An editorial double page spread illustration for Bizarre Magazine called When Towns Go Mad for an article on communities experiencing collective insanity under the influence of psychedelic poisoning from fungus or other influences. The article referenced Pont St. Esprit, a small town in southern France, that in 1951 it became famous as the site a mysterious medical outbreak. The cause was assumed to be ergotism - poisoning caused by chemicals produced by a fungus which can infect grain crops. Contaminated bread was thought to be responsible. Symptoms reported included dreamy delirium, digestive disturbances, insomnia and hallucinations because some of the toxins are chemically related to LSD, though there are other theories to the cause.

Here begins a new series of square vignette illustrations based on the early Hanna-Barbera TV cartoon characters (roughly 1957 - 1964). A vignette is commonly used in design and philately (the study of stamps/postal history) as an unusual or unique image framing method.

Our inaugural characters are the stars of H-B's Quick Draw McGraw Show (1959). The diminutive burro Baba Looey was Quick Draw's loyal sidekick, with a name derived from the popular signature song "Babalu" by Desi Arnaz of I Love Lucy fame. Baba Looey's hero worship forever helped get his life-long pal "Queekstraw" out of jams when battling cattle-rustlers, bank robbers or saving damsels in distress. He may be best-known, however, as the impetus for the nickname of Howard Stern's long-suffering radio producer Gary "Baba Booey" Dell'Abate.

Baba's high-pitched Latino accent came courtesy of Hanna-Barbera mainstay and voice-over legend Daws Butler. Along with Don Messick, Daws voiced many of the central H-B characters that will be featured in this series.

Another originally inspired calligraphy artpiece of mine obtained from a verse from the Holy Quran. This verse contains 8 of the 99 Beautiful names of Allah (God). I used the "Alif" alphabet to generate a flower-type pattern radiating outwards.

Dipingere.
