Unlike our other Titmice, that build their nests in holes in trees or walls, long tailed tits build a beautiful intricate oval nest of moss & lichen lined with feathers.
They are normally built low down in hedgerows or brambles and I have already found two completed nests in my local area.

Unlike other kites. this medium-sized raptor has a rounded tail. However, with its white head and breast contrasting with otherwise brick brown plumage, it is unmistakeable.
A fishing kite, it is found within the inland and coastal wetlands of tropical Asia, but also along the coastal wetlands in of northern Australia where it is known as Red-backed Sea Eagle. it is unmistakable. It does in fact closely resembles the African Fishing Eagle.
It has a distinctive nasal, drawn out call, much like a 'Kyeeerrh' sound.
Many thanks for your welcome comments, which are always appreciated.
Unlike most coniferous trees, the deciduous larches and tamaracks shed their foliage in autumn. The showy female flowers appear in early spring when the new needles are just beginning to grow.
Unlike the song, I did look back for one last view of this amazing sunset before heading home for the night. www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZCo3wFCYZsw
Unlike most pics that I regularly see on Hong Kong's popular Symphony of Lights laser show, this one is different as the heavy storm clouds persistently blanketed the skies. We could hardly see the laser beams because of the torrential rain and the overcast conditions. Still, there is no want of colors in the harbor which enveigle just about everyone.

Unlike the main islands of Japan, Ogasawara islands are "oceanic islands" that have never become part of the continent. Such islands generally develop unique eco-systems that often lack in major species in the continent.
In this sense, it is vital to prevent the incursion of invasive species from outside the islands. This may sound good but it is noted that human is also an invasive species, and the elimination of invasive species is subject to a negation of its history of development, residents and economy.
Good or bad, invasive species are rampant in Chichijima.
I cannot identify the trees in the photo exactly, but a botanical identification software of my iPhone reported that one of the trees on the trailside was a "strawberry guava," a species native to Brazil that is on the opposite side of the globe from Ogasawara.
He is unlike any of my other cats. He is not rugged and rough and ready like Charlie or the tabby boys but he does try.
I think he wants to be included so will play with the tabby boys.
I have a fishing game I play with them all and have played with every new cat. I have a fishing rob and put a gel bait on the end. The cats love it and if I have the time they will chase it for hours.
It's a good way to mingle all the cats as well as they are too busy playing they they forget about each other.
What i find funny about this game is they take it in turns. If one cat is chasing the lure the others wait until it is their go and I place the lure in front of them, which I think is pretty cool and awfully polite.
Unlike my childhood refuge from the madness of the streets of NYC, no relief to be found on theses rooftops. But still a marvel to see, the perfect symmetry in balance.
Unlike its cousin, the White-breasted nuthatch, our local Red-breasted never sits still for long, and I was happy to capture this restless little cutie.
Beauty, unlike Love or Friendship or even Life, brings its own sweet reward. You don't have to bring Beauty into existence. You don't have to work at it.

Unlike recent years when dozens of buntings descended on Horsepen Bayou in late April, I only saw two of these jewel-like birds on this outing. But one of the two was this bright sapphire that spent more than a minute feasting on marsh grass seeds down low in Alligator Alley.
Unlike years past, some of the best birds from this visit to the Devils River popped up in the trees and shrubs above and adjacent to the large deck overlooking Dolan Falls. Sitting with friends, enjoying a cool one, and catching sight of locals such as this White-eyed Vireo; no wonder bird watching is one of the world's most popular hobbies.
Unlike McDonald's, UP offered a good looking MAC today on MYCAS. Here we see UP 3642, an EMD SD9043MAC, as it gets ready to make a large setout at Villa Grove.
Pitt River
British Columbia
Canada
Pitt Lake is the second-largest lake in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia. About 53.5 square kilometres in area, it is about 25 km long and about 4.5 km wide at its widest. It is one of the world's relatively few tidal lakes, and among the largest. In Pitt Lake, there is on average a three foot tide range; thus Pitt Lake is separated from sea level and tidal waters during most hours of each day during the 15 foot tide cycle of the Pitt River and Strait of Georgia estuary immediately downstream. The lake's southern tip is 20 km upstream from The Pitt River confluence with the Fraser River and is 40 km east of Downtown Vancouver.
Pitt Lake is in a typical U-shaped glacial valley in the Pacific Ranges of the Coast Mountains. The overdeepening of the lower end of the valley over the span of the Wisconsin glaciation created a trough over 140 m below current sea level. After initial glacial retreat at around 13,000 years ago a saltwater fjord occupied this basin when relative sea levels were still ca 120 to 140m above current levels in the region. Unlike neighbouring Indian Arm and Howe Sound farther west, this fjord basin became partly cut off from tidal waters by sedimentation of the lower Fraser River ca 10,500 years ago, and Pitt Lake is now considered a tidal fjord lake.
Pitt Lake is the second largest of a series of north-south oriented fjord-lakes incising the southern slopes of the Pacific Ranges, the largest being Harrison Lake located 60 km to the east. The other fjord-lakes include Coquitlam Lake, Alouette Lake, Stave Lake, and Chehalis Lake.
The Pitt River drains into the northern end of Pitt Lake. The western shore of Pitt Lake are protected within Pinecone Burke Provincial Park, while most of the eastern shore are protected within Golden Ears Provincial Park. The southern end of Pitt Lake features an extensive marshland called Pitt Polder. While most of this marshland has since been drained for agricultural use, the northernmost portion is strictly protected in order to provide critical habitat for migratory birds.
Communities
The community of Pitt Meadows and the First Nations reserve of Pitt Lake Indian Reserve 5 are located at the southern end of the lake. Just southwest of the lake is the community of Port Coquitlam, which is across the Pitt River from Pitt Meadows. At the north end of the lake is a locality named Alvin, which is a transport and shipping point for logging companies and their employees.

