The Hamar (or Hamer or Hammer) is a tribe with a total population of about over 35,000, which lives in Hamer Bena woreda, a fertile part of the Omo River valley, in the Debub Omo Zone of the Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples Region (SNNPR). They are largely pastoralists, so their culture places a high value on cattle, the menaning of their life. There are at least 27 words for the subtle variations of colours and textures of a cattle! And each man has three names: a human, a goat and a cow name.
Honey collection is their major activity.They are as well semi nomadic and migrate every few months to find pastures for their goats and cattle. They have a special relationship with Bana-Bashada group than the others as they share a common language and culture.
Hamer society consists of a complex system of age groups. To pass from one age group to another involves complicated rituals. The bull-jumping is the most significant ceremony in the social life of the Hamer, the final test before passing into adulthood and in order to get married. The teen must jump naked over a number of bulls without falling. That is why we can mention it as cow jumping or bull leaping. If he is able to complete this task, he will become a man and be able to marry a woman.
The Hamar are very preoccupied with their beauty. They have at times spectacular haidresses.
Men use a wooden head rest which prevents the hair from touching the ground. It is used as head rest to protect the clay wig that some do on the top of the head, but it is also useful as a seat.
Women know many ways to do their hair. The most famous hair style is when their hair is in short tufts rolled in ochre and fat or in long twisted strands. These coppery coloured strands are called "goscha", it's a sign of health and welfare.
They also wear bead necklaces, iron bracelets around their arms, and decorate their breast with lots of cowry shells, like a natural bra.
Around married women's necks, you can see "esente": torques made of iron wrapped in leather. These are engagement presents; they are worn for life and indicate their husband's wealth. One of the necklaces catch more especially the attention: it is called the "bignere". It has a phallic-shape end. This jewelry can only be worn by a man's first wife.
Her statut is the higher one in Hamer society. The Hamar women who are not first wife have a really hard life and they are more slaves than wives...
The young unmarried girls, for their part, wear a kind of oval shape plate, in metal. It is used like a sunshield, but it tends to be rare in the tribe. Some of them have fund their future husband, but have to wait in their house until the so-called prentender can provide all the money for the ceremony: he has to pay for all the cows the bride-to-be's family asks for. These girls are called "Uta" and have to wait weeks, entirely covered with red clay... And no right to take baths or showers . They cannot go out of the house. Friends bring her food.
A cruel tradition still has currency for some Hamar: the babies who have the upper teeth first coming out, are abandonned in the bush. This tradition tends to disapear but NGO Omochild still save abandonned new borns in Jinka. Abandonments are all the more frequent than some Hamar believe that a child born out of formal marriages has "mingi", as to say something abnormal and unclean. For them, it is the expression of the devil, which may cause disasters such as epidemics or drought in the village. So, illegitimate children are abandoned. This kind of beliefs can also be observed in other Ethiopan tribes.
The weekly markets in Turmi and Dimeka are meeting points where tourist observation and photography can be satisfy against money.

Downing Street protesters demand "End the Tampon Tax" - London 02.04.2015
Protesters outside Downing Street adorned with fake tampons and bloodied underwear called for an end to what they say is a "skewed" VAT system which sees 5% paid on tampons which are classed as 'luxury items', yet gambling, houseboat mooring and military aircraft sales are exempted. This week the Salvation Army has reported that in many deprived areas up and down the UK increasing numbers of women can no longer afford to buy sanitary towels, and are having to resort to shockingly primitive and dangerous solutions such as newpaper, old socks or hankies, which makes the women prone to urinary tract infections. In response to this public health issue the Salvation Army has started providing tampons to women unable to afford them, including, of course, homeless women living on the streets.

In the year 2250 A.D. historians will look back (with their 100Mpx photon-sensors) on graphic design as a profession connected to the short period of 20th century industrial printing. In a more timeless manner it could be said that graphic design is the of placing and organizing symbols on a 2D surface. A discipline obsessed with flatness. Although ink-on-paper is no longer culturally or commercially hot this basic act is certainly still relevant. Ex-graphic designers are migrating to a new Flatland – the crystal clear display of a tablet or phone – and learn to co-exist with the unclean masses of Web Designers and Photoshop-users in order to survive.

