Arduino-based temperature controller with variable rate temperature change. It will hold an initial temperature for a specified amount of time, and will then ramp that temperature up or down, and hold at a final temperature. For example: heat a water bath for chocolate to 130 and keep it there for 10 minutes (assuming it will take that long to melt all of the chocolate). Then reduce temperature by 1 degree every 10 seconds for 40 iterations, and keep at a tempered 90 degrees until you power everything off. Many cheese making recipes specify heating from X to Y at no more than 1 degree every minute, so this is perfect for that. No more hovering over a water bath for hours!

Even tough it was a BH Tony and I went to the Pevensey levels again due to circumstances beyond our control. So anyway we were hoping for a less windy day but that didn't happen. Anyway it was a glorious day with lots to see but the wind made photography more challenging than usual so not so many chances to to make images but we managed so after having another great day and walk I still managed 19 images.

Variable Cranesbill, aka Geranium sp. 2, one of several Victorian Geraniums yet to be named. Sepals are about 3.5 mm long, with minute hairs and some longer hairs, and possibly a pale margin, and a pointed tip. Olinda, Victoria, Australia, April 2014.

Another Variable ND shot this time using the 11-16mm Tokina lens. I was set up very close to the leaves. It was so wide open you can actually see my tripod leg if you look close on the bottom. OOPS! Never saw that until I started to look at the pictures.

This is an enlargement from my M31 image, showing the location of Edwin Hubble's "VAR 1" star. This is a Cepheid variable star that enabled Hubble to calculate the distance to M31 and thus prove it was outside our Milky Way. Our idea of the extent of the Universe suddenly got a lot bigger.

 

An interesting demonstration of the progress of technology: Hubble's 30 minutes exposure on a photographic plate through a 100" reflector vs two hours exposure with a $1000 camera through 107mm refractor.

This interior view of the Variable Density Tunnel (VDT) at the NACA's Langley Laboratory, taken shortly after it opened in 1922, looks downstream. Note the wooden construction, the propeller in the background and the observation windows. These windows aligned with small portholes in the pressure shell.

The variable oystercatcher (Haematopus unicolor) is a species of wader in the family Haematopodidae. It is endemic to New Zealand. The Maori name is torea-pango. Curio Bay.

3rd morph... Oenanthe picata opistholeuca

 

3 morphs of Variable Wheatear are found in India, the first one which is the nominate species O picata has black upperparts, head and white underparts including belly.

 

The 2nd morph, O picata capistrata has a white crown, as though wearing a white cap, black upperparts and white underparts with belly.

Variable coquina clam trails in Florida, USA. (December 2012)

 

Bivalves are bilaterally symmetrical molluscs having two calcareous, asymmetrical shells (valves) - they include the clams, oysters, and scallops. In most bivalves, the two shells are mirror images of each other (the major exception is the oysters). They occur in marine, estuarine, and freshwater environments. Bivalves are also known as pelecypods and lamellibranchiates.

 

Bivalves are sessile, benthic organisms - they occur on or below substrates. Most of them are filter-feeders, using siphons to bring in water, filter the water for tiny particles of food, then expel the used water. The majority of bivalves are infaunal - they burrow into unlithified sediments. In hard substrate environments, some forms make borings, in which the bivalve lives. Some groups are hard substrate encrusters, using a mineral cement to attach to rocks, shells, or wood.

 

The fossil record of bivalves is Cambrian to Recent. They are especially common in the post-Paleozoic fossil record.

 

Shown above are numerous winding trails in a supratidal sandy marine shoreline environment. Prima facie, these were suspected to be worm trails, but they were actually made by variable coquina clams, Donax variabilis. This clam species has a smooth, small, Tellina-like shell that varies considerably in color (hence the species name). It is common in shallow marine sandy environments, ranging from the intertidal zone to moderately shallow subtidal settings. The individuals that made these trails were in the supratidal part of a sandy marine shoreline. They likely reached this area during a then-recent storm, which usually results in a temporarily high sea level (storm surge). After the storm, the clams found themselves in a non-permanently wet or moist environment and made trails in search of water before dying.

 

Variable coquina clams can be abundant in intertidal zone sandy beach environments of southwestern Florida. When the sand is disturbed (pick up a couple handfuls in the swash zone and place it back down), many Donax are often visible - they immediately burrow back down into the sediments.