Unlike the Rusties which are declining, the Red-winged Blackbird population has increased. They are considered the most abundant bird in North America at 0.25B. Lake St. Clair.
Went to my local spot for Green Hairstreak butterflies at 7am. Found none. Went back at 2pm, found quite a few and unlike the primadonna orange tips, who wouldn't settle or pose, these were the perfect models.
A large falcon that is endemic to South Asia including parts of India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. This is as large as a Peregine Falcon and taller than Saker Falcon, but more leaner unlike the bulky build of Saker Falcon or Peregrine Falcon. We sighted them on two days in action - they were hunting in the area and one of them was fighting with the Saker Falcon. They seem to be quite common in the desert regions and as a fan of falcons was delighted to be sighting them and seeing them in action.
This was sighted in Pokhran, again a desert region. The bird was hunting in the area possibly targeting the many small birds like Pipits, Larks, Crested Larks, Wheatears etc.. There was no dearth of prey. Unfortunately, we didn't see it with any catch though and we were in a rush to see the Indian Bustards, so had to move along.
Many thanks in advance for your views, faves and feedback - very much appreciated.
Unlike the Paper Wasp (Polistes Dominula) who is of a peaceful, gentle nature unless mercilessly provoked, the Tree Wasp (Dolichovespula sylvestris) is far more aggressive and caution should be taken when drawing near her. At first glance, the two look similiar, but the thorax of the Tree Wasp has only two large yellow dots and two "shoulder stripes" while the Paper Wasp has four dots, four stripes (two below the neck and two below the four dots) and less pronounced shoulder stripes. The most obvious difference, though, is that the Tree Wasp has black antennae and yellow legs, while the Paper Wasp has orange antennae and legs.

Unlike the United States, here this winter passes very boring, mild and quiet, with the exception of a few brief episodes like the one in the photo, due to an influx of colder air from central Europe which activated Bora/Burja wind and contrasting precipitation.
In reality it is the wind at 100km/h (on average!) that does almost everything, the precipitation was weak and the snowfall cover very modest due to the fact that despite a temperature below the freezing point, the snowflakes were mixed with freezing rain and sleet, due to unmixed Mediterranean mild air at altitude.
This made the snow mixed with black ice and the white was less white than pure snow, with a color towards gray due to the partial transparency of the gelicide.
Unlike this year, the ice was melting off the lakes to welcome
the waterfowl migrating back.
The waterfowl are arriving to ice on lakes and flooding in fields or fields still covered in snow in April of this year.
In a flood watch/warning for the next two weeks
It has turned much colder for the weekend with
chances of freezing rain and snow mix.
On the news last night, they showed a heron on a lake that was frozen with thick ice and it did not look happy.
Geese and swans have been flying over the house almost daily but for mating and nesting with weather and flooding not sure many offspring will survive.
Recent photos I have all have snow so went to my archives
today.
Unlike most of our lives, the Assaranca waterfall has continued flowing uninterrupted in the two years since I last saw it. There is something reassuring about this.
Unlike BURIDAN'S DONKEY, this donkey is not a donkey... He chose to have a drink! ;)
BURIDAN'S DONKEY is an illustration of a paradox in philosophy concerning the conception of free will. It refers to a hypothetical situation wherein a donkey is placed equidistant to a stack of hay and a pail of water. Since the paradox assumes the donkey will always go to whichever is closer, he will stupidly die of both hunger and thirst since he cannot make any rational decision to choose one over the other. The paradox is named after the 14th century French philosopher Jean Buridan, whose philosophy of moral determinism it satirises. (from Wikipedia, slightly modifyed)

Unlike most of the other monuments of Angkor, magnificent Ta Prohm, dedicated in 1186 by Jayavarman VII was left in a state close to its discovery at the beginning of the xxe century. The vegetation which the transperse throughout gives to the site an exceptional charm.

