The dark-eyed junco (Junco hyemalis) is a species of the juncos, a genus of small grayish American sparrows. This bird is common across much of temperate North America and in summer ranges far into the Arctic. It is a very variable species, much like the related fox sparrow (Passerella iliaca), and its systematics are still not completely untangled.

Adults generally have gray heads, necks, and breasts, gray or brown backs and wings, and a white belly, but show a confusing amount of variation in plumage details. The white outer tail feathers flash distinctively in flight and while hopping on the ground. The bill is usually pale pinkish.

Males tend to have darker, more conspicuous markings than the females. The dark-eyed junco is 13 to 17.5 cm (5.1 to 6.9 in) long and has a wingspan of 18 to 25 cm (7.1 to 9.8 in). Body mass can vary from 18 to 30 g (0.63 to 1.06 oz). Among standard measurements, the wing cord is 6.6 to 9.3 cm (2.6 to 3.7 in), the tail is 6.1 to 7.3 cm (2.4 to 2.9 in), the bill is 0.9 to 1.3 cm (0.35 to 0.51 in) and the tarsus is 1.9 to 2.3 cm (0.75 to 0.91 in). Juveniles often have pale streaks and may even be mistaken for vesper sparrows (Pooecetes gramineus) until they acquire adult plumage at 2 to 3 months. But junco fledglings' heads are generally quite uniform in color already, and initially their bills still have conspicuous yellowish edges to the gape, remains of the fleshy wattles that guide the parents when they feed the nestlings.

Untangling webs

Excerpt from www.bwst.ca/the-artists/tessera:

Title: Untangling

Material: Recuperated metal

Quintin Teszeri is an artist and teacher whose work interweaves everyday insignificance and total uniqueness. With graduate degrees in art history, studio art, and teaching, his practice exists in a variety of forms. These have been presented by Nuit Blanche Toronto, Blackwood Gallery, Printed Matter Inc., and NoRoutine Books.

Artist Statement:

Untangling is made of recuperated metal from obsolete bag signs found in Burlington — the upside-down U’s wrapped in plastic advertising that visually and environmentally litter roadsides. The loosening knot features five continuous loops that never touch. It’s a material exercise in imagining more sustainable and meaningfully interconnected aesthetics.

"...but things are so complicated and tangled together. I can't seem to seperate them out and do one thing at a time. I don't know how to untangle things."

"Start by thinking about the simplest things and go from there. You're are not in a hurry to decide anything. It may be tough but sometimes you've got to just stop and take time. You ought to train yourself to look at things until something becomes clear."

Cyans World

Pick up where Myst left off, and plunge into a deceptively beautiful world cursed by bewildering defects and a powerful overseer. Every shadow hides a secret, and appearances might not be what they seem. Atrus needs you once again – to untangle the truth about Riven and help him free his beloved wife Catherine. You must search, explore, and draw on your intellect and intuition to discover the truth about this troubled land and its inhabitants.

She said whatever I want for an hour, only $50. I'm having her untangle Christmas lights and decorate the tree. Work Smarter, Not Harder.

To avoid the hassle of managing/untangling curls -- they were beginning to unravel -- I straightened her hair and cut off about an inch off it, as the ends were frizzy.

I'm keeping her hair in braids so I wouldn't need to fix it, at least not until her new wig gets here!

“O time, thou must untangle this, not I.

It is too hard a knot for me t'untie.”

There are five subspecies of Junco, but the one that lives here is in my opinion the most striking of them all, the Oregon Junco. With its deep chestnut back, black head, and ringed eyes, it is the standout perhaps of all sparrows. Both sexes also have two white tail feathers that they "flash" but not just in breeding season. No one is sure about their purpose. I just think its for show especially during mating season (now) when males are flicking those feathers in display.

The Oregon Junco is the preferred name for the western subspecies that taxonomists called "The Black-Eyed Junco." This bird is common across much of temperate North America and in summer ranges far into the Arctic. It is a very variable species, much like the related fox sparrow (Passerella iliaca), and its systematics are still not completely untangled.

This was to be one of my portraits from the street but, as you can see, it got a bit complicated. The Pearly Queen was standing there with her little pearly dog and smiling for the camera. But before I had time to click another dog came along and her dog quickly turned, went through her legs and sat behind her, with his lead pulling her down. Luckily the other dog stood still otherwise this picture would be very different. The story ended, as all the good old stories do, when the guy behind helped the distressed damsel untangle herself from the lead and the dog!

The fisherman had just brought up a crab which he discarded after he untangled it. A source of wonder for the kids! :)

Yin has a fearsome reputation as a hunter and to date he's bought me pigeons, a rabbit, mice and shrews (with and without heads) and on one occasion a Magpie at 4am that had managed to escape only to get caught up in the window blinds, which I had to hold while my son carefully untangled it.

On Friday I heard a loud shriek and felt a sharp sting to my left leg as I walked downstairs and to my horror realised that I'd stepped on a rat!

Set in the middle of the Shropshire Hills, alongside the Long Mynd, Carding Mill Valley is just up the road from the delightful small town of Church Stretton.

