We celebrate light in our pictures. Understanding how light interacts with the camera is paramount to the work we do. The temperature, intensity and source of light can wield different photography effect on the same subject or scene; add ISO, aperture and speed, the camera, the lens type, focal length and filters…the combination is varied and multi-layered and if you know how to use them all, you will come to appreciate that all lights are useful, even those surrounded by a lot of darkness.
We are guided by three passions, simple but overwhelmingly strong, our longing to capture in print, that which is beautiful, the constant search for the one picture, and constant barrage of new equipment and style of photography. These passions, like great winds, have blown us across the globe in search of the one and we do understand the one we do look for might be this picture right here for someone else out there.
We want to thank you for your interest in our work and thanks for visiting our work on Flickr, we do appreciate you and the contributions you make in furthering our interest in photography and on social media in general.

Secretary Rita Landgraf welcomed about 80 mental health professionals, advocates and consumers to an April 1 conference, "Understanding Loneliness." Secretary Landgraf said loneliness is increasing, but especially for vulnerable populations such as people with serious mental illness, seniors, and people with other disabilities.
"As humans, we need those meaningful social interactions that people who care about us or provide," Secretary Landgraf said.
A 2010 AARP study of adults found that 40% said that they had been lonely, a figure that was double the rate in the 1980s.
The conference, sponsored by DHSS' Division of Substance Abuse and Mental Health, also included a consumer panel, experts on statistics and trends, and recommendations for reaching out to people with serious mental illness.

Southern / Modern - Rediscovering Southern Art from the First Half of the Twentieth Century - October 26, 2024 - February 2, 2025
The first exhibition to present a comprehensive survey of works by artists working in the American South in the first half of the 20th century
Created in collaboration with Georgia Museum of Art, the exhibition includes more than 100 paintings and works on paper by artists working in states below the Mason-Dixon line and as far west as those bordering the Mississippi River, as well as some artists living outside of the region who made significant bodies of work during visits.
Curated by the Mint’s Senior Curator of American Art Jonathan Stuhlman, PhD, and independent scholar Martha Severens, Southern/Modern: Rediscovering Southern Art From the First Half of the Twentieth Century takes a broad view of the South and is structured around key themes that traverse geographic regions, including time and place, race, family ties, and social struggles. It also takes a broad, inclusive view of the art of the region, incorporating the creativity and talent of women artists and artists of color across its various thematic sections to provide a fuller, richer, and more accurate overview of the artistic activity in the American South at the time.
"The names Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko flash to mind when thinking about the U.S. as the modern art epicenter at mid-20th century. What do Zelda Fitzgerald of Montgomery, Alabama or Dusti Bongé of Biloxi have to do with that history? More than any art narrative has said until now. A rich book published in conjunction with the exhibit “Southern/Modern” makes the case that modernism flourished in the South despite less recognition then and systemic exclusion since. The volume’s cover is Bongé’s “Where the Shrimp Pickers Live,” a 1940 oil fed by Bongé’s rent-collecting job on the Biloxi Back Bay.
The South’s painting legacy is hardly the most crucial part of southern history now under hard examination. Our era is retelling—make that telling for the first time—the truth of slavery, white supremacy and labor exploitation in the region’s DNA. Yet who paints and what is painted are questions overlapping the general reckoning. The Southern/Modern project attempts and delivers answers.
Do I, a lifelong Mississippian, sound thin-skinned that southern artists were shortchanged? Well, I am, but it’s also true. Consider the famous 1949 proclamation by the American Wing curator of the Metropolitan Museum of Art: “Little of artistic merit was made south of Baltimore.” Southern/Modern counters that verdict.
True, there have been shows on individual modernist southern artists, but Southern/Modern is the first to examine the region’s strand as part of the national modern fabric. The exhibit of about 100 paintings and prints centers on southern works between 1913 and 1955.
This kind of project is not just a real-time event, although “The New York Times” named the “daring and revisionist” show a Critic’s Choice. The ambition of Southern/Modern is to establish a basis for future art scholarship. Shows, after all, formulate our understanding of art movements. The understanding of Impressionism coalesced with the 1863 Paris Salon des Refusés. Participation in the 1951 9th Street Art Exhibition qualified a painter for the New York School abstract expressionist canon.
The essays in “Southern/Modern” define modern with a big M and small one, according to Jonathan Stuhlman, senior curator of American art at the Mint Museum in Charlotte, North Carolina and co-editor of the book. As an art term, modern means presenting artists who are “moving away from realism and toward abstraction,” he writes. But this project also includes painters modern in the sense that they frankly depict life around them. Regionalism versus modern is a false choice."

