Alto Paraíso - Goiás

Am I flying high?

I headed with the tour group for a jeep tour through the desert. It turns out, however, that the definition of "jeep" varies from culture to culture. We were being taken out in rickety old pickup trucks outfitted with benches.

According to local guides, Valley de Luna received its name after Neil Armstrong apparently visited the site and remarked how the landscape resembled that of the moon. The jury’s still out as to whether this is fact or fiction!

Next to “Lawrence’s Well” are some inscriptions from the Thamudic tribes. In the Wadi Rum area, there are thousands of drawings and inscriptions from these people who lived here in the first centuries AD. Thamudic drawings include depictions of humans, large feet, ibex, camels, and hunters.

It is also famous for its unique collection of petroglyphs and inscriptions. Where ever you go, where ever you look, if you look closely you will find petroglyphs and inscriptions everywhere in our desert. In this blog we will tell you more about them.

Ever since prehistoric times many humans of different cultures inhabited Wadi Rum desert. Their petroglyphs and inscriptions can be found all around in our desert. Petroglyphs are images created by removing part of a rock surfaces by incising, pecking, carving and abrading with something like a stone chisel. Inscriptions are characters. These are created in the same way as petroglyphs. Most petroglyphs and inscriptions in our desert were made on cliff faces, big rocks and boulders.

The petroglyphs and inscriptions illustrate the 12.000 years of human occupation in Wadi Rum desert. They tell us stories about the history and evolution of human activity in the Arabian Peninsula. With 25,000 petroglyphs and 20,000 inscriptions, mostly Thamudic, Wadi Rum desert is a truly unique place on earth. This was one of the reasons for UNESCO to put our desert on the World Heritage List.

The petroglyphs are drawings of humans and animals. They show human figures holding bows and arrows. Other figures are the ones of animals like camel, ibex and horse. And alongside these figures are symbols like lines and circles. They are thought to be instructions and message left by the people for one another. They are believed to be about showing hidden springs. And about updating each other on things like who visited the area last. All together these engravings give an insight on the development of human thought. They show pattern of pastoral, agricultural and urban human activity. And they tell us more about the climatically change. From the mildly humid climate to the semi-arid climate we have today.

The numerous inscriptions found in Wadi Rum desert are made in four different North-Arabian scripts. Thamudic, Nabatean, Islamic an Arabic. They show the very early development of alphabetical writing among the societies in the peninsula. According to UNESCO Wadi Rum desert is ‘a critical site for the study and understanding of the evolution of aesthetics, writing and literacy’.

Quran 89: 7-8: ‘7 Iram – who had lofty pillars. 8 The likes of whom had never been created in the land?’. Thanks to numerous inscriptions in various alphabets desert scholars were able to identify Wadi Rum with ancient Iram. The Quran tells about Iram being buried under the sands of the desert. As an example of divine punishment over people who refused to worship Allah.

The Thamud who lived in Wadi Rum desert from around 800 BC are said to be the ones annihilated by Allah. The engravings they left behind give an essential insight into their tribe’s history.

All our tours are put together to show you our beautiful homeland. We not only admire the high cliffs, the extraordinary columns and niches, and shaped rocks and arches. We also enjoy the wide red and yellow desert valleys. And of course we pay a lot of attention to our cultural heritage. In place like Khazali canyon, Lawrence spring (Ain Abu Aineh), Ain Shalaaleh, Anfishiyyeh and Rakhabat canyon we show you the petroglyphs and inscriptions. Some of the engravings are in perfect condition. Others got badly damaged over time. But overall you can enjoy seeing a lot of them up close.

How many face perfils?

National Geographic describes the formations as the "result of primordial tectonic movement that cleaved the bedrock with almost cubic perfection before raising it high above the desert floor."

About 10km down the canyon of the Río Choqueyapu from the city center, Valle de la Luna is a slightly over-hyped place, though it’s a pleasant break from urban La Paz. It could be easily visited in a morning or combined with another outing such as a hike to Muela del Diablo to fill an entire day. It isn’t a valley at all, but a bizarre, eroded hillside maze of canyons and pinnacles technically known as badlands.

Several species of cactus grow here, including the hallucinogenic choma (San Pedro cactus). Oh, YEP.

Unfortunately, urban growth has caught up to the area, making it less of a viewpoint than it otherwise might be.

An easy siq to explore is the narrow fissure that cuts into Jebel Khazali. You can explore on foot for about 150m, far enough to appreciate the cool shade and to see inscriptions made by the ancients who used the siq for the same purpose. Look out for drawings of ostriches, pairs of feet and a woman giving birth. You need ropes and a guide to penetrate further and 4WD transport to reach the siq.

Mount rise is about 1.650 meters above sea level and divides the mountain from the north dividing the rock called Canyon and found some Nabatiyah and the Arab and Islamic drawings and writings, which date back thousands of years.

It is one of the famous places in Wadi rum desert, the deep narrow fissure in the mountain side contains many NABATEAN, Greek, and Talmudic inscriptions. You can also see many different colour of sand there

Atacama Desert

Desierto de Atacama

Chile.

