Annie Leibovitz had a reading for her new book "Life at Work" and I was among the lucky 380 people that made it into the Harold Washington Library in Chicago to hear her read and get her autograph!

This marvelous Miss Elaine nylon nightgown in seafoam feels soooo nice to wear! I love how the light nylon drapes on my body and how silky it feels. Underneath I have on Vanity Fair light blue nylon brief panties and matching VF bra. I feel very feminine sitting here! And don't you just love these cute pull on ballet slippers I found in the same color ?!

more from the acropolis museum

on black

-----------------------------------------------------------

EDIT: i just got news that this image has been published in the august 2010 issue of Geo Saison in germany for a feature on athens!

-----------------------------------------------------------

yesterday evening i was thrilled to visit the acropolis museum in athens.

i have very few words to describe my feelings seeing, for the first time, these superlative treasures of humanity, produced by some of its most brilliant minds, masterfully displayed in a sleek jewel-case of a building.

understanding the importance of the acropolis, and especially the parthenon, is highly fulfilling. as an introduction, if you haven't seen secrets of the parthenon, i strongly urge you to do so.

the gallery at the top level of the museum is a contemporary counterpart, of sorts, to the parthenon itself -- an airy frame for the uppermost sculptures of the temple, surrounded by the light of the attica sky. circular metal columns replace the original marble ones, the pediments are placed on either end of the rectangular plan, the metopes surround the outer perimeter above head height and the frieze is placed eye-level on the innermost wall of the structure. it's easy to understand the original position for each piece -- all one has to do is glimpse over to the original temple, in full view.

portions of the sculptures and reliefs are replicas, occupying the space of the original pieces that exist elsewhere in the world, most notably the ones purloined by lord elgin in the early 19th century, and now showcased in the british museum.

of course, it's a ridiculous state of affairs. christopher hitchens makes the case eloquently in his book, the elgin marbles: should they be returned to greece?, and most recently in his article, 'the lovely stones' in vanity fair:

'i’ve written a whole book about this controversy and won’t oppress you with all the details, but would just make this one point. if the mona lisa had been sawed in two during the napoleonic wars and the separated halves had been acquired by different museums in, say, st. petersburg and lisbon, would there not be a general wish to see what they might look like if re-united? if you think my analogy is overdrawn, consider this: the body of the goddess iris is at present in london, while her head is in athens. the front part of the torso of poseidon is in london, and the rear part is in athens. and so on. this is grotesque.'

it's always tricky to get satisfactory shots amongst the crowds... luckily my stay extended to closing time and i managed to shoot a few frames as people were leaving.

one of my favorites is this one of the acropolis, as viewed from the surrounding glass wall of the top gallery, during sunset. if you line up the window panes and the temple on the hill, you'll confirm that they are completely parallel, as both structures have the same orientation. the backs of the metopes are visible on the top of the image.

i'll be working on and uploading some of the more successful images i shot over the next few days.

this is an HDR image compiled from 3 exposures and processed on photomatix. i've placed the museum's location on the map.

Un lungo vestito

copre la tua florida figura.

Solo una fessura sul tuo viso

libera i tuoi occhi.

Li vedo, sono neri,

dolci, luminosi.

Il tuo sguardo languido

perso nella figura

dell'uomo che ti precede

nel tuo lento cammino,

lotta resisti contro ingiustizie

che non ti meriti ,

qualsiasi Dio non permetterebbe che i tuoi dolci occhi piangano di dolore .

Vai verso quel fascio di luce,

è l'Amore che ti meriti dolce creatura.

"I'd rather Make a Photograph, than to take it"

So yeah, yesterdays shot wasn't really my kind of photography.. I really like things that I make; make in the meaning of really creating the photograph.. The photographs I really like to shoot are the ones that I is already photographed in my mind, I know exactly what I want, I know what lighting, what pose, and I just have to excecute it..

This shot was worth the time, we shot this actually 3:30-6:30AM!

More about the shot, my friend G Shit See Him Here and Here (Yes, thats his nickname) had this photo of Lance Armstrong By Annie Leibovitz and he really wanted a similar one so we tried our best to do it, and actually it went really well.. I was in the right side of him splashing him with water, while the camera was on timer mode.. haha..

And NO! he had a banana leaf on his banana, cause no way in Hell I wanted to see his banana..

Crucifix on the North side of St. George's cemetery chapel. Jesus is too high to have been damaged by vandals. This 'disintigration' has been 'wear & tear' from the elements over the years. I find this very disturbing. It 'gives me the creeps' and represents mortality more than anything else i have ever photographed.

Just a few VFM from not an entire anthology. I took a subscription out for the magazine for quite a few years. I was like a mad woman last night, looking for two of my Vanity Fair magazines that have Demi Moore on the cover when her body was painted and on the other, pregnant. If my husband has thrown them it’s time to lawyer up.

