I really should have put more thought into my paper choices with this one, it is a sonobe variation. But it is a really firm one. It requires putting the units into place before inserting any tabs into place. Because of the locking mechanism it hides irregularities wonderfully.

Watching some of these videos can make things seem a lot easier sometimes. So i always make it a point to watch them 2 or 3 times before i try them.
I think thicker paper would have made a difference. But you wouldn't guess watching her videos. I still don't know how she got this together without paper paper clips. I ended up using clothes pins, once it is built it is nice and tight, i like it.

it locks together really well and is hard to put down once you get started till it is done. but it is definitely one of those cases where neatness counts
it took me a second to figure out how to make the units for this ball. I had to take the time to make a big to see where I missing a fold

It is always interesting to see how things evolve over the years. Back when I was in highschool and I learned how to make these. It took two pieces to make each unit and 60 pieces to make a ball. Now it only takes 30 pieces of paper because someone took the time to design a new unit.

I think i am going to make another one neater one because once you figure the pattern to assemble it. it's really firm you can toss it across the room just be aware it is paper and will unfold while you are making it.

I found it in the BOS Convention 2013 Autumn magazine.
This one seems fairly popular because I saw it listed in several places in several languages. This one makes me happy I have been taking units of single units lately because I was afraid it would come out exactly like the starlight kusudama seen in the back of the picture
Unfortunately it took me while to make all 30 units because of issues with my hands.
Looking back I wish I had made it from smaller sheets of paper. The units are fairly simple, and only fold over themselves a few times. The whole ball unfortunately flexes quite a bit under its own weight when it gets to big. But the unit is really really forgiving on none perfect squares.

the units really are not all that difficult they seem like a variation
of a sonobe unit.
