Having lots of problems identifying damselflies, was going through a load of photos of what I had thought were Azure or Common Blues when I came across these two shots (I think of the same damselfly). The giveaway is the two blue spots on the thorax (described in my book as like "blood dripping from fangs". Nice.

Two adults with one of their young born this summer, now the same size as its parents.

The male Variable Dancer has the virtue of being easy to identify.

Pair of Variable Oystercatchers by the Manukau that have raised three chicks. I first saw them on December 16 and went back today to find the chicks now fledged and as big as their parents. The parents still protect them, however, hustling them to move away (including short flights) if I got too close.

Female variable jawfish (Opistoganthus sp. ?) at Melasti, Bali, Indonesia. One would think hiding in a hole and being bright orange in 5m of water would be mutually exclusive.

It took longer to get the second block done as I was waiting for a special fabric for the center square.

On a Farewell Spit tour with Eco Tours, we stopped off at Fossil Point to admire some of the rock formations on the beach. We spotted a small group of variable oystercatchers, displaying territorial behaviours (commonly seen in the breeding season).

Also known in these parts as Puna Hawk. A split from Red-backed Hawk (note the red back). Usually seen flying. Confined to higher elevations in upper NW Argentina. This one was perched by the Cuesta del Obispo Rd., Salta Province.
