Unlike yesterday's post of gulls, these are not flying high but are resting on the rocks and watching the sun go down...

Have a great week everyone!

A (probably female) Japanese common grass yellow sucking nectar of the blue mistflower. Unlike the typical appearance of the species, this lady has subtle yellow wings and dark gray eyes.

Eurema mandarina (Japanese common grass yellow, ‘Kita-kichou’ in Japanese) is a butterfly in the family Pieridae, native to Japan and northeastern Asia. Conoclinium coelestinum (Mistflower, formerly Eupatorium coelestinum) is a perennial flowering plant in the aster family, native to North America.

Unlike the Alhambra Slough, there's no way to capture 23,000 acres of oak woodland for my second most favorite "spot" over the past 14 years to capture these birds. I'll give it a try with a series in the next week. In the meantime, how about my favorite woodpecker. I've discussed the behavior and family structure for Acorn Woodpeckers, but until you've spent an hour or two watching four or five (or maybe ten - they're not wearing name tags) pounding acorns into dead oak trees or telephone poles, you've missed a birding experience that is made even more enjoyable by the fact that there's little squabbling intra- or inter-family, and there's little to do with other species. What they do keep an eye out for are California ground squirrels and the few crows we have here. Their caches are their survival and while we've had some ups and downs in populations, they seem to be doing just fine. Oddly, after all these years, I've never seen an Acorn Woodpecker take an acorn OUT of a limb ... except to put it in a better location the definition of which is known only to the woodpecker.

Before landing on Namur soil, the Pavilion was the symbol of Belgium at the Universal Exhibition in Milan. This creation by Patrick Genard, awarded for its eco-design, daringly completes the landscape of the Citadel. Today, perched on its promontory, the Pavilion is the totem pole of digital transformation. the Pavilion collects the visions of those who question the present through digital technology. His mission ? Allow everyone to take ownership of the challenges of our time through initiation, discovery and experimentation. Curious and daring: this is how the Pavilion is configured. Of wood, nails and metal on the outside, the Pavilion of the inside is built like a joyful organic creature, constantly changing. An evolution not unlike that of the world, made up of trial and error.

Unlike the Ferruginous Pigmy Owl, which has stripes on its head, the Colima has little dots.

Unlike last year when they were counted in the thousands. there are very few Crossbills here this season. I have seen only a handful on river valley trails. This is most likely due to spruce cone production upon which the Crossbills depend. Last year there was a copious crop. This year there are much fewer cones and much fewer Crossbills.

Unlike the devil, I've never seen the face of God... - Rob Zombie

Unlike in the DC area, the variety of hummingbird species in Costa Rica blew me away. Many of them were new to me. They move so fast and are incredibly active while seeking nectar. It was a blast to watch.

Unlike when you travel one has the luxury for a place that is decently close by to wait until a near perfect day. So when in the weather forecast there is a day with zero chance of rain, cool clean and clear air to make ideal conditions for hiking and photography I hit Goggle maps looking for some place close by and headed to towards Lake Minnewaska State Park which is about a two hour drive from my urban concreate hole in NYC and had a splendid day. Again using the Panoramic feature of cell phone to get this nice wide sweeping view.

Unlike most other herons, it feeds in relatively dry grassy habitats, often with cattle or other large mammals. It catches insect and small vertebrate prey disturbed by these animals. It also captures ticks and flies from cattle.

Unlike the other short stemed ones in the garden, this daylily is a more tradional one on long stems. Like the others it manages to persist in very poor soil and present a few flowers each year. The petals are narrow without much substance compared to the shorter ones. They're quite attractive bobbing in a slight breeze.

Unlike other coral fungi we've found near the cottage, this one is poisonous.

I'm combing through this year's photos one last time before retiring them from the hard drive. This image was uploaded to Flickr on Dec. 30, 2021.

Thank you to everyone who visits, faves, and comments.

Unlike most woodpeckers, flickers often feed on the ground. They are also one of the few woodpecker species that migrate.

Photographed at Connected Lakes SP, Grand Junction, Colorado.

