Wilbert de Joode (1955) is a veritable research scientist of bass pizzicato and bowing techniques. A self-taught musician, he has been playing the double-bass since 1982. He began working in groups that improvised within a jazz framework. Other musicians were soon drawn to his idiosyncratic style, and in the mid 80s he played in groups led by Vera Vingerhoeds, Armando Cairo and Ig Henneman where he further developed his improvisation skills. He came into contact with such musicians as J.C.Tans, Rinus Groeneveld, Michiel Braam, Han Bennink, Han Buhrs (Schismatics) and Ab Baars.

De Joode is currently one of the most active bass players on the European improvised music circuit. His individual style and musicality transforms the double bass into an equal partner in the most varied ensembles. A personal tone colour, exploration of the outer registers, quirky improvisations and the use of gut strings contribute to an instantly recognizable and intriguing sound. The seventeen improvised pieces on his first solo cd Olo (distributed by ToonDist ( www.toondist.nl ) show how rich and complex his sound on the double bass is.

"Melbourne's iconic Manchester Unity Building represents a rare blend of art, science, culture and commerce. As a magnificent structure, as a monument to human endeavour and as a hub of personal interaction, it has a special place in the history of Melbourne and the hearts of its citizens as well as the city's economy.

Constructed in 1932 on the site of Stewart Dawson's corner (plus the adjoining site), it was the new headquarters of the Manchester Unity Independent Order of Odd Fellows (IOOF), a non-profit friendly society with a strong sense of tradition and the noble motto 'Friendship, Love and Truth'. The architect, Marcus Barlow, had drawn his inspiration from the 1927 Chicago Tribune Building in the United States.

At that time the tallest building in Melbourne and built in the modern commercial Gothic style, the Manchester Unity Building was described by the Melbourne Age as a 'Wonder Building', with 'every modern convenience for tenants and their clients'. It was far ahead of its time, in terms of both aesthetic splendour and technological sophistication.

Built at a total cost of almost £600,000 for land and buildings, it was of fireproof concrete-and-steel construction and faced with 400 tons of mother-of-pearl coloured glazed terracotta (or faience) tiles. Large plate-glass windows on the first floor and ornamental bay windows on the second floor gave distinction to the base of the building, as did balconies on the third floor. More than 10,000 panes of glass made up some 900 windows on the upper floors, with levels 2 to 5 being double glazed.

At ground and mezzanine levels there were 23 shops and 7 kiosks, and the basement contained a 'beautifully decorated and furnished' tearoom and café. A sub-basement housed secure vaults in which tenants could store documents, as well as large store rooms.

Throughout the ground-floor arcade, bold designs sand-blasted on a series of black-marble tablets and friezes illustrated aspects of Australian life, the services of the MU Order, virtues and other themes. They were complimented at mezzanine level by plaster relief work, 'as attractive as any art gallery'."

A dreary spring day in the Tetons...still beats any day in the Midwest :-) Not sure what the yellow ground cover was, but it provided a nice splash of color against those dark skies. One week from today we will be be enjoying some glorious mountain views in Glacier....can't wait to get there!!!! Lost my position at work today thanks to good old union bumping rights, but fortunately for me, I had another position to take; not exactly what I want to do, but in this day and age, I have to be thankful for even having a job :-) Have a great Friday, and as always, thanks for your visits and support. I will catch up with everyone soon.

The Wabash turn emerges from the trestle at Harbor Draw into winter golden hour lighting, splitting the single ground searchlights unique to this area as they head for Canada to interchange with CN. The setup on the island is certainly a fascinating one. The signal on the right is used for bridge protection against openings of the swing span bridge. Typically the only indications observed are stop or clear. Another signal is in place on the opposite side of the bridge for this same purpose. In fact, my very first post on Flickr was from that side of the bridge, which I'll link further below. The signal on the left however actually gives an indication for the track ahead going into Fort Erie, which may be approach or clear depending on the routing. The setup here is unique in the fact that throughout my various treks around Canada, I have never observed another set of searchlights this close to the ground. This is the southernmost tip of the CN Stamford Sub, extending less than a mile across the border before meeting up with CSX at CP 7 on the Niagara Branch. That little tidbit becomes all the more important, because these signals are the only set of active US&S searchlights in the western half of New York State. (GRS SA style searchlights from the NYC era would be a different story.) Thanks to CN, these are still in place and serving today.

