Out of production for a long time, a newly reworked version of the Observation Drone Mk02 has re-emerged in a run of Unique Observers. There will be no more editions of this figure released, only one-offs at undisclosed times. The Unique Observers will be released 2 at a time, all priced the same
Based on a 3" Vinyl Kidrobot dunny, the customs have entirely re-sculpted resin heads and should be considered non-posable artworks.
Backstory
"The MK1 Observation Drone was a very popular model, famed for it's clarity and robust build quality, so it wasn't long before the Mk2 was developed. Given a completely new head full of optics, these units were more compact, longer lasting and with greater mobility. One of the biggest problems with the Mk1s was that many were often damaged by predator attacks. When deployed in forests or jungles, many were jumped on from behind by Bears, large Cats and irate Squirrels. Making them bigger would have solved this problem, but would have seriously impacted their covert nature, so instead a trick learnt from the humble butterfly was employed. The rear cooling ports were fashioned into the appearance of eyes and the filter unit, a nose, tricking predators into believing they were looking at the front instead. No more sneak-attacks! As a last resort for the bold or persistent animals, two Tesla Coils were mounted on top of the unit with the ability to arc 160,000 Volts between them. Most animals considered a shock of this magnitude not worth their time no matter how many tasty, chewable wires lay inside"

Southwark Cathedral is unique among English Anglican cathedrals in being separated by little more than a mile and the River Thames from it's neighbouring diocesan church, St Paul's. This odd arrangement derives from Southwark being a young diocese, since despite being one of London's oldest churches, it has only had cathedral status since 1905. Surprisingly the new Southwark diocese wasn't even carved out of the London one, since everything south of the Thames had traditionally been part of the Diocese of Winchester.
The site goes back to Roman times, with remains of a villa beneath the present building. A church has probably existed here since the 10th century (first recorded in the Domesday book in 1086) though the present cruciform building is mostly the result of 13th century rebuilding. The church was then known as St Mary Overie ('over the river') and served a college of priests.
Following the Reformation it was stripped of it's collegiate function and redesignated as the parish church of St Saviour. For a while the parishoners rented the building from the Crown until they were able to buy it for their own use in 1614. Certain chapels ceased to be used and the building suffered a long decline, culminating in the early 19th century when neighbouring London Bridge was being rebuilt, and road enlargement encroached on the churchyard. There were calls to demolish the church but luckily preservationists won the day, though two projecting chapels were lost at this time.
Though the east end was repaired the neglect had taken it's toll on the nave and in 1832 it's roof was removed, leaving it open to the elements for seven years until it was tragically demolished and replaced with a cheap and nasty brick substitute. Happily this was itself replaced in 1890 by the present nave by Sir Arthur Blomfield, a very successful attempt to replicate the surviving medieval choir which restored harmony and dignity to the building in preparation for it's rise to cathedral rank in 1905.
Today the church is a haven of peace in one of the most unsympathetic settings of any English cathedral, hemmed in by roads, car parks and a railway viaduct that passes through the former churchyard! Somewhat choked by all this development, the exterior looks mostly Victorian, thanks to the new nave and general refacing of the older parts, except for the 15th century central tower. The interior however is a delight, and transports the visitor back to the 1200s, despite the newness of the nave and it's aisles, which blend beautifully with the medieval choir and transepts. The focal point of the interior is the high altar screen of c1520, adorned with niches containing statues (all Victorian replacements).
There are many tombs and monuments in the cathedral spanning all periods and styles, and several have been recoloured (thanks to a slightly over enthusiastic campaign in the 1960s). The most notable tombs include that of the poet John Gower (14th century) in the north aisle, and 16th century Anglican divine, Bishop Lancelot Andrewes in the choir.There is a modern monument to Shakespeare bearing his effigy (he is believed to have worshiped here,being close to the Globe and Rose theatres, his brother Edmund is buried nearby). Further medieval and later monuments are in the choir aisles, and a rich collection of Baroque wall tablets adorn the transepts.
The furnishings are generally Victorian, whilst the stained glass is mostly later, the most prominent being Ninian Comper's 1950s east window of Christ in glory and Henry Holiday's superb Pre-Raphaelite west window on the theme of Creation. Most of the Victorian glass was lost to wartime bombing, in it's place we have some fine modern windows in the south choir aisle by Lawrence Lee and Alan Younger, and the Shakespeare window by Christopher Webb.
At the west end is a display of medieval wooden roof bosses from the old nave (more have been reintegrated into the tower ceiling, which has a modern design by George Pace). To the north a large suite of rooms has recently been constructed to serve the cathedral's administrative functions.

I love playing with color and creating arrangements that are personal and custom. This compact arrangement is made in a frosted purple vase. The copper button mums add a splash of bright fall colors while the purple and burgundy from the dahlias and snap dragons create a dramatic look!
This would be an fun alternative to a traditional long and low centerpiece for thanksgiving!