Unlike the Palm Warbler, the Pine is aptly named. Port Huron SGA.

Unlike other sandpipers that breed in the far North, this is a familiar breeder across the entire country. Ding Darling.

Unlike last year, the black locust trees here are blooming profusely this year.

Unlike Long-billed, prefers coastal habitat. Little Estero CWA.

Unlike most islands in Long Island Sound, the Thimbles are composed of erosion resistant pink granite. Granite from the nearby Stony Creek quarry in Branford was used in the base of the Statue of Liberty, Grand Central Terminal, the Brooklyn Bridge and numerous mansions in NYC and Newport, RI.

Unlike Noway's fjords which are close to or in the Arctic Circle our Fiordland is only halfway to the South Pole and warm enough for trees to cover the walls of the fiord.

Have a good weekend and thanks for passing by.

Unlike many of the Victorian piers the Whitby piers were not built as seaside attractions.. The main West and East piers, seen here, were built to provide shelter from the currents and storms of the North Sea. Although piers have existed at Whitby since Medieval times to facilitate trade and fishing, including whaling, the main structures that now form the East and West piers were completed in the first half of the 19th century, and both piers were extended in the early 20th century in an effort to control low water flow and a whirlpool at the harbour entrance.

Unlike their brothers and sisters, this Mallard duck is very yellow. Attracting lots of people with cameras.

Completely unlike the fleur-de-lys, the lush dark red lily in the silver field of the coat of arms is a proud emblem of beautiful Florence. The presence of such a lily in the coat of arms explains the magnificent motto: «A flower in full bloom - so flourishes the blooming Florence.»

Anatole France used the image of the "red lily" as the title of his novel. "Red Lily" is a novel about love in the world of politicians and prudent businessmen.

The play based on this novel made a huge impression on the young Marcel Proust. The red lily, which gave the title of the novel, is not just a flower, but a symbol of Florence, where the love of the social beauty Countess Marten-Bellemm and the talented sculptor Jacques Deschartre blossomed.

Unlike the Honey Bee this one decided to enter the water! Resulting in everything looking sodden and flat. Its photo shoot was over! I returned it to the Lavender bush to dry out!

Red-winged Blackbird watching me closely!

Posing nicely in the late afternoon light, while keeping a wary eye on me - I must have been close to the nest.

I find Red-winged Blackbirds to be very difficult to capture due to the very dark feathers - here everything was well setup to capture those details - I did very very little post processing to this image, unlike my usual bending ;)

This kind of shows off the very nice bokeh that this 400mm f/4.5 can produce - I hope you like it!

Unlike so many of these close-ups lately, this is not a focus stack, but a single exposure at f/36. I suppose the difference would show up in a giant mural, but I've no plans for such prints in this lifetime. It's a different batch of cut flowers, too, so the color is different. And the design, so to speak, is simpler, perhaps more elegant.

Unlike some British bird species which migrate annually, it is possible to see robins all year round. In the UK robins can be seen in parks, woodland, hedgerows – and if you’re lucky your garden or allotment

Unlike other sandpipers that breed in the far North, this is a familiar breeder across the entire country. Ding Darling.

Unlike the other bears in this park that are supposedly used to humans, this one did not like having his picture taken.

Unlike the squirrels back home on the farm, the squirrels here in Wildwood have a much tougher time eking out a living.

There aren't many trees, and none that offer up anything edible

As a result, I knew it would only be a matter of time before one of them would find my sunflowers and make short work of them.

Sure enough, I came out the other morning and all the sunflower heads in my garden had disappeared.

My next door neighbors that live on the 2nd floor, also grew some sunflowers in containers up on their porch.

They lasted about a week longer than the ones in my garden, but this a.m., I came out just in time to see this little gal sitting on their roof feasting on the seeds from the last bloom from their containers..

Bon appetite!

Unlike some, I don't change my watches too often. I've had a total of 4 throughout my life (in my 60s now). My parents gave me this watch in my early 20s and I wore it for 20 years.

