El Valle de la Luna (the Valley of the Moon) is located 13 kilometres (8 mi) west of San Pedro de Atacama, to the north of Chile in the Cordillera de la Sal, in the Atacama desert.
It has various stone and sand formations which have been carved by wind and water. It has an impressive range of color and texture, looking somewhat similar to the surface of the moon. There are also dry lakes where the composition of salt makes a white covering layer of the area. It presents diverse saline outcrops which appear like man-made sculptures.
There are also a great variety of caverns. When the sun sinks, it is painting pie tones the edges of hills and defiles, while the wind blows among the rocks and the sky passes from pink color to purple and finally black.
Valle de la Luna is a part of the Reserva Nacional los Flamencos and was declared a Nature Sanctuary in 1982 for its natural environment and strange lunar landscape, from which its name is derived.
The Atacama desert is also considered one of the driest places on earth, as some areas have not received a single drop of rain in hundreds of years. A prototype for a Mars rover was tested there by scientists because of the valley's dry and forbidding terrains.

The Amphitheater and the Great Dune (Gran Duna), located in the Moon Valley (Valle de la Luna) near San Pedro de Atacama, Chile, are interesting for a number of reasons:
Otherworldly Landscape: The Atacama Desert is one of the driest non-polar deserts in the world, and the Moon Valley is a particularly dramatic part of it. Wind erosion has sculpted the valley into strange and beautiful formations, with towering sand dunes, deep canyons, and colorful rock strata. The Amphitheater, a massive concave wall, and the Gran Duna, a towering dune reaching over 1,100 feet (340 meters) tall, are some of the most impressive sights in the valley.
Unique geological formations: The Amphitheater and the Gran Duna are formed from layers of sediment that have been compressed and uplifted over millions of years. The erosion has exposed these layers, creating a banded effect that is particularly striking in the Amphitheater. The wind has also sculpted the dunes into constantly changing shapes, making each visit to the Moon Valley unique.
Stargazing: Due to its high altitude, dry climate, and lack of light pollution, the Atacama Desert is one of the best places in the world for stargazing. The Moon Valley is a particularly good spot, as there are no trees or other obstructions to block the view of the night sky.
Activities: Visitors can hike to the top of the Gran Duna for stunning views of the surrounding desert. They can also explore the Amphitheater on foot, or take a sandboarding or sandboarding tour down the slopes of the dunes.
If you're looking for a place to experience a truly otherworldly landscape, the Moon Valley, the Amphitheater, and the Gran Duna are definitely worth a visit.

The reddish hue of the sand combined with the massive granite rock faces and sandstone mesas makes for an otherworldly landscape.
While there are dunes in several places around Wadi Rum, the most striking are the red sands that bank up against Jebel Umm Ulaydiyya. If you are on a 4WD or camel tour, drivers will stop near a pristine slope for you to plod your way to the crest of the dune. They're particularly lovely at sunset.

Also, the view from the little mountain behind the house is very beautiful and far reaching. They would have seen people coming from a long way off.
The area is centered on the main valley of Wadi Rum. The highest elevation in Jordan is Jabal Umm ad Dami at 1,840 m (6,040 ft) high (SRTM data states 1854 m), located 30 kilometres south of Wadi Rum village. It was first located by Difallah Ateeg, a Zalabia Bedouin from Rum. On a clear day, it is possible to see the Red Sea and the Saudi border from the top.
Jabal Ram or Jebel Rum (1,734 metres (5,689 ft) above sea level) is the second highest peak in Jordan and the highest peak in the central Rum, rising directly above Rum valley, opposite Jebel um Ishrin, which is possibly one metre lower.
Khaz'ali Canyon in Wadi Rum is the site of petroglyphs etched into the cave walls depicting humans and antelopes dating back to the Thamudic times. The village of Wadi Rum itself consists of several hundred Bedouin inhabitants with their goat-hair tents and concrete houses and also their four-wheel vehicles, one school for boys and one for girls, a few shops, and the headquarters of the Desert Patrol.
Recently, Geoff Lawton has achieved success in establishing a permaculture ecosystem in Wadi Rum.
About 10km down the canyon of the Río Choqueyapu from the city center, Valle de la Luna is a slightly over-hyped place, though it’s a pleasant break from urban La Paz. It could be easily visited in a morning or combined with another outing such as a hike to Muela del Diablo to fill an entire day. It isn’t a valley at all, but a bizarre, eroded hillside maze of canyons and pinnacles technically known as badlands.
Several species of cactus grow here, including the hallucinogenic choma (San Pedro cactus). Oh, YEP.
Unfortunately, urban growth has caught up to the area, making it less of a viewpoint than it otherwise might be.
Inti Travel offers round-trip guided trips to Valle de la Luna and Chacaltaya (US$ 42), with a pickup from Iglesia Maria Auxiliadora at 8:30am.
Wadi Rum, known also as the Valley of the Moon, is a valley cut into the sandstone and granite rock in southern Jordan 60 km (37 mi) to the east of Aqaba; it is the largest wadi in Jordan.
Wadi Rum Protected Area was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2011.
Wadi Rum most likely gets it name from the early name of Iram of the Pillars. Iram of the Pillars or the "City of the pillars", is a lost city, region or tribe mentioned in the Quran.
Valley of the Moon

Wadi Rum transforms into a photographer's paradise at sunset. The dramatic desert landscape explodes with color as the sun dips below the horizon. It's the perfect place to escape the daily grind and capture breathtaking views.

