This Variable Oakleaf Moth Caterpillar (Lochmaeus manteo) was unearthed during the building of a hiking trail in mid December at Distant Hill Gardens in Walpole, NH.
The tiny spotted larvae of the variable oakleaf caterpillar at first feed gregariously on the lower leaf surface near the expended egg shells. They usually skeletonize portions of one to three leaves in a cluster. The presence and frequency of these clusters of tissue-paper thin skeletonized leaves on beech in early August is an early indicator of the degree of defoliation which can be expected. As the larvae grow, they change their color pattern several times and may exhibit many individual variations. They also separate after the first molt and begin to feed singly. From this point on they cease to skeletonize and consume entire portions of the leaf. They pass through five instars prior to dropping to the soil to pupate. At maturity the color is generally green but a fairly high percentage of individuals may be deep pink or reddish. Mature larvae are roughly 1.5" long with a distinctive dorsal band which is often dark red in color. The head is most often green with two darker vertical lines which are usually black, edged with creamy white. There is also a definite yellowish lateral line along each side of the larva at or below the spiracles (breathing pores) which separates this species from other prominents (Heterocampa).
Mature larvae drop to the soil when done feeding, usually in late August or September. They burrow into the soil beneath the leaf litter and form a loose silk lined cell. Here they become inactive larvae (pre-pupae) and remain in this state throughout the winter.

Yeah, I spent a lot of time designing this bastard. It's a variable pitch rack. For not-engineers, it's the part of a rack and pinion steering system that turns the rotation of the pinion gear into linear motion to turn the wheels. The variable pitch part means that where a normal rack is flat, this one is curved, to change the way it feels and acts when the driver turns the wheel.
Probably a lot of work for little result, but I still did it, and I think it impressed the judges. So there you have it.
Today was back to Pevensey levels as the forecast was for sunshine that didn't happen and the wind was quite chilly. So Tony, Amber and I set off for our usual walk without too much expectation but the levels usually don't let us down. So we stopped for coffee having seen very little and as we eat Jackie's cake we could hear the Cuckoo which was my first of the year. I kept looking at what i thought was a group of leaves in the distance but something niggled at me so I looked and it was the Cuckoo although a very long way off. So 11 images for the day and it was as always a very enjoyable day.
You already know that the ability to roll your tongue is governed by a gene. Is the gene dominant, or recessive? Um... not sure. Parents who can't roll their tongues can have a child who can. That works for a recessive gene (r) meaning "can roll" if the dominant one (R) expresses itself as "can't roll". But possibly, roll is determined by some interacting genes that need to be around in some combination to let you roll your tongue.
But the story isn't so simple. If one of a pair of genetically identical twins can roll her tongue, it doesn't mean the other can. Seems there must be interaction between the genetics and the environment. Hey, now there's a surprise. Let's run that one again. Your DNA isn't a blueprint for you. It's a set of instructions that interacted, and continues to interact, with your environment, to create you. Your genetic clone would not think or feel or react like you.
So the environment can interact with genetics. Which bit of the environment interacted with her genes to create the ability to roll her tongue? How the hell should I know? How would you even begin to answer that question?
This messy expression of genes is called variable penetrance. Sounds sordid, vaguely, but what's really sordid is that we are plonking about, messing with the genetics of things, and calling it genetic engineering. It sounds nice and clinical, and predictable. So it is, if you pretend variable penetrance doesn't really happen - the universe is tidier that way, and we can play sorcerer's apprentice to our heart's content.

These PTP-1 F-Type variable spring assemblies fabricated from A-36 carbon steel, were custom designed to accommodate a height of 11-11/16" while keeping the same spring rate. The F-Type variable is used to support the pipe from below and are typically mounted to concrete pads via anchor bolts or welded to structural steel. The variables are designed for loads up to 6,500 lb. and a total upward travel of 5/16".