While this photo dates back to my first year behind the camera, I had actually found myself on the island within the first month of having a camera, for a CMQ-led CP 246, nowadays known as 236 after CP's mass-resymboling project. Back then I don't think I had a proper appreciation for these signals, maybe just because of the peculiar placement of them. Searchlights have always been my favorite style of signal, but growing up I was more accustomed to the GRS SA style used by the Central, carrying over into the Conrail days, and ending with CSX in the late 2010s. Although I was familiar with the appearance of this style, I didn't get to shoot a proper set of these until a couple trips down to the Bessemer & Lake Erie in summer of 2021. Then again later in the year, on a few trips to Canada amid Covid-related border restrictions. My efforts on those trips were primarily focused on shooting these signals. Only after all of that did it finally click with me how significant the installation on Unity Island is.

With the knowledge that CN will be looking to overhaul and replace the aging searchlights across Ontario in the next couple years, I have to wonder how soon they'll get to these. Between CN and CP, plus one from NS, up to 10 trains a day will cross this island and its two bridges. Maybe that's still small enough of a number to stay under the radar for now.

Diversity: the art of thinking independently together.

Malcolm Forbes

When power leads man toward arrogance, poetry reminds him of his limitations. When power narrows the area of man's concern, poetry reminds him of the richness and diversity of existence. When power corrupts, poetry cleanses.

John F. Kennedy

Real cultural diversity results from the interchange of ideas, products, and influences, not from the insular development of a single national style.

Tyler Cowen

Today when I think about diversity, I actually think about the word 'inclusion.' And I think this is a time of great inclusion. It's not men, it's not women alone. Whether it's geographic, it's approach, it's your style, it's your way of learning, the way you want to contribute, it's your age - it is really broad.

Ginni Rometty

We need to give each other the space to grow, to be ourselves, to exercise our diversity. We need to give each other space so that we may both give and receive such beautiful things as ideas, openness, dignity, joy, healing, and inclusion.

Max de Pree

What I'm trying to do is get a change in the mindset so people move from a level of mere tolerance to total acceptance and eventually to celebrate diversity. If you feel comfortable with one another, it doesn't matter whether we live in which neighbourhood but we can interact with one another freely. It's a mindset.

Najib Razak

Diversity on the bench is critical. As practitioners, you need judges who 'get it!' We need judges who understand what discrimination feels like. We need judges who understand what inequality feels like. We need judges who understand the subtleties of unfair treatment and who are willing to call it out when they see it!

Debbie Wasserman Schultz

We need to reject any politics that targets people because of race or religion. This isn't a matter of political correctness. It's a matter of understanding what makes us strong. The world respects us not just for our arsenal; it respects us for our diversity and our openness and the way we respect every faith.

Barack Obama

Right now, when we're hearing so much disturbing and hateful rhetoric, it is so important to remember that our diversity has been - and will always be - our greatest source of strength and pride here in the United States.

Michelle Obama

Although this building is going through the process of becoming a World Heritage site, Frank Lloyd Wright's Unity Temple in Oak Park, IL, is in need of some serious repair, so serious that the building landed on the 2009 11 Most Endangered Buildings list compiled by the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

It's the title of this sculpture by leading Indonesian artist But Muchtar, which was unveiled in 1982 in Fort Canning Park in Singapore.

"The sculpture is made up of spheres .. Needle-like cones are gathered in the centre of the sculpture; pointing from different directions but implying uniformity as the shadows cast are intertwined. The artist has thoughtfully used shapes to create an asymmetrical balanced within the sculpture. There are five stilt-like structures pointing upward from the top of the sculpture. These resemble the five brown sheaves of rice stalks presented in the original ASEAN logo, one for each founding member from the 1967 union."

In this work, the artist displays objects from her collection of found natural materials alongside their cast or sculpted counterparts. Transported from their original contexts and reassembled into a pictorial inventory, these elements take on a new associations as Safdie reimagines them in various sculptural media - glass, bronze, steel, cement. Transforming individual objects and shifting their communal relationships reflects the artist’s ongoing exploration of the tension between concepts of unity and multiplicity, singularity and the collective.

With one of their 70 tonners down, the Belfast & Moosehead Lake borrowed Pan Am's Maine Central heritage unit for a weekend to run their fairground shuttles to the Common Ground fair. She's seen here crossing Route 139 in Unity, about the pull up to the station to let off passengers returning from the fair. They'll make a couple more roundtrips to the fair and back before calling it a night, and tying the set down by the station. On the adjacent track is an old Maine Central plow, and two rusty Bangor & Aroostook reefers, from that railroads potato hauling days.

It is the simplest of principles, it is the most difficult of principles.

Let us first be clear on what unity does not mean: it does not mean uniformity. Unity is oneness. Diversity lends strength to any group of people. Unity binds together diverse elements so that, by virtue of their many strengths, the whole becomes greater than the sum of its parts.