Historically the town was known for its textiles, using the abundant local wool, and a notable location for this industry was Carding Mill Valley. The carding mill there was built in the 18th century, and named after a stage in making cloth, the three stages being carding, spinning and weaving. Carding would have been done by children, and involved using a hand-card that removed and untangled short fibres from the mass of raw material. The cards were wooden blocks with handles and covered in metal spikes, which were angled (to make it easier to untangle) and set in leather. When untangled, the material would be spun, and then woven into the final product.

The carding mill closed and was demolished at the beginning of the 20th century, though the adjacent factory building remains in the valley today. The valley it is in took the name "Carding Mill Valley", and is now a tourist attraction and well-known starting location for walkers (being at the heart of the Long Mynd range). It is owned (along with the entire hill range) by the National Trust, who have a visitor centre there.

Tomorrow we'll be bringing home the Christmas tree and Flattery really wanted to be helpful, so she started working on untangling the lights. Unfortunately, things didn't go as planned...

You can read more about Flattery at TalesAndTails.com.

I have seen a White-eyed Vireo only once before 2 years ago. Normally staying south of the Great Lakes, this is an uncommon visitor to S. Ontario. It took 6 visits to our Sedgewick Forest wood lot before I finally saw him.

viewing it large on black will not make this look better.

Too. Tired.

It was a long day, but thoroughly worth it. Got to see my best friend for the first time since she moved to New Mexico in June. Got a haircut, though since I'm growing it out, it doesn't look drastically different, just cleaner. Bought a new car (!!). Accompanied my best friend while she reveled in the all shops that metro DC has to offer, that aren't even within 4 hours of where she currently lives.

Now I'm going to crash to sleep... and probably wake to find that half of what I just wrote doesn't make the least bit of sense. ::chuckle::

The Adventure

The sun peaked across the horizon on the sleepy little resort. Honni yawned and stretched, untangling themself from a certain elf. They quietly got dressed for a morning walk along the beach of the isle. The crisp air felt good against the nymph’s skin. They stopped for a quick Boba tea, before making their way down to the sand and water. As the sun climbed higher, Honni reflected on the last couple days. The peace and calm, the laughs and hugs shared with family, the warm kisses stolen with Melethril. This escape to their grandparents’ resort was just what our adventurer needed to recharge.

Our Daily Challenge - June 4, 2018 - "Muted colors"

Still playing around with this background, although once again you don't get to see the real color, I'm afraid.

A shocking number of sliders were pushed for this one - at least by my standards.

It was obviously desaturated "a bit", but then I started playing. :)

The odd thing was that I cranked the warmth to the max, then desaturated most of the yellow back out again. This seemed dumb, but when I tried to untangle those two I couldn't get it to look "right".

So I gave up.

I also saturated the highlights toward yellow - a knob I I haven't touched in years.

The contrast is also higher than normal, as I liked what it did to the background and I'd already gone "artsy" on this one.

Ten minutes to get the picture, an hour spent processing it, with Henry smiling at me the entire time. :)

Today an estimated 150 million light sets are sold in America each year, adding to the tangled millions stuffed into boxes each January. They light 80 million homes and consume 6 percent of the nation’s electrical load each December. And though the contagious joy of these lights has been co-opted orange at Halloween and red at Valentine’s Day, it all started with Johnson’s miracle on 36th Street.

In 1882, in a townhouse at 136 East 36th Street in New York City, Edward Hibberd Johnson had an idea that would make him the unsung set decorator of a zillion holiday snapshots.

don't you hate it when you place your ear phones down and then go back to pick it up later and then it some how gets all effed up and tangled and you have to sit there for 5 minutes untangling it?

i don't even know.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=8inJtTG_DuU

“ “Sit with me,” he says.

As I move to rest next to him, he stops me. “Not there. Here.”

He motions to the spot between his legs.

Awkwardly, I settle in front of him.

He, the king of secure, waves off any distance between us

as he gathers me into the safe shelter of his body.

The blood pulses faster in my veins.

I like being this close to him.

Maybe a little too much.

“You’re beautiful.”

His breath tickles the skin behind my ear,

and the small hairs stand on end with the joyous sensation.

“You’re smart and funny. I love how your eyes shine when you laugh.”

He glides his fingers against my skin causing an addictive tingling.

“I love how you lace your fingers and brush your hair from your face when you’re nervous.

I love how you offer yourself so completely to me—no fear. You’re loyal and strong.”

“I’m not strong.”

I cut him off. The panic attacks confirm that.

Unable to be near him anymore, I attempt to untangle myself from him,

but he becomes a solid wall around me and I jerk in his arms in protest.

His tender hold tightens,

and the words feel like poetry because of the deep, soothing way he speaks.

“You’re wrong. I see you exactly as you are.” ”

Sometimes life seems a sticky, tangled mess. But it's a beautiful mess with the opportunities it presents to become unstuck and untangled. Not always easy but always worth it.

91/365

All this stormy weather has been working it's magic stormy fingers through my mind! This last week my mind has felt like the equivalent of a malfunctioning power drill, stuck at full speed. I haven't been able to quiet it, it's not set negatively or positively per se, it's just 100 miles a minute and very overwhelming and I feel swallowed up when it happens.

BUT I've done some writing, done some untangling, forgiven myself for being human, acknowledged some needs, and the tides have receded and I feel calm and quiet again. Hooray! *dance dance*