Morning Reflections

There are times, especially early mornings, when the surface of the lake is so smooth, it's like a mirror. The reflections, especially on a day such as this, can be dizzying.

Once the "ho-hum" sunset sank below the horizon , a variety of more intense colors developed, briefly, before getting totally dark.

Los Angeles Photowalk, Sponsored by Bay Photo, evening of Jan 27!

You are all welcome to meet me at 4 PM on at the San Clemente pier! We will have a nice photowalk through sunset, which is around 5:20 PM. All skill levels, from beginner to master are welcome. A photowalk is just a laid-back event where we stroll around, take photos, and discuss the art of life and whatnot... I was considering giving a talk that night as well, but we don't have a nearby venue in mind. Maybe one of you has an idea for this...

A big thanks to Bay Photo, who is sponsoring the event. I'm going to be looking deeply into their metal prints very soon and give you a full report.

If you want to come, please leave a comment at www.stuckincustoms.com/2010/01/23/los-angeles-visit-photo...

Hans Zimmer, we Must Meet!

Has anyone read Atlas Shrugged and remember the great composer therein named Richard Halley? One of the heroes of the book mysteriously follows him around the world... I envision this dream-state with Hans Zimmer. In fact, I have a most wonderful project in mind that would be unique and right up his alley.

I saw this Hans Zimmer Video Interview about his new Sherlock Holmes soundtrack. It was very interesting to hear him talk about this stuff... I have all of his music starred and in special playlists, depending on my mood... In fact, I made a Hanz Zimmer iTunes iMix there on the right for you of some of my favorites. On occasion, I meet a fellow photographer that also loves Hans, and we have an instant connection that is difficult to describe.

Look at Zimmer's recording studio (Thanks @Tatorandtots for the link). Amazing. Of course, I could take a much better photo of it... but that is neither here nor there. My photography studio (only on paper for my upcoming home in New Zealand) will make a wonderful attempt to be a tiny bit cooler, only insofar as I want a window that looks at a beautiful landscape (which can be closed for absolute darkness whilst the post-processing is in full swing).

See my other mixes on Trey's Music List - Coming up soon - Ambient New Age, World Music, and other unexpected things...

Speaking at Google HQ, Stanford, and errrrr - something in the "Cupertino area"

The topic is "The Unexpected Art and Science of HDR Photography".

Although I can't discuss the latter, I can describe the talks I have at the Google HQ and Stanford. If you know someone at either institution, perhaps they can get you in. These are all closed, private events, but if you have some good Silicon Valley contacts, maybe you can make it happen. The presentation will be quite different than one might expect... I think it might prompt everyone to see the world from a slightly different perspective - I think we are finally getting to a spot where art and science can come back together in a natural way.

The talk at Google will be recorded in High Def and put on YouTube for the you all to see after everything gets edited together.

Daily Photo - California in the Morning

I woke up early one morning in the hotel to drive down to the seaside in San Luis Obispo to catch the sunrise. It's really beautiful and peaceful there. I'm not really a morning person -- this much should be known... more of a night-owl. But, maybe if I lived in California I might actually wake up early to catch the light of these sunrises.

I know I get many requests to be my assistant -- but you don't understand how bad it would be... I'd make you do things like wake up even before me, get me coffee, warm up the car, and all other sorts of things that you'd probably resent after a while... People seem to get over-enthusiastic about being my assistant, so I try to tell them bad things like this to dissuade them!

And below is a shot from a hotel I stayed in last time I was in LA... they have this cool outside firepit. I need more firepits in my life....

Daybreak over the lake.

The sunrise, itself, wasn't at all spectacular.

A few minutes later, however, we had a technicolor sky, with clouds of many colors, and perfect, mirror-like reflections on the lake to match.

“When work, commitment, and pleasure all become one and you reach that deep well where passion lives, nothing is impossible.”

i am continually captivated by the undeniable passion that emanates from imagery upon imagery on flickr. i sit in awe, and instead of feeling complacent about my own abilities - i am driven to explore and expand and grow in what i think and know - and i am inspired !!

now in all fairness this is nothing new - it’s been done - kind of a cliché - but - i loved it ! and i would have never tried if i had never gotten an account with flickr and pressed the favorite button time and time again through the accounts of visionaries !

so you few that i have tagged today - this is to say thank you for continual inspiration, where your passion in what you do charms not only me but countless more !!

The Eaton Centre in Toronto still has a decent bookstore, called Indigo Books.

Vanity Fair by William Makepeace Thackeray frequently makes lists of most difficult books to read, and at 671 pages, reaching the end ought to be a relief to anyone who dares to try getting through the whole thing.

Full disclosure: I have not read it, nor am I in the process of reading it, but my wife has been working on it off and on for 9 years, to give you an idea of its difficulty.
