Neotinea ustulata (Orchidaceae) ) 149 24

The name of this beautiful orchid refers to the dark red coloration of the unopened flowers that produces the scorched effect from which the common name burnt-tipped orchid is derived.

It is an isolated species that has always been the subject of debate as to its true generic origin. It began its existence formally described as Neotinia ustulata and was later reclassified as Orchis, where it remained for many years until research indicated that both it and its companions in the Orchis tridentata group should be more properly relocated to the Neotinia stable. It has always been puzzling that, despite often growing in the thousands with other Orchis species, Orchis ustulata has never been found to hybridize with any species other than Orchis. tridentata.

It is a widespread orchid, with a range that takes it from the Faroe Islands and Sweden north to the Mediterranean and east to western Siberia. It is usually most common in mountainous areas, where it prefers a full sun location on alkaline soils, usually short grass and alpine pastures.

Given its range of ecological zones, it can be found from April to August. Today it is known to have at least two successive flowering waves, and these later flowering plants are believed to be a separate subspecies, tentatively named aestivalis.

Stunning, even before it opens...

The crepe myrtles (aka crape myrtles) in our area are coming into full bloom, but I found this branch that's not as far along yet. Promising, though.

I suggest that you view a larger size.

An outfit I found lurking unopened in my invent. I'm partial to a fairy or fantasy picture.

This fly sits on an unopened flower bud in my yard. I was using the 65mm macro lens to see what insects I could get close to. I love the texture on the flower bud.

This was a gift from a Russian friend. I'm not much of a drinker so it's been sitting around for over a year - unopened! But I hear it's best served right out of the freezer with a couple of close buddies ;-)

I didn’t know what to write for this shot, nor how to title it, but looking at it now, I still can’t title it, lol.

During that trip to Universal, I stepped out of a box and shot entirely with the telephoto lens. It wasn’t easy to carry around in the heat, but I love the images I was able to capture. Your perspective changes when you focus pass the crowds.

Nope.....still no title.....

I found an old unopened pack of 50 sheets of 4x5 Ilford HP4 in the back of my fridge; forgot I had that! Loaded 6 sheets in my Grafmatic back to test it out. Not a great day; dull, overcast, cold. This was shot wide open at f4.7 1/125th sec with my Polaroid Pathfinder 110a converted to 4x5 and processed for 2 hours in Rodinal 1:100 (stand).

Not my best work but, as a test of a film stock I had no expectations with; a success.

This is a building next to the Grand Canal Theatre, think its an unopened hotel, any info would be appreciated. Its a pretty interesting looking building either way !

Is its only use to be an object to photograph?

Not too bad result for a 70 year old lens!

Talk about bokeh!

Two years ago a friend gave me an unopened box of Kodak Lantern Slide Contrast plates, Contrast 3, (Orthochromatic, marked “develop before October 1953”!!) and I had no idea what to use them for, as they were an odd size (3.5" X 4.25"). Well, today I was thinking about Jason Lane's Dry Plates and remembered I had these old Kodak plates available, so I stuck one in a film holder with masking tape, stuffed it in my Intrepid 4x5 with the Kodak Ektar 203mm lens at f16, and this exposure was 4 minutes.

Its contrasty but has some middle tones. With J. Lane plates in mind, I developed this in Dektol 1:2 for 3 minutes. I tried one with D-76 and it just added too much fog, so I will stick with Dektol 1:2

Merry Christmas, folks. Lets hope 2021 is better than 2020 was. Ugh.

Another image of the Industar50 today with extension tube. This time it is with 30mm one. I took several images like this one and the focus was either on the point of the plant or the water droplet that is more prominent in the image. I should have tried a different aperture to get them both in focus with the 30mm tube. Live and learn :-)

The plant in the image is unopened Aloe blooms in my garden.

So called because its larvae are predators upon grasshopper eggs, this insect is a fly, not a bee. As an adult it is, however, a bee mimic, which may serve to deter some predators. I'll admit that the insect world is vast and confusing, and I may get it wrong as often as I get it right, so if anyone has a different opinion, please do not hesitate to correct my I.D. of this as Systoechus vulgaris.

It was resting briefly atop an unopened poppy in my backyard garden. There are huge numbers of them present this week in my corner of the prairie. Fuzzy, furry, and sort of cute, it spent several minutes cleaning sticky pollen off its long proboscis. These flies are harmless; they don't bite or sting. They are always welcome in my garden.

SN/NC: Allium Spp. Allium Schoenoprasum, Allium Giganteum, Liliaceae Family

Chives is the common name of Allium schoenoprasum, an edible species of the Allium genus. Its close relatives include the garlic, shallot, leek, scallion, and Chinese onion.

A perennial plant, it is widespread in nature across much of Europe, Asia, and North America.

A. schoenoprasum is the only species of Allium native to both the New and the Old Worlds.

The name of the species derives from the Greek σχοίνος, skhoínos (sedge) and πράσον, práson (leek). Its English name, chives, derives from the French word cive, from cepa, the Latin word for onion. Chives are a commonly used herb and can be found in grocery stores or grown in home gardens. In culinary use, the scapes and the unopened, immature flower buds are diced and used as an ingredient for fish, potatoes, soups, and other dishes. Chives have insect-repelling properties that can be used in gardens to control pests.

O nome da espécie deriva do grego σχοίνος, skhoínos (junco) e πράσον, práson (alho-porro).
