Marta Sui Tubi @ Villa Cavaglioni San Rocco a Pilli [Si]
18 Gennaio 2008
I pezzi proposti raffinati e curati.
. . . 1st, Find an unoccupied telephone pole, 2nd: Be sure your owl is fairly clean and dry before plugging it in. 3rd: Make sure you use 110 current, 220 might cause the owl to explode, and finally, when the owl's eyes turn bright yellow, unplug your owl immediately. This has been a public service announcement!

Friday Evening
Today consisted of laundry, a nap, playing with the puppy, packing the kids bag, getting fast food, finding games for Sheldyn to play on the computer, sitting out front with Jeremy while the dogs and puppy played in the grass, taking my picture for the day, taking the kids to their Dad, and getting dinner at Pizza Cookery. We used to go there every single Friday night for well over a year. We hadn't been in a long time. My salad wasn't as good as usual. Came home hung out with Jeremy, and transfered a shit load of pictures onto my external hard drive. I had completely ran out of space on my C drive...like I couldn't even get my pictures from today on my computer. I always get nervous transferring pictures onto the external for fear that they really won't be on there the next time I go to get them. So, I unplug it and plug it in like 5 times to make sure. Ha! Those damn RAW files take up a lot of fricken space! Holy shit!
It is now 2:27am, and I really should go to bed, but I'm not tired. I also hate sleeping late on the weekends, but when you stay up until the wee hours of the morning, what do you expect. I wish we didn't need sleep, except a long nap in the middle of the day, because I really hate bed time. I do however really love nap time.
In the historic window of the College, the monumental facade of the Saint-Loup church is reflected.
In this timeless universe, the wooden benches welcome customers to enjoy a beer or a coffee, while admiring the outdated decor of the bistro in the mirrors that adorn the walls.
If the college is known for its atmosphere, the café is also famous for the quality of its service. The menu is limited but the beer is served according to the rules.
The operators ensure the daily maintenance of the pumps. Hygiene and cleanliness are at the center of the service: "every evening, we unplug the keg of Stella and put the water on the beer. We rinse the pumps. And every morning, we put the beer back in the bore", "Above all, you don't need bubbles... A compact foam and you have to cut the beer well",
I'll keep my apology short: I have been having the same issues with Flickr as you, three days with almost no access at all to one or more of the facets of the site. Since Flickr is my one and only social media site, the experience has been isolating to say the least. I will keep trying: for close to five years, I had never missed a day of commenting (for better or worse) or posting. ("Wildlife of the West" has had even more problems, but I don't think you want to be told to unplug your modem, plug it back in, and hope for the best.)
2014 was the last of seven visits to Yellowstone. Fortunately, I have B&W snapshots from my Kodak Brownie from 1947. Unfortunately, four of my trips are on slides, and I don't even have a viewer, but maybe I'll use this time to scour eBay OR... bit the bullet and have the 20+ 120-slide trays transferred to disk.
Fortunately, I have a very good memory or at least imagine I do ;-) But I do remember some of the changes over this 60-year period including the visit we made three years after THE Yellowstone Fires of 1988. And, perhaps even more fortunate, we got a chance to show our two daughters (at the right age) some of the highlights of the park.
I didn't know that this trip (2014) was to be my last, and though wildlife was a little more scarce that I'd hoped, I took more pictures from more vantage points than ever before. The lends wasn't long enough for some of the mammals, but I added nine new species of birds in the first three days. I saw geysers spout off, geysers (like The Twins) that I'd never been able to photograph before. Here is one shot that I found in my archives, and I'll keep searching for images that I haven't posted yet.
The more ways we have to connect, the more many of us seem desperate to unplug.

Happy weekend!
I had only a few moments to photograph these extremely rare fawn birds, taking drinks out of a friend's bird feeder. We are in West Virginia here, where the fawn birds, the largest species in the state, are a very rare sighting, indeed.
Do look up "fawn birds" on the internet, say on wikipedia or some such. You will undoubtedly get a lot of question marks.
Or this: "Did you mean Cow Herds?" Or, "Please check your spelling, idiot person". Then you know you are communicating with a robot. Some of them are okay, I guess. But the majority of them, the robots, display a high degree of arrogance. Those, we should just unplug altogether.
Fawn Birds. Believe your eyes. They're demonstrably real.

After I had downloaded the three previous photos from my phone to my laptop (only one really looked good), I stepped outside again and saw the rainbow looking brighter and bolder. I went back in to unplug my phone, and when I got back outside the rainbow had faded slightly. It was brighter and much longer. Nature never waits for its closeup. Either get it at that moment, or lose it.