Understanding
The years of my youth, my sensual life --
how clearly I see their meaning now.
What needless repentances, how futile....
But I did not understand the meaning then.
In the dissolute life of my youth
the desires of my poetry were being formed,
the scope of my art was being plotted.
This is why my repentances were never stable.
And my resolutions to control myself, to change
lasted for two weeks at the very most.

Last month, my hubby gave me this book for our anniversary. It's been on my wish list for quite some time, and since I've been taking a LOT more pictures with this project, he thought it might be time for me to have this. I am starting to go through it slowly, so I can really understand, as well as try my hand out at the exercises.

Terre des Hommes started a pilot project in Ukraine to help children affected by the war.
'My Friend' is a mental health and psychosocial support initiative combining cognitive behavioural and emotion-focused therapy. This programme equips participants with physical and mental strategies for recognising emotions, understanding stress levels, and effectively reducing stress.
The programme includes 12 group sessions tailored for children aged 5 to 7 and their caregivers. In Ukraine, over half of the participants are internally displaced persons from frontline areas affected by military operations.
Through their participation, children and caregivers develop emotional awareness and learn several coping strategies to manage distress.
Storytelling is a central feature in the programme, with Lando the hare as the main character guiding the narrative. In each new session, Lando encounters a new obstacle he must overcome. The children also create puppets through which they express their emotions.
The pilot project, funded by Giro555, was highly successful. Many caregivers noted their difficulty discussing emotions and recognised that the programme benefits themselves and their children.

The large-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 marked a devastating escalation of the conflict following the 2014 annexation of Crimea and the occupation of parts of Eastern Ukraine. In response to this crisis, Cordaid has supported Ukrainians since 2015, providing crucial humanitarian assistance and fostering resilience through impactful partnerships with local Caritas organisations.
Caritas Ukraine and Caritas Spes swiftly deliver emergency assistance to conflict-affected regions nationwide. By prioritising local leadership, these partnerships empower Ukrainians to determine their needs and implement sustainable solutions.
Key initiatives include:
•Emergency Relief: Supporting displaced people in fragile and vulnerable circumstances in war-affected areas in the east with basic needs.
•Water Rehabilitation: Repairing damaged water systems and installing filtration units in heavily affected areas to ensure access to clean water.
•Healthcare Programmes: Establishing nine medical centres that provide integrated services, including primary healthcare, psychological support, and palliative care. These centres are designed to achieve financial sustainability through government support.
•Livelihood Recovery: Helping displaced people rebuild their lives through business training and start-up grants.
•Palliative Care Expansion: Meeting the rising demand for home and hospice care for displaced elderly and chronically ill, impacted by the ongoing conflict.
By late 2024, over 3.7 million people remained displaced within Ukraine, with 6 million more seeking refuge abroad. The war’s toll on housing, infrastructure, and mental health has created urgent needs. An increasing number of families deal with the loss of family members, mostly husbands, sons and fathers, and demobilised veterans are struggling to reintegrate into society.
Cordaid’s recovery programmes address these challenges by:
•Providing emergency relief to newly displaced individuals, particularly in eastern regions.
•Offering psychosocial support and rehabilitation for civilians affected by the war and for veterans and their families.
•Supporting essential utilities, including water systems, electricity, and winterisation supplies.
As the conflict continues, Cordaid remains committed to a dual emergency relief approach and sustainable recovery that considers new needs.
By strengthening partnerships with the Ukrainian Caritas branches and other local organisations, fostering local leadership, and ensuring financial sustainability, Cordaid aims to build resilience and restore hope for the millions affected by this devastating war.
Through collaboration, innovation, and a focus on evolving community needs, Cordaid is helping to create a path forward for Ukraine—one rooted in dignity, resilience, and hope for a brighter future.

"Without an understanding of time, we are lost, wanderers in a murk of experience where yesterday and tomorrow are seen only in broad strokes, banded by sunrise and sunset. For the vast majority of human history, those strokes had sparse embellishment, supplied by the occasional sundial and by a human eye far more attuned to the subtle nuances of sunlight than most people possess today." - Michelle Stacy "Clash of the Time Lords" (Harper's Magazine, 12/06)
