so i got shocked for the first time ever on the weekend. went to unplug the work light i had plugged into this receptacle. right hand on light plug and left hand on this receptacle, touching the wire where the plastic was missing.

my whole left hand and part of my arm up to the elbow instantly went numb, as if i had smashed my funny bone very hard. didn't hurt, it was more worrying than anything. feeling came back quickly, phew!

i put a piece of tape on the receptacle to remind myself not to use it until it was fixed. not that i was going to really forget...

The annual PowerPlex User Conference is packed wall-to-wall with value content. We spend a few days filling our heads with best practices, new ideas and more capabilities. So at the end of the day, we like to unplug our brains for a few hours and have some fun. We call it “PartyPlex”. It’s a chance to hang-out with all the Plex users and Plexians, engage in some friendly competition and raise money for one of our favorite charities.

This year’s PartyPlex took place at the new Dallara IndyCar Racing Experience in Speedway, Indiana. Attendees experienced the thrill of racing with laps in the cockpit of a street legal IndyCar, behind the wheel of racing simulator games and around the minicar track. There was plenty of good food, drink and music to go around.

This year’s focus charity was the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Michigan. Make-A-Wish grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with joy. We think it’s a remarkable organization. We were delighted to raise more than $21,000 to support their efforts with the PartyPlex Silent Auction and games.

While at #Unplugd11, we worked in small groups on our chapter pieces, and convened as a large group for common discussions. The space upstairs at the lodge was very conducive to our purposes. What a great venue!!

It can be hard to know where the line between living and dying lies. If a machine is keeping the heart beating and the lungs ventilating, but there is no awakening or recognition of that person to her surroundings, we start to wonder if she is dead. Eventually we let that person go and unplug the machine. And there is usually a (literally) universal sigh of relief. The tougher case is the person who is breathing on their own, but still not there. We don’t have it in us to stop that breathing body, but we also don’t know what to do. That person is between life and death. Stuck. We equate living with responding. If you ignore me long enough, I guess I will assume you are dead…

Today on NPR I heard a story in which the last stage of death was described as occurring when your name was uttered for the last time. Your memory of me defines the moment of my dying. Maybe I shouldn’t ignore you. But my body will be gone and your memory will start the immediate re-sculpting of who I am. I will be contained in distorted fragments all around the world (or more likely the hood), rolling around in the imperfect memories of my loved ones, only living as long as you say my name.

Unplug'd -- yes. I see that.

Of it's own accord my TiBook power adapter started sparking and generally catching fire. Fortunately I was around to unplug it. I went to the Apple Store in London and bought a replacement - £55! That's a lot for a power transformer in my opinion.

The later models have a reinforced flex at the cable entry point so I'm hoping it won't happen again.

That little red standby light on our TV haunts me. How much energy is the TV using while no one’s even watching it? What about when it’s on? What about my laptop? The microwave? How much CO2 are we emitting constantly just by owning appliances? I’m about to find out. This weekend, while trapped inside by a wicked snowstorm, my mom and I ordered a “Kill A Watt”—a clever little device that measures electricity usage for any appliance you plug into it. Should be helpful in keeping our carbon footprint in check.

My brother's complaining that the Robosapien he got for Christmas is obsolete. It's a pretty expensive robot (around US$100), and he only enjoyed it a couple of days after Christmas last year. And now it's coming to life. See how the remote's idle.
