When I first saw this damselfly in the vegetation alongside one of the pools at Burton Mere Wetlands I assumed it was an azure damselfly - by far the commonest blue on the site.

However, the mark on the second abdominal segment is much heavier, which led me to the conclusion that this is a variable damselfly - a first for me. Others have subsequently confirmed this ID.

Variable star showing value and intensity. Assignment: choose colors that are mostly intense or low-intensity (bright vs dull). Use a medium or dark value for the center square...a light value for surrounding triangles, dark value for star points...light value for background.

On closer inspection, it appears that all the blue damselfles at Berrington Pool are Variable, not Azure, as I had thought!

This Variable Cracker, Hamadryas feronia, is nearly invisible on mottled tree trunks in its native Central American habitat. Crackers are named for the weak noise they make in flight.