Located at 1421 17 Avenue SW, this McDonald's Canada location has an interesting interior, even if some of it has been updated to the current interior design the company sports at its restaurants.
I travelled to the small Yunlin town of Xiluo 西螺 in Taiwan which is famous for its soy sauce making. Xiluo finds itself uniquely and fortuitously positioned as a place for preserving the traditional methods for producing soy sauce. The temperature and humidity levels are ideal for cultivating the fungus which ferments the black beans used in Taiwan’s particular brand of soy sauce, while the mineral-rich water from the area complements the smell and flavor of the finished product. The sauce and brewing methods developed in Xiluo became so known around the country as well as abroad. Today, when one mentions soy sauce in Taiwan, Xiluo is always the place that comes to mind.
Xiluo’s streets are still full of signs advertising different brands of soy sauce. Although not every household smells of fermenting soy beans, many are carrying on with their tradition. Small town of Xiluo continues to brew soy sauce using century-old methods. It is not difficult to find soy sauce in Taiwan, though high-quality sauce made in the traditional way is perhaps more of a rarity. The Wuan Chuang Soy Sauce Factory is one of the few places that not only preserves these centuries-old methods, but also allows visitors to make their own soy sauce.

Packaging to hold college work, custom job for Myles Palmer, we worked together on the Wot Gorilla? release through his label Idle Hands Club and came to me wanting a box to hold work for his exhibition. The card is machine cut, handscored then a white piece of card is glued into the base of the box showing white through the braille text.
Gloucester Cathedral is one of England's finest churches, a masterpiece of medieval architecture consisting of a uniquely beautiful fusion of Norman Romanesque and Perpendicular Gothic from the mid 14th century onwards. Until the Reformation this was merely Gloucester's Abbey of St Peter, under Henry VIII it became one of six former monastic churches to be promoted to cathedral status, thus saving the great church from the ravages of the Dissolution.
The most obviously Norman part is the nave, immediately apparent on entering the building with it's round arches and thick columns (the exterior is the result of Gothic remodelling). Much of the remainder of the building is substantially the Norman structure also, but almost entirely modified in the later Middle Ages inside and out, the result of the great revenue brought to the abbey by pilgrims to the tomb of the murdered King Edward II in the choir. It was this transformation of the Norman church that is credited with launching the late gothic Perpendicular style in England.
The gothic choir is a unique and spectacular work, the walls so heavily panelled as to suggest a huge stone cage (disguising the Norman arches behind) crowned by a glorious net-like vault adorned with numerous bosses (those over the Altar with superb figures of Christ and angels) whilst the east wall is entirely glazing in delicate stone tracery, and still preserving most of it's original 14th century stained glass. The soaring central tower, also richly panelled with delicate pinnacles, is another testament to the abbey's increasing wealth at this time.
The latest medieval additions to the church are equally glorious, the Lady Chapel is entered through the enormous east window and is itself a largely glazed structure, though the original glass has been reduced to a few fragments in the east window, the remainder now contains beautiful Arts & Crafts stained glass by Christopher and Veronica Whall.
The early 16th century cloisters to the north of the nave are some of the most beautiful anywhere, being completely covered by exquisite fan vaulting, with a seperate lavatorium (washing room) attached to the north walk as a miniature version of the main passages.
There is much more of interest, from 14th century choir stalls with misericords to the comprehensive collection of tombs and monuments of various dates, including the elaborate tomb of Edward II and that of Robert Duke of Normandy, eldest son of William the Conqueror. The stained glass also represents all ages, from the 14th century to the striking contemporary windows by Tom Denny.
Further areas of the cathedral can be accessed at certain times, such as the Norman crypt under the choir and the triforium gallery above.
My visit coincided with the major 'Crucible' exhibition of contemporary sculpture (September-October 2010), examples of which I will upload in due course.

London can be absolutely packed on Sundays and we don’t like people so we wanted something unique, something a bit eccentric and wacky, something different ... and we found it in God’s Own Backyard. Seriously, that’s the name of the place. Part museum, part gallery, very colorful, and very irreverent. Neon lights and collectibles from all over split almost equally between religious and porn/sex stuff. We loved it! It’s near Walthamstow Central on the Victoria Underground station but we would never have found it if it wasn’t for a Good Samaritan that pointed us to an industrial park. Life is good!
They have certain photography rules - you can take all the photos you want with a cell phone. You cannot use a DSLR unless you are a student. I saw a bunch of people using DSLRs so I used mine for a bit until the caretaker told me to put it away. We later had a chat - very interesting fellow. This place is only open on weekends since during the week it is a commercial operation - that is how they earn their money and open for free on the weekends. The electric bill is horrendous - I'm surprised they manage to stay open. We are so glad we found this place - it was well worth the journey.
