Union Pacific's Rockford local has entered Madison Street, meeting a yellow Volkswagon as it comes around the bend at the south end of the YMCA facility on 12-31-14.

From the sketchbook. Been adding a little watercolor to stuff lately.

A rarity on the roads nowadays... a B.M.W. with working indicators...

Another vehicle I received in my trade with LegoUli. Will be used on Sicily and is also a great addition to my 1st Infantry Division troops. Rating 500/10 :p

If you like what I have so far, next one will blow your mind. :D

Ever in search of the elusive non-pcv vehicle L100SFB was something a bit special. New to Strathclyde Fire Brigade as L726UGA the command unit it was basically a Scania K93 bus / coach chassis with various modifications fitted to a Leicester Carriage builders body. The K93 never sold well as a bus with only a handful built, perhaps a co-incidence was Strathclyde Transport taking three at around the same time as this was new, with east lancs bodies registred TIB8511-3. I've been told stories about this vehicle surviving after sale from the fire service around 2006/7 in private ownership..would love to know more via flickr message if anyone knows...

YJ16EOS DAF Vanhool TX27 Astromega looking fantastic as it is prepared for its first tour, thanks once again to the guys at Sharpes for being so helpful.

The FDNY received 25 Seagrave 100 ft. rearmount ladder trucks in late 2001 and in 2002. The trucks are currently being replaced in front-line use by new Ferrara units, but most will be kept as spares. Teething problems with the Ferrara units mean that a lot of the spares are actually still being driven.

CFR Marfa locos 60-0857/62-1404 pass a very over grown Sandau station with a freight bound for Cluj on 2/7/15.

Now this is a super rare one!!, Only the second one I've seen.

From left to right Graz Tigr capable of transporting 8 personnel (the Graz Puma was too big for my scale so I'm using this instead), RAV-1 (Reconnaissance Attack Vehicle) and FAV (Fast Attack Vehicle. They are armed with heavy machineguns and 40mm grenade launchers.

Strangely, this vehicle has also been seen in royal SEG convoys.

A vehicle which didn't seem to hang around for a great deal of time in Scotland was this former West Riding ECW bodied Leyland Olympian. Seen in Renfield St Glasgow in 2007 on a peak hour X21.

There were a few more breaks in the clouds so we stopped by the loitering Ferromex SD70ACE 4045 and waited for the sun and were rewarded.

Two Lovely UK Specialist Ambulance Service vehicles, seen here at the Hampshire HQ. Many thanks to the company for arranging and completing the visit!

Last stop on my nostalgic tour of former Scottish Bus Group regions is Northern, these colours, along with Fife's red and cream, were the first ones I saw from the SBG as a kid coming and going from Dundee bus station, ah, those were the days! Stagecoach Bluebird Enviro 400 has been painted up into the livery used on Northern's Leyland Olympian / ECW TSO 14X. My thanks again goes to Jamie Martin for the use of his original photo.

Whilst we're looking at poor quality enhanced images taken in half light, here's another!

This old girl, an AEC Mammoth Major, arrived a week or so ago, purchased by a friend and fellow 'Flickrite'.

There appeared to be some confusion over whether it was actually 'runner' or not, it being bought in the belief that it was, but the people from who's yard it came claiming it last ran twenty years ago.

Anyway, with the aid of a powerful 'jump pack' on the starter and a couple of false goes due to poor connections, the old girl burst into life within a minute overall. Not too bad if the twenty years is accurate and also allowing for a temperature of 4 degrees 'c'.

Should make a very pleasant preserved vehicle methinks.

Birds of Stratford could provide an interesting mix of vehicles back in 1964. Far left is GFM 909 which was an ex Crosville Leyland/ECW, then an unidentified bus which I suspect was, like GFM 909 ex A1 Service of Ardrossen. Next along is an ex London Transport roofbox RT also unidentified, next, unusual for Birds, a Riley RM car possibly once owned by a Birds employee and just dumped. When I first saw this car a year or so earlier it was in good condition and would have been preserved these days however in 1964 it was a 10 quid banger, good enough to run around in until it failed an MOT. Finally in the row ex ex Birmingham City Transport HOV 787 a Metro-Cammell bodied Daimler GVG6 it's fleet number (1787) carefully scratched out.