Well I'm standing here looking at you
What do I see? I'm looking straight through
It's so sad when you're young
To be told you're having fun
So unplug the jukebox
And do us all a favor, yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah, that music's lost its taste
So try another flavor

Went to Monavale Pool this morning for our Annual Christmas Shoot with Focus. 65 Togs, all decked out in their best Chrissy Gear. Have had this shot in mind all week, and I'm happy with the result. This one is an 8 minute single frame taken about 10 minutes before sunrise. The "Ants" on the rockpool are a small portion of the shooters on the day. Hope you like "Ant Music". Cheers, Mike
I haven’t felt like this in months... after almost a year finally starting to feel like myself again ♥️
Abbot's Lobsters, CT. For me the next few days will be a time to unwind and unplug and eat a lot of seafood. See you after the weekend
I finally had to take my computer in to be repaired late today -not what I needed right now, to put it mildly. Hope the repair won’t take too long. The technician is really good.
Adding a few photos from yesterday's Christmas Bird Count for High River. I might have to be without my computer for however (?) long, as it keeps stopping and I have to unplug it every time. No idea why this is happening. The computer freezes; the top light on top of the tower stays on, but the tiny light on the front of the tower goes off and won't come back again and I can't use the computer. Today, I will have to call in at the store and speak to the technician and see what he says. Hoping so much that I won't be without my computer for long as I really, really need to have access to it, especially for the next two weeks ... sigh.
I think yesterday was more of a barn and cat day, than a bird day : ) My kind of day!
It takes a lot of wiring to make a cell service tower function, here grafted onto the top of a water tower standing on a hilltop. Signs on the fence warn of high radiofrequency energy on closer approach. Hmmm...I wonder what happens if I unplug this one...

My loves, how is your Sunday going? Are you out in the world soaking up the sun? It feels so good to unplug for a while and breathe the fresh weekend air. Went on a walk early this morning and the sun filtered through the trees and the streets were quiet except for the birds. It was lovely! Going to meet friends at the lake now. The more time I spend in nature, the happier and more whole I feel. #enjoyyoursunday <3
I was having a pre-breakfast look at the beach when I met this snowy egret.
Sally and I have been watching the red tide and algae blooms ravage the coast of Southwest Florida since September, when we first had reservations for a trip to Sanibel Island (our favorite place to unplug). It was heartbreaking to see photographs of the beaches full of dead animals (fish, dolphins, manatees, turtles) every morning.
So, when we visited last week, it was heartening to see wildlife in any and every form. Every manatee or dolphin sighting was a gift. Watching the egret snatch fish after fish out of the water reassured me that things are restored to their natural order. It felt like "our" Sanibel--only maybe a little better.
This Bengal tiger likes visitors. Tiger is the national animal of India.

Waterfalls always seem to impress me. Big or small it doesn’t matter. I can sit there, unplug from the world and come away feeling rejuvenated. Maybe it’s the negative ions or maybe it’s simply being in nature. Regardless photographing them will never get old.

True story: This is a photo of the box that connected us to our telephone land line when we first moved in during the mid-90s. The phone went dead frequently and after some months we discovered that a neighborhood kid would crawl under the deck and unplug the wires. He was caught by a neighbor who called the police.
Several days later our doorbell rang at 3:00 am. I don’t have to tell you that I will never answer the door at that time of the morning. I did peek out a nearby window and saw a shadowy male figure standing on the porch. He started moving around the house checking doors and windows. When he reached the back of the house I flipped on the porch light and rushed at the door with an oak samurai sword that I own. (Wooden swords crush instead of cut and are no less of a weapon.) The guy took off running and we called the police who amazingly appeared scarcely a dozen heartbeats later at the door.
The burglar apparently had earlier been going through the homes of my neighbors if he found their doors unlocked. The police brought in dogs, sealed off the neighborhood and even flew a helicopter which swept the area with a search light. The police told me the next morning that the burglar had to be one of the neighbors. Otherwise they would have caught him.
A day or two later the neighbor whose son kept disconnecting our phone moved out of his house with his family in the middle of the night.
There’s a story here, and I can guess at only some of the details. I suspect that it was the father of the boy who kept disconnecting our phone who tried to break in. Was the son supposed to disconnect the phone in the days before cell phones were ubiquitous so we couldn't call the police during a robbery? Or had the boy watched his father disconnect the wires earlier and got caught while imitating him? No way to tell, but I have to thank the rapid response from the police department that sent a clear message to the burglar that his next move he would be caught.

