The Metropolitan Police Marine Policing Unit (MPU) is responsible for policing 47 miles of the River Thames between Dartford and Hampton Court.

Taken from the Embankment side of the River Thames on Monday 11th May

The Embankment was part of a large double loop of tram track that was used to reverse cars ready for a retuen to South London. Here a Feltham tram on route 16 is heading for Westminster Bridge, and thence to Croydon and Purley.

This is a postcard published by J.J. Corbyn of York Street, Westminster showing Victoria Embankment looking north from the junction with Westminster Bridge. It is about 1910 and three people are waiting on the pedestrian refuge which doubles as a tram stop for trams heading north to the Kingsway Tram tunnel and Blackfriars Bridge. At this time the London County Council trams heading for north London through the tunnel were single deck trams, those heading for Blackfriars Bridge and south London were double deck trams.

the memorial is situated opposite the river Thames from the Millennium Wheel or London Eye, or the first right turn when you cross Westminster Bridge toward the Houses of Parliament. In fact, the turning is in front of Big Ben, with the sculpture/monument being a two-minute walk along the river.

The two funnel Clyde steamer TS Queen Mary was built at the William Denny shipyard at Dumbarton for Williamson-Buchanan. The 871 gross tons steamer was powered by three direct drive steam turbines, and carried 2086 passengers making her the largest (though not the longest) excursion turbine on the River Clyde.

In 1981 the ship was bought by the Lau family and taken south to London to become a floating restaurant but unfortunately it did not end well until 1987 where it was sold to the Bass PLC. She underwent a £2.5m refurbishment in 1997 and was moored at Victoria Embankment. Facilities included two bars and two function rooms. The top deck of the ship was used as an open air venue with bar facilities.

In November 2009, the ship was towed out of London. She was purchased by Samuel Boudon who had plans for her renovation and mooring in La Rochelle, France as a floating restaurant and fitness centre.

In October 2015 the Glasgow-based charity Friends of TS Queen Mary purchased the ship. In May 2016, after being made seaworthy, the Queen Mary was towed from Tilbury to Greenock. The ship's return to the Firth of Clyde on 16 May 2016 was her first visit to her former home since 1981.

The ship is now berthed at the entrance of Princes' Dock beside the Glasgow Science Centre.

How could anyone with a shred of decency left in them not like being on a march in which someone had bothered to think up and then create and carry around this personal message to the Chancellor George Osborne, who, like a reverse Robin Hood, steals from the poor to give to the rich. Reminds me of this poem by Wendy Cope

After the Lunch

On Waterloo Bridge where we said our goodbyes,

the weather conditions bring tears to my eyes.

I wipe them away with a black woolly glove

And try not to notice I've fallen in love

On Waterloo Bridge I am trying to think:

This is nothing. you're high on the charm and the drink.

But the juke-box inside me is playing a song

That says something different. And when was it wrong?

On Waterloo Bridge with the wind in my hair

I am tempted to skip. You're a fool. I don't care.

the head does its best but the heart is the boss-

I admit it before I am halfway across

I took this photos of a campaigner at The People's Climate March, a global event that took place on September 21, 2014, and involved hundreds of thousands of people in 166 countries taking part in over 2,800 events calling for urgent, coordinated action on climate change. The trigger for the coordinated events around the world was the Climate Summit at the United Nations headquarters in New York, taking place on September 23, when 120 world leaders will be trying to create a new global climate treaty.

This photo was taken at the London event, which involved around 40,000 people, who marched from Temple on Victoria Embankment to Parliament Square. It was a largely sunny day, a very friendly atmosphere, and a powerful demonstration of widespread concern about the climate that is an important antidote to the cynical and well-funded climate change denial lobby, and the general indifference of politicians, who sometimes make positive noises about the environment, but are more generally in bed with the polluters -- and, in addition, find themselves unable to tell the truth to their electorates: that we urgently need to make the environment a priority, and that doing so has to involve curbing our own destructive appetites.

The Embankment was one of the busiest stretches on the entire London tram system. Soon after replacement by buses the service frequency fell, and a useful transport corridor was lost.

This is Victoria Embankment looking north from near the junction with Horse Guards Avenue. This is a wartime photograph showing the London Plane Trees which line Victoria Embankment with their lower trunks painted as to show up more clearly during the blackout.
