I was privileged to meet Johnson Beharry VC. I have never met a Victoria Cross holder before, he is the first VC recipient for over 30 years.
While serving in Afghanistan, he was leading a convoy that came under heavy fire, but he continued driving his heavily damaged warrior (an armoured personnel carrier) to get his wounded crew and the following convoy to safety. Because the warrior was damaged he had to open the hatch to see where he was going and exposed himself to intense incoming fire. The SECOND time he did this in another warrior on another op the convoy was again heavily ambushed, this time he received a head wound that resulted in 40% of his brain being removed - but he kept going.....
He later severed a finger while rehersing for ITV's Dancing on Ice. But that's another story.
Citation extract: "Beharry displayed repeated extreme gallantry and unquestioned valour, despite intense direct attacks, personal injury and damage to his vehicle in the face of relentless enemy action."
Top man.