Unlike his sister, Lisa, Bart responds to me tickling him with a pussy willow branch. I'm holding it just out of view in this shot, taken at the living room window.

Unlike many large National Trust properties, Penrhyn Castle does not major on gardens...however, there are some pretty spots to enjoy, and the views from the grounds towards Puffin Island are nice.

There are huge Gunnera and this delightful walled gardens....also a fine Fuchsia arch, under refurb when we visited...must go back in Spring next year to appreciate that.

Unlike earlier roads that followed waterways the P&WV took a high route through the hills south of Pittsburgh running along the hilltops and high stepping over the valleys on tall steel bridges. Fortunately the W&LE still operates this line and one can still watch sets of SD40-2's soar across the sky. Pigeon Creek trestle near Van Voorhis, PA 4/25/2021

Rotterdam is unlike many other old Dutch cities, an extremely modern city. It is the only high-rise city in Netherlands with a real skyline. Rotterdam is along with Frankfurt, Paris, Warsaw and London in the European Summit of cities with high-rise buildings. There is still being built in the area around the river Maas. An example of this is the ' Kop van Zuid ' including the Wilhelmina pier. On this site the highest skyscrapers of Netherlands realized, the New Orleans (160 metres), Maas Tower (164 meters), the Baltimore (171 meters) and the Rotterdam (145 m). In the near future there will be still working to the Salmon Harbour Urban Tower (190 metres) and a tower in the Stationskwartier of 220 metres; the tallest building on Dutch soil. Not everything is so high; Other style icons are the cube houses and the pencil on Blaak, the Town Hall, Wholesale building, the Central Library, football stadium de Kuip and the building of the beehive.

.

Unlike a couple Sundays previously, this past Sunday was bright and sunny. There were lots blossoming throughout the gardens, including trees in the Japanese garden area.

Happy Tree-mendous Tuesday.

Unlike others, is not unusual to see this warbler foraging on the ground. Magee.

Unlike dolphins porpoise don't share the same curiosity regarding humans.

Nevertheless we saw about 6 of these beauties on our return trip on board Oban Sea Tours.

unlike other flowers, this one hopes to avoid the sun.

Unlike robins and many other fruit-eating birds, Baltimore Orioles seem to prefer only ripe, dark-colored fruit. Orioles seek out the darkest mulberries, the reddest cherries, and the deepest-purple grapes, and will ignore green grapes and yellow cherries even if they are ripe.

Unlike Cabbage white, checkered white lacks the dark spot on their wingtip. @Calabasas

Unlike most of the fencing that borders the Mojave riverbed, which runs in a straight line parallel to the channel, this winding stretch of wood post and wire fencing snakes in a picturesque s-shaped curve from the sandy foreground toward the mountains (the Three Sisters) in the background.

Camera: Kodak Pocket Instamatic 60 (1972-1976, with 26mm f/2.7 Ektar lens, www.flickr.com/photos/xjx/15852568447/in/photolist-q9QyiD...). One of the more capable of the rectangular 110 cameras of the 1970s, the Instamatic 60 has features which include rangefinder focusing and auto exposure. Unfortunately, the little camera is powered by the long discontinued Kodak K battery, a set of three silver button cells sealed in a plastic case. An enterprising eBay seller, however, has begun offering a 3D-printed K battery replacement, with two plastic halves held together with small screws to allow easy replacement of the three readily available LR44 batteries inside. Problem solved :-)

Unlike their imperturbable smaller relatives, Great Blue Herons on the bayou rarely stick around for closeups. This bird either thought the marsh grass made it invisible or it just didn't care. Neither explanation is very credible but there it is.

Unlike the blue and red grapes, green grapes don't need to change colour, they are green right from the beginning. All they do is grow bigger and they also get more transparent as they ripen.

Unlike the other two Phalaropes (Red-necked and Red), this species does not have fully lobed toes and so rarely swims, spending no time at sea. It feeds in larvae of mosquitoes, flies, shrimp and seed of various aquatic plants. It did its "dance" while moving in circles creating a vortex, bringing small vertebrates to the surface. Smart and unique, I'd say...
