I was lazing around the house upon a couch today when I was suddenly hit with an urge to be spontaneous. I glanced out the window to see the pouring rain and clouds encompassing everything in sight (as it has been for the past 3 weeks now), and decided in that moment that I was going to be a storm chaser. Except that it wasn't storming. It was just raining... a lot... But the point is, the clouds looked interesting and I wanted to chase them down as fast as possible before they turned into one giant boring gray single blob of a sky again. So my sister and my dogs and I hopped into the car and speeded down the country roads as I yelled "CHASE THE MOUNTAINS, FOLLOW THE CLOUDS!" until, half an hour later, we arrived here, at what we thought was the most perfect, beautiful, quiet secluded location. Until we noticed all the camouflaged men in the bushes with guns. I guess it's hunting season. I must say, I felt rather epic running around with my camera in the pouring rain and shooting (pictures) in time with the gunshots all around. It was really quite an inspiring rush of adrenaline. But alas, what started out as an epic adventure turned out to be rather miserable when I realized how wet and cold I was. So, we drove home.

I had a sudden urge to collect rock samples and post them to NASA while visiting here. The edge of Australia's Simpson desert not only has red sand but vast "Gibber" rock plains. This spot is just a 4 hour drive, on a rough 4WD track, from the outback capital of Alice Springs.

Today I have the most overwhelming urge to thrift
to rummage
and smell the waft of oldness
and dusty treasures.
Alas I have a day of computer work
and admin planned
but the weekend brings
thrifting a plenty
and I cannot wait to say hello to Saturday morning ..... bright and early !

That urge to see whats around the corner led to this unexpected scene and several minutes of just staring to take it all in. When I finally raised my camera, the woman in the center right walked a bit closer, waved her arms, and shouted something. I couldn't hear over the roar of the water, waved, and followed the trail around to the top of that waterfall. When I got closer, she walked over again and I expected some objection about including them in my frame. Instead, she proceeded to ask if I wanted them out of the way so I could compose a shot without people. I was pleasantly surprised but her family was having so much fun up there, I did not want to intrude. Having people in the image does give a sense of perspective and we wound up spending a fair bit of time chatting about other places to visit - all of which, was much appreciated.
Everything started from this photo that I used as my reference. I watched two horror movies whilst painting this and finished at 6 a.m. It was such a blast to paint at night.
The title comes from The Knive's song 'Bird' . I think it's uncommonly beautiful song.
"If I was a bird
I would count my time in pearls
Under my wings you'll find shelter
You'll breed bugs and keep me well fed
And I proclaim the reason why I'll have to fly
But you wanted me to be a girl
Without feathers without urge
Then my wings quick dissappeared
And left was only fear
And I proclaim the reason why I'll have to fly..."
Watercolours and a touch of gouache (especially on the face).
It seems so long since I was out painting with the lads, so long that I dont even recognise how this Flickr upload worx.

William looks at this every day. He really has a desire to climb it, but, he had several friends who were electrocuted doing it and he just hasn't worked up the courage to climb it yet. Maybe tomorrow. Besides, it doesn't look like it has any nuts to harvest anyway. Squirrels don't like climbing unless there is the promise of nuts!