A Pain in the Butt -
The forest is filled with birds, their songs, with insects, their random ramblings and with trees rooted to everything. A plant sucker was ticking off her parasitic infection and snippets of their dialogues met my ears when the navigating wind died down. Soon I find myself engrossed in conversations I am not part of.
Bacon Bug: What have you done to me? I can’t breathe… my wings are permanently down… I can’t feed… my emotion is numb… I’m anaemic to the point of blacking out… my rump hurts. Arrgghh! Somebody save me!
Lurving Leech: You’re acting like a two year old. Grow up and stop whining. In the first place who asked you to frequent the bushy undergrowth where barnacles thrive? The impulse to attach was irresistible so I followed you home.
Bacon Bug: All leeches are the same. They like to cling onto warm things and turn them cold. You get what you desired and zapped all my energy, leaving me nothing. As long as you’re around, I’m never getting back my normal state.
Lurving Leech: What do you want me to do? Unplug my IV tubing and become vegetarian? Look on the bright side, in the vicinity you’re known as the prettiest hopper with a red potato on the bum with rectal prolapse.
Bacon Bug: Having this kind of beauty emphasizes sickness, I don’t need it. Get off my back!
Lurving Leech: Uh-uh, not on your life. Pleasure spurts on the first seep and the bracelets of blood is smoothly shuddering; I’ve been parasituck on you ever since. Pigs might fly under no circumstances will I abandon you. Nay, you’re my best pick.
Bacon Bug: Please, when will you lose grip?
Lurving Leech: Until you’re dry when you die? Captains always go down with their ship, but I’m no skipper. Someday when you totally fossilize and I’m the only presence seen, I will float like dust bunnies onto my next dinghy.
Bacon Bug: Argh… ah.. ahh… ahhh… you!
Lurving Leech: Bless you!
The lesson to learn here; love is a hurting thing. Ladies, pick your man wisely so you won’t complain. If you’re married, stop complaining about the man you can’t change because it does no good to focus on the pain.

I am on a bit of a posting tear lately, luckily for all of you. :-p Not sure how much longer I will keep up with the daily doubles, but I am enjoying getting a few more images up at least for a little bit. In part I am driven by the expectation that I will be producing a lot of new photos in the short term and I am already falling behind in terms of the queue of stuff to post.
Anyway, had this song stuck in my head while editing images this morning and it somehow resonated with this image, even though this was made under nightlight and the song is about... well... daylight.

this was my kind of weekend. no big plans. just time at home unplug and reconnect with my life. i honestly don't know how or when it got so discombobulated and womperjawed. but it feels good to have life back to 'normal.'
If you ever find yourself in Homer, Alaska during the summer season, make the short boat trip to Halibut Cove for a meal at the Saltry. Walk along the historic boardwalks and take-in the sights of this lovely Cove.
If your schedule permits, and you’re lucky, book a stay at “Halibut Cove Rentals” and unplug for a little while in your own cabin watching the sun slowly set on this idillic place. And if you’re really lucky, you might just be the keeper of the lighthouse for a sunset or two.
I'm fortunate to live just a few minutes from spots like this. But the creative side of me wants to try new things, so this weekend we're off to Palm Springs and the Salton Sea to relax, unplug and visit locations we've never been to before. We're going on what is called a babymoon, our last vacation before having our baby, so we're going to lounge poolside, eat lots at the buffet, sleep in, drive around and generally be lazy Americans.
Have a great weekend.
We took a long break between Christmas and New year and then some extra days added on to it, so I'm now slowly getting back. It was wonderful to unplug from technology and appreciate nature and time spent with family and mostly I just allowed myself to rest. I didn't even do a lot of thinking or planning for the new year, so no big resolutions...maybe just to be more present in the moment.
Since being back, I thought about our "New Year Mugshot", a tradition we kept with Misty and Jasper every year since 2011. You can see the whole series in my album here: www.flickr.com/photos/yookyland/albums/72157691834275725/. After Jasper left us in 2021 and Alyeska joined our family, I did try to continue on 2022, but it just hurt too much...so I stopped. At this point, I do want to carry on the tradition with Alyeska, so we're going to give it a try in a different setup. Mugshots will forever be reserved for Misty and Jasper. Anyways, we'll see how it all goes!
Wishing everyone belated Happy New Year--hope it'll bring you lots of happiness and good health!

Unplugging is important for our mental health and two of my favorite ways to do so are to get into nature and use notebooks. Besides helping us disconnect from screens, notebooks (or writing by hand, in general) have benefits, including helping to spark creativity and improving our memory. Plus, a notebook never runs out of batteries!
