Flat Poinsettia

Designer: Sansanee Termtanasombat

Units: 30 1x2 pcs

Tutorial: www.youtube.com/watch?v=udSWadI-IXI

From "Modular Origami Polyhedra" by Simon, Arnstein, and Gurkewitz. Technically not a stellation of the octahedron, which would be a stella octangula: an octahedron with a regular tetrahedron added to each face. Nor is it a triakis octahedron, which has an obtuse triangular pyramid on each face. I'm not sure what a correct name for it is.

I've always had a problem of making picture of red kusudamas: the picture

is always bad and imprecise.

This picture took me much effort and the help of my friend. So as the

result I've got one good picture and about 20 in trash.

I designed them several months ago already. But I have a problem of postponing "little" origami projects. It's faster to make a big great kusudama rather than little star or flower. And these ones were also photographed not once trying to get a proper image.

These are modular, pretty easy flowers. Each takes 2 sheets of paper.

It took a bit to make. It is not that is hard to make. The pieces just make slowly.

The pieces have an interesting curve to them.

the units allow a lot of different things to be built. I know you can build a ball with x24 or x60 units. and once they are put together, they don't come apart easily.

Stellated Icosahedron made from 30 Sonobe units. I used three different color patterns. Each 'stellation' (pyramid) has each of the three patterns and nowhere do units of the same color pattern interlock.

I think this is a truncated stellated octahedron. Please correct me if I’m wrong. It was made from twelve squares using diagrams found on page 56 of Tomoko Fusè’s great book, “Unit Origami: Multidimensional Transformations”.

I really like this one.

I have seen it in 1 side and 2 paper. I think it looks a lot better with dual sided paper it is really easy to get consistent results. I doubt it is overly durable. But i dont think it is going to explode sitting on the shelf.

I used 15 sheets of square Origami paper split into 1:2 rectangles for 30 pieces

I think it could be done with no glue, but after several hours og trying and failing

Вот тут есть пример kusudama.me/#/Birdy/Ultraviolet-N)

Strange, but beautiful unit. Smth in between Jade and Neo-sonobe (in

principle)

Proof that Chinese unit origami can be used for animals as well as inanimate objects. I made a chipmunk. I may stick on some facial features, but at the moment I like it how it is.

Yes I really like my fuse box to hold pieces in. I also use it for a size reference of my finished projects

This ball does not like thick paper at all. And relies on sharp angles. There are a few variations floating and the internet, and I believe it is called signet base.

I want to try to make a few od the variations over the next few days just because I really do like the way this one turns out. But my hands needs a few days from the thick magazine paper i used. This is probably one of the simpler variations, and an example of pre creases makes it possible. But it did require a lot of going back to check if I had the right shape. As usually neatness counts.

It also turned out really friendly to ripped pieces of paper since none of the outer edges are visible on the finished unit. Start color side down if you want to finish with it out. Looking at the unassembled units I am sure they are relatively easy to invert and would assemble. Providing an interesting line pattern, but it would still be one color.

There is always a bit of yin in yang and a bit of yang in yin 😃

For this model, I cut up printed copy paper into squares/half squares and I didn't have enough of one colour so I decided to mix it up with one of the same pattern but different colour. While there is an aesthetic of having a kusudama with one uniform pattern throughout, I think there is a beauty in having it a bit "infected" .❤️ 紙は一つの色が足りなかったから、少し変わりました。こういうふうにも悪くないと思います。⭐

It is always interesting to see how things evolve over the years. Back when I was in highschool and I learned how to make these. It took two pieces to make each unit and 60 pieces to make a ball. Now it only takes 30 pieces of paper because someone took the time to design a new unit.