Graphic design is a process of flattening, simplifying and ordering. 2D representations of reality are arranged on a symbolic surface. In order to present a clear and striking visual image contradictions need to be resolved and confusing details removed. From nuanced shading to smooth vector shapes. A dangerous operation.

The screen is the interface between the individual and the world. The point where the Cloud meets the dirt of human existence. Reality is constantly passing back and forth at this intersection. The user looking, touching, caressing, tenderly swiping, her reflection overlaid on top of the projection of the Other. Narcissus bent over his pool, seeing a dark shadow passing overhead. Flesh becomes images and images become flesh in a hi-speed HD cybernetic loop. The designer plays a intermediary role: optimizing the image for viral circulation and high clickability – using her skilled labour to shape the fluid, shapeshifting grids that we pour ourselves into.

The one-milli pictureplane is our public space. This is where social interactions take place, where low as well as high human emotions and desires are expressed with very real consequences. The Facebook-Like and the precision strike of a MQ-1 Predator are opposite points of the spectrum of human relations. The user gazing into her smartphone – the drone pilot looking at a screen in a command centre far away from where the actual violence takes place. A smooth gradient from the round-corner-rectangle marking the face of a friend in the social network to the crosshair marking the body of an enemy. The Terrorist is the opposite of the Facebook-Friend. The 0 to the 1. The Yin to the Yang. Complexities reduced to pure black or white and snapped to the grid. Either you’re a FFriend or you’re not-human.

In representative democracy the politician play a similar role to the designer. His job is to listen to the citizen/client and present a clear and simple Solution to the Problem. The citizen does not act – the politician represents him and acts in his place. Both politicians and designers are middlemen, service providers. They both try to justify their positions while claiming that their hands are tied by the market and complaining that there is nothing to be done about it.

2013. Everyone is an image producer. Torrents put the tools of the trade in the hands of the amateurs. At the same time the net has become centralized to a few major corporations who capture the value of the creative labour of its users. The wild frontier days are long gone. Our desire to be connected is monetized within sophisticated social grids. The Harlem Shake Meme is exposed as not a spontaneous expression of the global subconscious but the product of a viral marketing group owned by Youtube. In this situation the role of the cultural Prosumer educated for the old-world profession of the Graphic Designer should be to use this knowledge to propose alternatives and to make them visible. Direct Action on the thin border between the possible and the real.
Sometimes the value range just isn't the one to choose.

Supermarket giant Tesco has asked three more executives to leave their posts as the fall-out continues from its £250m profit guidance overstatement.
They take the number of suspended executives to eight.
Tesco said, "We have asked three employees to step aside to facilitate the investigation into the potential overstatement of profits in UK food.
"We will provide an update on the investigation with our interim results on 23 October."
Tesco shocked investors in September with the revelation that it may have overstated its profits by £250m.

Aim: Understand ways in which art communicates through a language of shades and tints that open language to nuance and descriptive meaning. Introduce Dewey’s concept of the “vital interest of medium” and the importance of allowing young students to choose media.

Giclée (/ʒiːˈkleɪ/ zhee-KLAY) is a neologism coined in 1991 by printmaker Jack Duganne for fine art digital prints made on inkjet printers. The name was originally applied to fine art prints created on a modified Iris printer in a process invented in the late 1980s. It has since been used loosely to mean any fine-art printing, usually archival, printed by inkjet. It is often used by artists, galleries, and print shops to suggest high quality printing, but is an unregulated word with no associated warranty of quality.
About color reproductions, I love them and have no qualms about hanging them in my home. I don't think I will ever own a original Dufy but I have a nice poster that makes me happy purchased sixty years ago for one dollar. My question here is value for product, the commercial side of fine art.
At Kennedy Galleries we did a good business in the sale of John Stobart limited edition color offset prints. Asked if the value would increase over time most of the sales staff would say something vague about the secondary market but few would guarantee a growth in value. The average price was five hundred for a hand signed print, forty years later the secondary market hovers around six hundred for many of his prints. Fair market value?

I finished up the value quilt top today! I am really loving it so far! I think I will straight line quilt it. Now that I'm comfortable with my walking foot, I want to play around with straight quilting a little!
Almost all my points match, which makes me quite happy because I did not take the time to trim down every HST block. It just takes too long!!