This Pontiac (which also includes the two prior pictures) truly amazed me. If someone described it to me I would have probably scoffed and laughed. I would have had many negative things to say. Having seen it in person however my attitude is completely the opposite. Perhaps it's just me but I think no one could really appreciate this 'restored' vehicle without seeing it in person.

Most cars at the car shows are labors of love (as was this car) that have had a lot of time consuming and expensive work. They usually have extensive body work done to get them to 'at least' original condition. Sometimes they are custom painted and often have several clear coats applied in the effort to obtain perfection. Not necessarily the case with this Pontiac.

The owner of this vehicle took a quite different and unusual approach. He left all the imperfections and warts alone. Any place that was not structurally sound was repaired as needed, otherwise the doors would not function or a bumper would be laying on the ground, for instance. After all. the car is drivable. Everything else was simply painted over. Dents, dings, even rust holes were not repaired but only lovingly covered with new paint. And it looks great. I so love it.

This beauty was not restored in this fashion simply to save money and do it on the cheap (although the owner admits that was part of it) but mostly to truly preserve it's history. Far better, I think, than the traditional approach. Well, actually there's a place for both methods but this one really resonated with me. These labors of love are often personal but this owner took it to another level.

The car owner proudly showed me several large dents all over the roof and many imperfections elsewhere on the car. He stated that his father owned this car and many others when he was a young boy. The area where these cars were stored became a make-shift playground of sorts. He and his buddies used to play in, on and around all these vehicles. The roof dents manifested from the many jumps the boys would make from one vehicle to the next. It is these dents and imperfections that have been saved, if you will. What a precious tribute to his personal history. What an awesome idea.

I would like to note also that just because the dents and rust holes have been allowed to remain does not mean that the paint job is lacking. The paint on this gem is is nothing short of gorgeous. I wish I would have better captured the several layers, tones, textures and blends that this paint work offered. It may not be covering a perfectly smooth layer of sheet metal but it is perfectly showcasing a slice of history and life.

Surprisingly, this auto became my favorite piece in the show. I love it's uniqueness, it's simply beauty and it's special record of the past.

Genius!

Condemned M50495 awaits it fate in the yard at Derby Carriage works, 13th August 1977.

Unit History

Three hundred and two class 104 vehicles were built by Birmingham Railway Carriage & Wagon Co. Ltd between 1957 and 1958. They were formed into fifteen power trailer two car sets, fifty six three car sets and twenty six four car sets and allocated to the London Midland and North Eastern Regions. M50495 is a Driving Motor Composite Lavatory (DMCL) and was part of a three car class 104 unit allocated to Derby Etches Park. When the local services between Derby, Nottingham, Leicester, Lincoln and Stoke/Crewe were dieselized in 1957/58 it was achieved with nineteen Cravens class 105 three car DMU sets (ordered at the start of 1956, being delivered in 1957/58) and eight Birmingham Railway Carriage and Wagon class 104 three car DMU sets (delivered in 1957). In 1968 the nineteen three-car Cravens sets were reformed into power twins and were transferred to Accrington, Lancashire being replaced in the East Midlands by Swindon class 120 three car Cross Country sets from the Western Region. However the eight BRCW sets were retained at Etches Park. On the 3rd December 1976 M50495 was the lead vehicle of a three car class 104 set working 1M68, 15:35 Norwich – Birmingham when it was in collision with a lorry, loaded with carrots at Chivers No.1 occupation crossing between Norwich and Ely. Regrettably the driver of 1M68 was killed in the collision.

Here's the rig that gets me to many of my photography destinations, a 2013 Toyota FJ Cruiser Trail Teams Edition 4WD. I've had it for 6 months and so far very happy with the utility and ability.

Additional equipment includes Bilstein 6112 front and 5160 rear shocks with lift kit, steel rear bumper, heavy duty skid plates and rock sliders. Recently, I added the 30" LED light bar into the lower bumper grill as well as a pair of 6" round halogen fog lights aimed low to get under the thick tule fog of those Delta mornings. The steel mesh roof rack permits standing to get above ground obstacles with my tripod when needed. I've also installed a custom sleeping platform with lockable storage drawers, built by a photographer and FJ owner.

Photo shot early this morning in a mustard field in Brentwood, CA. I combined ambient twilight with some light painting using a small LED panel to light the vehicle. Lens is the A120mm f/4 Macro.

See you out there!