A road trip from the South region of Brazil to San Pedro de Atacama in Chile.

He was my private Bedouin and guide that day.

He is a very cool guy.

If you've been to the Sahara or the Atacama and you think you've seen enough deserts for an incarnation, let's just give one reason that makes Wadi Rum one of the must do things in Jordan: it's ALL red. Located at, the Wadi Rum is a desert of 720 km² all formed by sand and mountains of red granite and aretino. Some of the rock formations reach 1,700 meters high. Others, keep petroglyphs and inscriptions millennial left by the many people who inhabited the region. One of them is still there: the Bedouin, also known as the people of the desert.

They are the cooperatives that promote the walks in the area, which is of preservation. There are numerous options for exploring Wadi Rum, the most popular and comfortable being the 4X4 Jeep Tour. There are nine different packages that travelers can choose from when they arrive at the visitor's center of the reservation, which can last from two hours to the whole day or more, including an overnight stay at a Bedouin camp. There are Bedouins who receive tourists in their real homes and also places that are true desert hotels with almost all the comforts of a common establishment. The stay can be arranged by your guide / agency or in the visitor center itself.

It is also possible to hire camel or horse tours and do some hiking trails. Whichever tour you choose, make sure that it goes through the amazing formation of the Rock Bridge - and that includes the spectacle of the sunset, when everything that is already red becomes even more red. Wadi Rum is located 60km north of the popular resort of Aqaba, a three and a half hour drive from Amman and an hour and a half from Petra.

Altitude Sickness is on.

Notice my voice and the time to think the words in Portuguese. I couldn't remember the name of Neil Armstrong.

It is the second day.

SAND DUNES (RED AND WHITE)

There аre various places іn Wadi Rum where the white аnd red sands meet, but the mоst commonly visited іs а dune sloping up alongside а jebel - а bit tough tо climb up, great fun tо run down! Іt cаn be difficult ascending those - use small steps.

Have you ever thought of riding on the moon?!

this is the feeling I had when I photographed this rider. His dream must have been that, for sure! The scenario is identical to the moon ... must be fantastic!

The wind, the heartache, time and desert sand form continually changing landscapes that never cease to revolverem in beautiful shapes. There is nothing there, not a plant or an insect, unless you and different types of sand, salt, gypsum and ground. Although the heat, the Valley of the Moon is a place of peace, calm and quiet.

It is a beautiful region.

Due to total lack of rain, the visibility is exceptional and the Atacama region is considered the best place on the planet for astronomical research.

Wadi Rum desert’s 3 main types of vegetation.

Sand dune vegetation:

Over sixty percent of Wadi Rum desert is covered with this type of vegetation. It consists mainly of shrubs and bushes. The main species include the Haloxylon persicum (White Saxaul), the Retama raetam (White Broom), the Calligonum comosum (Arta) and the Neurada procumbens (Saadan).

Anabasis articulate (Jointed Anabis):

The Jointed Anabis White Broom is palatable for their animals. They use this plant for washing purposes as it has the ability to foam and clean. And dead plants are useful as fire wood.

Our guide enjoys sunset from the Um Sabbatah area which is the best are to see sunset from.

As sunset began to descend, winds picked up the fine sand that blankets the desert. The desert turned to an ethereal purple red. It looked like one of the sandstorms that Matt Damon's character survives in "The Martian."

One of several spots on the 4WD tour route from which to enjoy the spectacular colours of sunset across the sands of Wadi Rum.

The desert of Wadi Rum boasts one of the most spectacular desert landscapes in the world with rolling sand dunes & vast mountains of sandstone. Its red sand made it the perfect backdrop for filming The Martian and it will surely captivate you, as it has so many visitors before.

Experience Mars, like Matt Damon in his film The Martian. Filmed in Wadi Rum my two day Wadi Rum experience gave me a sense of isolation the enormity of the landscape both in Wadi Rum and on Mars.

The Martian is not the only film to use Rum as a location and other Hollywood Blockbusters include, Lawrence of Arabia, Mission to Mars, Red Planet and Transformers.

Valley of the Moon (Moon Valley)

Chapada dos Veadeiros - GO

Brazil

Valle de la Luna (Moon Valley) is situated about 10 kilometers from downtown La Paz, in the Pedro Domingo Murillo Province, La Paz Department, Bolivia. It consists of an area where erosion has worn away the majority of a mountain, composed primarily of clay rather than rock, leaving tall spires. It is similar to another zone of La Paz that is known as El Valle de las Animas (The Valley of the Souls). It is an important site of the famous holiday, Dias de los Muertos (Day of the Dead).

Because the mineral content of the mountains varies greatly between individual mountains, the sides of the mountains are different colors, creating striking optical illusions. A majority of them are a clear beige or light brown color, but some are almost red, with sections of dark violet.

The following morning I woke up at 5:45 to catch the sunrise. With only a 10-minute walk to the viewing point, I had no excuses to miss it.
