The AEC Model 850, also known as the 'FWD R6T' was available in two versions, as an Artillery Tractor and a Recovery Vehicle both used by the British Army, it was in production from 1929 to 1936 and 57 units and one prototype was produced. In 1928 several truck manufacturers were asked by the British Army to develop a Six-Wheel Drive Artillery Tractor. In addition to English companies such as Guy Motors, Leyland and Scammell, the American company FWD (Four Wheel Drive Lorry Company) with a branch in Slough, was also invited. The vehicles had to be able to carry a trailer load of approximately 6 tons.
FWD came up with the R6T, which was the manufacturer's first Six- Wheel Drive Vehicle, it was equipped with a Dorman JUL six-cylinder petrol engine with side valves, a 6.6 litre engine producing 78hp. All wheels were driven via a four-speed gearbox and an additional reduction gearbox allowing them to operate in high and low ranges could be used (4F1Rx2) In 1929 the prototype was delivered to the British Army for testing. At the end of that year, the vehicle came back to the factory. FWD was given an order for nine vehicles, but some changes were necessary. In 1929 FWD and AEC entered into a partnership, components were replaced with AEC equipment. The engine was replaced by an AEC A136 with overhead valves, which had a smaller displacement of 6.1 litres, but with 95hp it had more power. The gearbox was also exchanged for a version of AEC. Adjustments to the driver's cab and superstructure were also made, the most notable being the position of two Crew members next to the engine slightly ahead of the Driver. The cabin and cargo hold were open, but could be covered with a canvas roof.
In 1932 the English branch of FWD was taken over by AEC, the type designation of the vehicles changed from R6T to AEC Model 850. A total of 24 units were built at FWD in Slough and 33 units at the AEC factory in Southall between 1932 and 1936, a total production of 57 units. At the outbreak of World War Two, a number of vehicles were sent to France between 1939-1940 with the British Expeditionary Force (BEF). Many of them were left behind during the evacuation of the BEF in May 1940. The only surviving example is this one at the Imperial War Museum in Duxford, which was fully restored in 1970.

The American General Purpose 4x4 vehicle, (nicknamed “Jeep” either due to the “GP” initials or after a character “Eugene the Jeep" in the Popeye cartoons) became a familiar sight amongst all allied units. Used for a variety of purposes it was heavily modified when adapted for a wide variety of roles for Airborne use. The Jeeps were used to tow 6pdr Anti-Tank Guns, to provide a reconnaissance role, signals vehicle and to provide transport for the wounded, amongst others.
The changes were necessitated by operational needs and experience. The main modifications were in order to fit the Jeep into the Horsa Glider for transportation, changes included:
▪︎Cutting down the front bumper, footsteps and grab handles removed to allow fitting into the Horsa Glider.
▪︎Stowage of the spare wheel in front of the radiator grill to prevent shrapnel damage in the Reconnaissance version, this in turn, unfortunately caused over heating.
▪︎Addition of a pintle mounted single or twin Vickers K Machine Gun for the front passenger in the reconnaissance role.
▪︎Stowage of the rear jerry can in between the front seats, with two more added behind the seats to enable loading in a Horsa Glider.
▪︎Fitting of a 22 wireless set over the rear drivers side wheel arch and additional battery holders and reels for the signals variant.
▪︎Attachment points for stretchers for the medical version.
▪︎Removal of the windscreen.
▪︎Addition of a removable steering wheel with the horn being moved to the dashboard.
▪︎Entrenching tools removed from the sides, to allow for easy loading and unloading, with the tools relocated to the bumper.
▪︎Black-out driving light on the left front mudguard removed and the lights in the grill were replaced with smaller versions mounted on the mudguards, both main headlights were generally replaced by a single British blackout headlight.
The Airborne Jeeps were heavily used from Normandy through to the Rhine Crossing and were heavily committed during Operation Market Garden at Arnhem. Post war they continued in service until the late 1950's, seeing action in many locations such as Palestine and Suez, having been adapted to be parachute deployable from beneath the wings of the Hastings aircraft.

Redesigned in 2018 from the ground up, one of the latest Jeep Wranglers for 2021 is a plug-in electric variant dubbed the 4xe to bring the American icon up-to-speed with green energy expectations. As the proud owner of three prior Wranglers, and my current 2016 Unlimited, I enjoy the “spirit of adventure” Wranglers offer and the unequivocal go-anywhere and self-assurance they present. And now, I can partake in Jeep group activities with more planetary consciousness.

The Bedford M Series General Utility Truck was a further development of the previous RL Series, dated back to the early 1950's, the M series was developed in the early 1960's to meet the British Army requirement. It was a Militarized version of commercial truck. Some 50,000 Bedfords have been manufactured for Military Service. These trucks were widely used by the British Army, who was the large customer. The M series trucks proved to be robust and reliable vehicles. In the British Army it was known simply as 4-tonner. Many of these Military Trucks have been exported to Bangladesh, Belgium, Brunei, Denmark, Indonesia, Ireland, Kenya, Netherlands, Turkey United Arab Emirates and other countries. Since 1987 production of this truck was taken over by AWD, and trucks were branded as 'AWD-Bedford'. Production of this British Military Truck continued until the 1989, i the same year the Leyland DAF T224 was selected by the British Army as the M series replacement. Production of the M series continued until 1992 when the AWD Company was taken over by Marshall.
The Bedford M series has a payload capacity of 3.94 tons, even though a maximum load of over 5.9 tons is possible. It is a true ''Multi-Purpose'' Truck, used for all manner of Military duties. The cargo area has drop-sides and tailgate, which can be removed for stowage of containers. For Personnel transportation detachable seats are fitted in the center of the cargo area, and can carry 20 fully equipped Troops. The canvas cover and bows were often removed. A hydraulic crane was fitted to some models in the cargo area for loading and unloading operations. This Military Truck can also tow trailers or Artillery Pieces. A forward control cab is of all-steel construction, there is a hatch in the roof, used to mount a Machine Gun or for observation. Late production trucks can be recognized by the platform over the cab, which can be made Mineproof, though this requires detailed work, carried out by a specialist firm.
The initial production models were known as the MK, powered by a Bedford 5.4-liter multi-fuel engine, developing 98hp, in 1981 a more powerful diesel engine, developing 103hp, was introduced, which resulted in the MJ series. This military truck has selectable all wheel drive, some vehicles were also fitted with a 4.9 ton capacity winch. The Bedford M series comes in a number of variants, including Dump Truck, Refueller, Roadway Laying Vehicle, Recovery Vehicle, Light Reconnaissance Drone Carrier, Signals Vehicle, Artillery Control Center, Bridging Truck and so on. Many automotive components of the Bedford M series truck were used on the Saxon Armored Personnel Carrier, which is basically an 'Armoured Truck', capable of operating in forward areas. Production of the Bedford MJ series trucks ceased in favor to the Bedford MT series.
