© David K. Edwards. I know nothing about birds, but judging by the outlandish absurdity of their names, I assume they can legitimately be named anything at all by anyone who happens to see them. "Black Capped Corn Tit:" you bet. This bird had a red breast, so no doubt it is a Robin Redbreast. If in some weird, alternative universe I am wrong, do not tell me, because I truly do not care. This thing might also be a golden eagle, for all I know. Or a Ladder-Backed Osprey, on the hunt for its prey of pickled lampreys. With bangers and mashed peas.
I have said this six times and I will say it again: never read anything I write. This is a photo site, so limit your attention to the photos. Even if they depict birds, bugs, flowers, or elephant seals. Words are tords, and the elephant seals are all too close.
These are vampire bats that are on display at our zoo. They are drinking from a bowl of pigs blood that the zoo workers replenish each day. There are approximately 15-20 bats in this exhibit, and usually 4-5 bowls of blood.
It's a pretty cool thing to see up close, but it creeps some people out- even to the point that they will walk completely around this exhibit, and avoid it altogether.

Best live-action, this little guy was romping back and forth all afternoon with his wings flapping so hard it's a wonder he didn't take off at the almost-unbearably cute Howl-O-Ween 2006 small dog costume contest and parade in Alameda.

One of the vampire bats is feeding from the blood dish near the exhibit glass. Hopefully he wasn't too upset by the camera flash; he seemed to take it in stride.

Bruce Pyre is a 3.0 model Hero designed to have the appearance and abilities of a bat. His wings allow him to silently glide while his sonar detectors pick up enemy locations. His wing-mounted cannons emit sonic blasts. Despite his abilities, he is a very poor flying and often tears his wings. His sonic cannons really hurt his ears too (who designed these things!?).