It's not just the color of the sand but also the craggy structure of the rocks and hills that makes Wadi Rum look like another planet. Many of the mesas are older than the Dead Sea between Jordan and Israel.
But the view was stunning. It was immediately apparent why some Jordanians call Wadi Rum "The Valley of the Moon."
The landscape certainly looked lunar or Mars-like.

National Geographic describes the formations as the "result of primordial tectonic movement that cleaved the bedrock with almost cubic perfection before raising it high above the desert floor."

Red sand dune.
Wadi Rum desert is dotted with sand dunes. Both yellow and red.Red sand dune in Wadi Rum desert The highest dune can be found in Wadi Um Ishrin. But I prefer to visit the one near Khazali canyon. For two reasons. This dune is easy to climb via the rocks. This will leave you with plenty of energy to enjoy the beautiful valley views. And to run down the dune. For the base of the dune you can take pictures for the intense red of the dune and the deep blue of the sky above. Or you can make a picture for the red sand dune and Jabal Rum and Jabal Um Ishrin. One of our favourites. The best time to take pictures here is during the morning. I was in the afternoon and morning.
We waited for the sunset at the Coyote stone. After an incredible scenic sunset, we begin the trip back to your Hotel in San Pedro de Atacama.

Valle de la Luna (Moon Valley) is situated about 10 kilometers from downtown La Paz, in the Pedro Domingo Murillo Province, La Paz Department, Bolivia. It consists of an area where erosion has worn away the majority of a mountain, composed primarily of clay rather than rock, leaving tall spires. It is similar to another zone of La Paz that is known as El Valle de las Animas (The Valley of the Souls). It is an important site of the famous holiday, Dias de los Muertos (Day of the Dead).
Because the mineral content of the mountains varies greatly between individual mountains, the sides of the mountains are different colors, creating striking optical illusions. A majority of them are a clear beige or light brown color, but some are almost red, with sections of dark violet.
We would have liked to have gone on Star Observation at the best and largest international NASA observatory in the world, but it is not only open with Full Moon.
When we arrived in San Pedro de Atacama, it was to be our first night tour, days before the full moon, it was closed because of the lightning storms. The astronomical observatory (Cerro Paranal - ALMA) was opened on the penultimate night before the Full Moon.
We were on a tour away from the city and there are only vacancies for 24 people or a little more. On the last night before Full Moon, our last night, there were spots for us, but you're warned that the moon is already 65% bright and that we could only see the moon well.
We had already seen Milk Way, six days earlier at 2:30 a.m. in Uyuni, Bolivia, so we gave up on this tour.
Plan to be in Chile away from the Full Moon, the smaller the moonlight, the better for distant galaxies.

Named in honour of Lawrence’s book, this large rock formation, with seven fluted turrets, is easy to see from the road near the Wadi Rum visitor centre. If you fancy a closer look, a rewarding hike circumnavigates the mountain via Makharas Canyon.
Wadi Rum, a desert valley in Jordan, has played the part of Mars and distant planets in countless movies, including "The Martian," "Star Wars: Rogue One," "Prometheus," and Red Planet."

Take some time off from the hustle and bustle of the city and visit Muela del Diablo, a distinct rock formation formed by an extinct volcano plug. Translated as the ‘Devil’s Molar’ in English, the formation was named due to its peculiar shape when viewed from certain vantage points. You can walk to the attraction in no more than half a day, regardless of your trekking experience. Enjoy the rewards of your efforts with awe-inspiring views of La Paz and the surrounding valleys. A visit to Muela del Diablo represents just the start of the adventure when you use our La Paz sightseeing website to plot your vacation.

The Moon Valley is a desert spot and tourist attraction, located in the Atacama Desert, 13 km west of San Pedro de Atacama and 110 km SE of Calama, belonging to the Antofagasta region. In 1982 it was declared a sanctuary of nature and is part of the Los Flamencos national reserve, its entrance is managed by Conaf and is accessible from San Pedro de Atacama.
Together with the so-called Death Valley, this place is unique within the environment that surrounds the Sierra Orbate at 2500 meters above sea level, it is a depression of relative size of 440 km² of the so-called Cordillera de la Sal in the Atacama salt flat surrounded by 500 m elevation peaks. Its extension covers from the west by the Domeyko mountain range, by the east by Toconao and Peine by the south.
