German postcard by Krüger, no. 902/168. Photo: Ufa.

Film and TV actress Barbara Valentin (1940-2002) was dubbed the 'German Jayne Mansfield' and a 'Scandal Magnet'. Her résumé includes sex films but also art films directed by Rainer Werner Fassbinder. Her private life was fodder for the tabloids. Pop star Freddie Mercury was ‘the love of her life’.

Barbara Valentin was born Ursula ‘Uschi’ Ledersteger in Vienna. She was the daughter of the set designer Hans Ledersteger and actress Irmgard Alberti. Her film debut was in the erotic SF-thriller Ein Toter hing im Netz (1959, Fritz Böttgers). In the 1960’s she became a well known personality who was called ‘das Busenwunder’ because of her huge breasts. The German tabloids had plenty to write about her cocaine habit and other addictions, and also about her numerous love affairs. Her three marriages, including one with film director Helmut Dietl, ended all in a divorce. In the cinema she was seen in sex pot roles in films like Das Mädchen mit den Schmalen Hüften, literally The Girl with the Narrow Hips (1961, Johannes Kai), and In Frankfurt sind die Nächte heiss / Hot Nights in Frankfurt (1966, Rolf Olsen). Later she was also seen in international films like Carmen, Baby (1967, Radley Metzger) and King, Queen, Knave (1972, Jerzy Skolimowsky).

In the 1970’s Rainer Werner Fassbinder offered Barbara Valentin a chance on a new career. Under his direction she played in the futuristic tv tale Welt am Draht (1974) and after that she became a permanent member of his troupe. She played character parts in films and tv films by Fassbinder like the Henrik Ibsen adaptation Nora Helmer (1974), the touching melodrama Angst essen Seele auf (1974), Martha (1974), the Theodor Fontane adaptation Effi Briest (1974), the controversial gay drama Faustrecht der Freiheit / Fox and his Friends (1975), the box office hit Lili Marleen (1981) and Fassbinder's acclaimed 15-hour tv mini-series Berlin Alexanderplatz (1980). She also appeared in numerous other films and tv productions, including Bomber und Paganini (1976, Nicos Perakis), Flammende Herzen (1978, Walter Bockmayer, Rolf Bührmann) and Dorian Gray im Spiegel der Boulevardpresse (1984, Ulrike Ottinger). In 1984-1985, she lived together with Queen frontman, Freddie Mercury, whom she would come to call the love of her life. After his death in 1991 she supported the fight of Hiv organizations against Aids, and became an icon of the Munich gay scene. Her last film was Die Hunde sind schuld (2001, Andreas Prochaska). Barbara Valentin died in 2002. She suffered a brain hemorrhage early in 2001, and was in a coma for quite some time, and was later confined to a wheelchair. She is buried in the Ostfriedhof cemetery in Munich.

Leipzig, Old City Hall: Moses as support of the pulpit from the old St. John's Church, made by Valentin Silbermann, lime wood, coloured, 1586/87

Die Johanniskirche war der erste Leipziger Kirchenneubau nach der Reformation. Aus diesem Gebäude stammt die Kanzel. Sie überstand im Museum die Zerstörtung der Kirche im Zweiten Weltkrieg.

St. John's Church was the first new church built in Leipzig after the Reformation. The pulpit comes from this building. It survived the destruction of the church in the museum during the Second World War.

The Old Town Hall was built in its present form in 1556/57 by the then mayor, merchant and architect Hieronymus Lotter. But its origins go back much further, the oldest preserved component dates back to 1230. The Old Town Hall is a landmark of the city. The Renaissance building with its tower, which has been altered in the Baroque style, dominates the Market Square. From the remains of old prison cells in the cellar to the historical rooms on the main floor to the tower sphere and weather vane, the building is, as it were, a compendium of Leipzig's city history and thus the most valuable museum object itself. The permanent exhibition of the Museum of City History invites visitors on a tour through Leipzig's eventful history. During the Second World War, the roof truss and the second upper floor burnt out. The historic rooms on the first floor remained intact. When the town hall was rebuilt in 1909, an iron-reinforced concrete ceiling was inserted between the two upper floors. This proved to be a fire protection, so that the valuable historical rooms, especially the banqueting hall and council chamber, have been preserved.

Vintage French postcard. Édition Pathé Frères, 1910s. Photo Oreste Castagneri. M.lle Frascaroli.

Valentina Frascaroli (1890-1955) was an Italian actress of the silent screen. After training in dance and acting, she performed on stage. In 1909 she was hired by Itala Film, first as a screenwriter, then an actress. At Itala, she became the beloved companion of former Pathé comedian André Deed, known in Italy as Cretinetti and in France as Gribouille. She followed him to France when he returned to Pathé, now as Boireau. Frascaroli also had her own comedies there as the character Griboulette. Between 1915 and 1922 she acted in many, mostly dramatic Italian films such as Maciste alpino (1916), Tigre reale (1916), La guerra e il sogno di Momi (1917), etc. - mostly at Itala Film. Already in the early 1910s she had acted opposite Ermet Zacconi in Padre (1912) and would be paired with him again in L'emigrante (1915). Frascaroli retired form the screen in 1925 but continued on stage.

On the occasion of the 2015 retrospective on silent actress Valentina Frascaroli, at the Cinema Ritrovato festival In Bologna, curator Mariann Lewinsky wrote in the festival catalog: "Valentina Frascaroli (1890-1955) was signed up by Itala in 1909 and subsequently appears in numerous comic scenes by Cretinetti. If he is a ‘maschera’, a character type, she is too: an effervescent, affable Columbine of the cinema, cunning and catty, wise, clever, and coquettish. But she was better than him and more versatile, and she had a dual career, not only as a comic actress alongside Deed, and alone in the Gribouillette series produced by Pathé, but also as a jeune ingénue in dramatic titles such Sacrificata! (1910), a very early and remarkable film which has miraculously survived.

Leafing through period publications we can gather that Frascaroli was a much-loved and appreciated actress. Little remains of her filmography (over 100 titles) but the meagre residue is noteworthy: a fragment of L’emigrante (Febo Mari, 1915), an incomplete copy of an Italian Jane Eyre, Le memorie di una istitutrice (1917), and above all Il delitto della piccina, a political film of 1920, given the thumbs down by the censors, probably never distributed and maybe for that reason rediscovered in its entirety in a period nitrate copy.

Single cut-out frames allow us to fill in the lost Italian conclusion of Tigre reale (1916), in which Frascaroli plays an important role, whereas this is almost invisible in the version (made for export) we have of this diva film. Sadly the same is true of the dark science-fiction mini-series Mado, conceived and shot by André Deed: a lost opening, a third section that was never shot, and a fragment of the central part with only occasional moments showing Valentina in the role of the evil Countess Mado. I would so love to rediscover Il documento umano (1920), the first episode of the trilogy, and the missing parts from the second, L’uomo meccanico (1921), a nightmare engendered by the first mechanical war."