Unlike the recent post, we had a drab gray sky on this day. I decided on a monochrome rendition, accentuating the whites for, what I consider, a more artistic presentation; White-tailed Kites; Elanus leucurus;

Unlike yesterday's post of gulls, these are not flying high but are resting on the rocks and watching the sun go down...
Have a great week everyone!
Unlike my former upload I found this deer sticking his head out of a beautiful colourful autumn scene. This one is definitely not worth B/W.

Two of the species within the genus Erythroxylum, Erythroxylum coca and Erythroxylum novogranatense, both native to South America, are the main source of cocaine.
Cocaine is produced from the leaves of this plant.
Erythroxylum novogranatense is native to Colombia and Venezuela. Unlike Erythroxylum coca, it tolerates non-acidic soils and it is more adaptable and easy to grow.
The berries are not harvested or used commercially, as the leaves of the plant are the primary source of cocaine.

Unlike in the DC area, the variety of hummingbird species in Costa Rica blew me away. Many of them were new to me. They move so fast and are incredibly active while seeking nectar. It was a blast to watch.
Unlike most other herons, it feeds in relatively dry grassy habitats, often with cattle or other large mammals. It catches insect and small vertebrate prey disturbed by these animals. It also captures ticks and flies from cattle.
Unlike the other short stemed ones in the garden, this daylily is a more tradional one on long stems. Like the others it manages to persist in very poor soil and present a few flowers each year. The petals are narrow without much substance compared to the shorter ones. They're quite attractive bobbing in a slight breeze.

I'm combing through this year's photos one last time before retiring them from the hard drive. This image was uploaded to Flickr on Dec. 30, 2021.

Unlike most woodpeckers, flickers often feed on the ground. They are also one of the few woodpecker species that migrate.
Photographed at Connected Lakes SP, Grand Junction, Colorado.
5786 was built by the Great Western Railway in 1930 and, unlike many of its siblings, didn’t get scrapped by British Railways, but was sold on to The London Transport Passenger Board. 5786 is one of over 800 57xx Pannier Tank locomotives built. They were used mainly for heavy shunting, short-distance goods and branch line passenger duties. Built at Swindon, 5786 entered service in January 1930 at Aberdare shed. 5786 remained in South Wales throughout its life with the GWR and BR(W).
Its last depot was Cardiff Canton. In 1958 it was overhauled at Swindon and transferred to London Transport where it was painted Maroon and numbered L92. The next eleven years were spent working maintenance trains, goods traffic and shunting from Lille Bridge and Neasdon Depots.
Unlike me with the LV's U-boats in the previous post, an unknown photographer did much better, as seen in this image from my collection. Unfortunately, I have absolutely zero information on the image except for where it came from, which is the Hawk Mountain Chapter NRHS. Still, thought it was nice enough to share as we keep looking at this cool fallen flag operation. And of course, if anyone has information or is the photographer, please do let me know so that I can add it and give proper credit.
Unlike many of the Victorian piers the Whitby piers were not built as seaside attractions.. The main West and East piers, seen here, were built to provide shelter from the currents and storms of the North Sea. Although piers have existed at Whitby since Medieval times to facilitate trade and fishing, including whaling, the main structures that now form the East and West piers were completed in the first half of the 19th century, and both piers were extended in the early 20th century in an effort to control low water flow and a whirlpool at the harbour entrance.
An old abandoned grain elevator between the Canadian Pacific Railway Westfort Yard and the Kaministiquia River. There were originally built for the Consolidated Elevator Company in the early 1900s and are among the oldest elevators still standing in the city. Unlike most elevators remaining which are made entirely of reinforced concrete or brick, these are steel structures clad in corrugated iron (on the left) and some kind of ceramic tiles (on the right).

Unlike their brothers and sisters, this Mallard duck is very yellow. Attracting lots of people with cameras.
Completely unlike the fleur-de-lys, the lush dark red lily in the silver field of the coat of arms is a proud emblem of beautiful Florence. The presence of such a lily in the coat of arms explains the magnificent motto: «A flower in full bloom - so flourishes the blooming Florence.»
Anatole France used the image of the "red lily" as the title of his novel. "Red Lily" is a novel about love in the world of politicians and prudent businessmen.
The play based on this novel made a huge impression on the young Marcel Proust. The red lily, which gave the title of the novel, is not just a flower, but a symbol of Florence, where the love of the social beauty Countess Marten-Bellemm and the talented sculptor Jacques Deschartre blossomed.
