In 1968, the city agreed to turn over an L-shaped, quarter-acre section of the Kimball Avenue parking facility to the Chicago Park District, which installed playground equipment at the site. Beginning in 1987, the Park District began working with a community group to develop a plan for upgrading the park with additional playground equipment and plantings. Improvements were completed in part through residents’ active participation. Problems in an adjacent city parking lot in the late 1990s led to the transformation of that parking lot into a three-quarter-acre expansion for Unity Park. The Chicago Park District installed a new playground in the park.

Inspiration was a bit thin on the ground this week, so here are some metal symbols.

Ceremonies are the hardest part of a wedding to differentiate your photography. Although the venues may be different between the $500 and the $50,000 photographer, in general the basic actions, and what you have to capture, are the same. So I was happy to take a challenging situation (heavily backlit ceremony) and use it for a different take on lighting the Unity Candle.

The Silent Inauguration - Centennial Park - Nashville, Tennessee - January 20th, 2017

Objective journalism is hard to find these days. Mainstream media networks too often practice partisan politics. They let their political views cloud their reporting. I started a documentary project back in January. I wanted to attempt some photo journalism on some local political events. These events include the Silent Inauguration, the Women’s March and the Spirit of America Rally (aka March 4 Trump). I will be publishing a series of posts on my blog as my pictures are developed and scanned. I would love to hear our opinion on the photos and my reporting. Check out my Silent Inauguration post here: www.shutteringthrulife.com/american-as-apple-pie-part-1-1...

Unity Hall was constructed in 1887 at 3140 S. Indiana Ave. for the Lakeside Club, a Jewish social organization. It became the home of Cong. Oscar DePriest's Peoples Movement Club in 1917, Churches have occupied the building since the 1950s. It continued to deteriorate during the early 2010s, but has since been renovated into apartments.

The colors of the outfit represent unity. There are light colors in the top of the outfit from the white shirt and on the bottom from the light pink shoes while there are dark colors from the blazer and skirt which brings it all together.

Unity / Nooitgedacht

From the book 12 Sketches of Old Boston Buildings, by George R. Tolman, published 1882:

"No. 23 Unity Street. In this building English officers were quartered during their occupation of the city. After the evacuation of Boston, by the British, the owner of the house returned, and found it in a sorry condition. He missed a valuable desk, of which he could find no trace, until, happening on the Common, he found the missing article in one of the barracks, left vacant by the retiring troops.

The house was built of bricks, imported from England, about 1720-35. Yet a portion of the lower part indicates, by the English bond of the brick-work, an earlier date than the above; the remainder is laid with what was known to early Boston masons as the 'Promiscuous bond.' 'This bond, consisting of a course of headers, and from three to eight courses of stretchers, was in use from about 1720 to 1770.'

The buildings on the left were formerly of the same general character, but have been remodeled.

The mansion-house next below, the corner of which is shown on right of picture, was owned by Dr. Franklin, and willed by him 'to his dear sister, Jane Mecom, and by her, in trust, to Rev. John Lathrop, D.D., and Benjamin Summers, for her daughter, Jane Collins, to her grandson, Josiah Flagg, and great-grandchildren, Franklin and Sarah Green.'

The last-mentioned building displays some rather eccentric architectural features; one of which is, that while the common voussoirs and keys to arches of first-story windows are of brick, the two each side of the key are of solid wood. The reason of this is not apparent."
