Shanghai, China

December 2015

It was both a frustrating and interesting experience capturing both images from the Vue Bar in Shanghai. The Vue Bar offers such a magnificent aerial view of Shanghai - you can see both sides of the Huangpu River - the Bund on the Puxi side and the modern skyline on the Pudong side. However, I was not aware that tripods were not allowed. When I got to the bar, I met a fellow photographer - a photographer from Switzerland. He attemtped twice to set his camera up on one of these small table top tripods and was stopped by the security. I had my unopened regular tripod with me and when I saw how the security had earlier stopped the Swiss photographer, I knew there was no way I could use my tripod. So the rest of the evening was desperately spent trying to balance my camera as steady as I could on my camera backpack and capturing night shots without the use of a proper tripod. As you can guess, the other photographer was as irritated as I was with the security issues we both faced that night. I don't have many usable shots from Vue and these 2 images I am posting here are acceptable but by no means the best that they could be.

Through the open French window the warm sun

lights up the polished breakfast-table, laid

round a bowl of crimson roses, for one –

a service of Worcester porcelain, arrayed

near it a melon, peaches, figs, small hot

rolls in a napkin, fairy rack of toast,

butter in ice, high silver coffee pot,

and, heaped on a salver, the morning’s post.

she comes over the lawn, the young heiress,

from her early walk in her garden-wood,

feeling that life’s a table set to bless

her delicate desires with all that’s good,

that even the unopened future lies

like a love-letter, full of sweet surprise.

Janjehli had a lot to offer to nature lovers and admirers of beauty. It had rained the whole day and it was at night that I clicked this shot of a beautiful yellow rose bud with a hint of red on its petals and another totally unopened bud covered in droplets of rain water with a pitch dark background where the buds are looking so well defined and so pretty giving the tiniest detail of the buds and the stem!

Longfellow's Poetical Works. 1880. Unopened for decades, his work, his great labour, forgotten utterly.

We dug up some wild Asclepias tuberosa plants a couple of decades ago, and placed them in our flower garden. I'm glad we did. They give us lots of orange. They also attract bees and butterflies, although there aren't any in this photo. The plants are members of the milkweed family.

"A fascinating finch of coniferous woodlands, the Red Crossbill forages on nutritious seeds in pine, hemlock, Douglas-fir, and spruce cones. Their specialized bills allow them to break into unopened cones, giving them an advantage over other finch species. Because conifers produce seeds unpredictably, Red Crossbills sometimes wander (or “irrupt”) far beyond their usual range. They nest wherever and whenever they find abundant food, sometimes even in winter. Several types of Red Crossbill exist; they each have different calls, feed on particular conifer species, and might represent distinct species."

Chives, scientific name Allium schoenoprasum, is a species of flowering plant in the family Amaryllidaceae that produces edible leaves and flowers. Their close relatives include the common onions, garlic, shallot, leek, scallion, and Chinese onion.

Chives are a commonly used herb and can be found in grocery stores or grown in home gardens. In culinary use, the green stalks (scapes) and the unopened, immature flower buds are diced and used as an ingredient for omelettes, fish, potatoes, soups, and many other dishes. The edible flowers can be used in salads. Chives have insect-repelling properties that can be used in gardens to control pests.

Yes indeed, I'm desperate to make pictures. F ing covid! Could this be the cure? The bottle looks to be full and unopened. Hmmm....

For Looking Close on... Friday's "Flora on white background" theme. I went and bought a bunch of flowers last night as I realised I hadn't prepared for today. I was very disappointed to find that the flowers were not looking so good this morning despite being left in a cool room. Hence the focus on one unopened flower.

Did you know:

The unopened flower buds from the daisy can be marinated and used in a similar way to capers.

Let me be your daisy forever and ever

I have always been

I just didn't know

These plumeria blossoms burn with unnatural beauty, petals glowing from deep pink to molten orange, as if lit from within by something not quite of this world. Nestled in a lush tangle of leaves, they seem too vivid, too perfect, like offerings left in a place where time stands still. The unopened buds hint at more to come, but the air feels heavy, watchful. This photograph captures not just tropical elegance, but a whisper of something eerie an ancient bloom that remembers.

Wasp (female)

I am not sure which species of wasp this is. She was checking out the unopened flowers of the Common Ivy.

Happy Beautiful Bug Butt Thursday!

Taken a few days ago, one of our dogwood trees. The bracts were starting to open out, but the flowers were still just little green nubs. They are both further along now.

Dogwoods (Cornus florida) are small trees. They are a common ornamental in Upstate South Carolina, and elsewhere. Our tree with pink bracts is a little behind the ones with white bracts.

This still unopened roll of ribbons is getting to be vintage! I've had it so long. Anyway, Happy Smile on Saturday! :-) Ribbons!

actually a chestnut slowly bursting out of its very prickly jacket.

I found it in our yard, unopened, very carefully picked it up with gardening gloves on, those spikes are sharp!, and placed it on the windowsill of the bathroom where it gets plenty of light, this was about two weeks ago, and it is now opening !

Grandmothers Silverware

While cleaning up we found an ornate old wooden box tucked away in the back of the storage closest; lost to the years it sat unused and unopened. pulling it out of the place it has sat for thirty years since her passing.

We opened the box and the memories come flooding back... inside it was grandmas silverware set all shiny and polished, ready for the next big event.

One taken a couple of weeks ago. The light wasn’t brilliant that afternoon and the sun had cortina,y gone behind a cloud by this point. Needed a little bit of PP to lighten things up to be able to see the bud. Reminds me a little of a ballerina about to start on her performance. Thanks for stopping
