SAN DIEGO (NNS) -- “Unconditional Surrender,” a 25-foot, 6,000 pound statue by world-renowned artist J. Seward Johnson commemorating a famous World War II photo was unveiled Feb. 10 at Mole Park in San Diego.
Unconditional Surrender is a three-dimensional interpretation of a photo taken by Alfred Eisenstaedt of a Sailor kissing a nurse in Times Square, New York City on Aug. 14, 1945, following the announcement of V-J Day.
Edith Shain, the nurse memorialized in Eisenstaedt’s photo, and members of the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association Inc., attended the ceremony along with hundreds of San Diego residents.
“This statue brings back so many memories of peace, love and happiness,” said Shain. “There is so much romance in the statue; it gives such a feeling of hope to all who look at it.”
“During the moment of the kiss I don’t remember much, it happened so fast and it happened at the perfect time. I didn’t even look at the Sailor who was kissing me,” Shain continued. “I closed my eyes and enjoyed the moment like any woman would have done.”
Sailors attending the ceremony had the opportunity to meet the woman pictured in the photograph famous throughout the Navy community, and the world.
“This sculpture represents hope and freedom,” said Quartermaster Seaman Hannah R. Salyer, PCU Green Bay (LPD-20).
“It’s a classic symbol of a Sailor. I can’t put into words the honor it is to meet the woman that was in the photograph and to be a part of the official ceremony for such an amazing piece of work,” continued Salyer.
The ceremony also included World War II era dances and music, and gave people a chance to meet the lady from the famous photograph. Many attendees paid their respects to Shain and other Pearl Harbor survivors.
“This photo and statue still moves me to this day,” said former USS Pennsylvania (BB-38) Sailor Arthur A. Kowalski. “It’s nice to know that people haven’t forgotten about that moment in history. This moment is so precious and can never be duplicated.”
Unconditional Surrender was previously displayed in New York City in 2005 and Sarasota, Fla. in 2006. The statue made its way here, and will stand at the G Street Mole Park for duration of 2007 before traveling to its next home. The statue is owned by the Sculpture Foundation of Santa Monica, Calif., and is on loan to the Port of San Diego.
More than 1,000 people gathered at Tuna Harbor Park to view the dedication of the permanent bronze version of "Unconditional Surrender" on Feb. 16, 2013.
During the ceremony, the Port of San Diego formally accepted the 25-foot sculpture from the USS Midway Museum.

Shaun, 54, and Sharon Owens, 55, have been married for 28 years. They say the key to their longevity is their Christian faith. Shaun has lived in the city his entire life, while Sharon moved to the city in 1981 to start college at Syracuse University. Their anniversary is July 7.

Standing 25 feet tall along Sarasota's Bayfront is a sculpture that recreates that famous kissing photo on the cover of Life Magazine, marking the end of World War II in 1945.
I've seen many photos of this statue but wanted to try something a little different than than the usual full length view. I think this works well.

Vanita Rae Smith, Hawaii representative for Keep the Spirit of ’45 Alive, was jubilant as she talked about the 1945 Times Square victory kiss in front of a statue that depicts it in living color. Smith loves stories and imagery from the year WWII came to an end.
Smith unveiled the kiss statue in a small press conference behind the box office of Waikiki Shell.
For Smith, it’s more than nostalgia or even history. It’s about the future.
“WWII veterans worked hard, and in the 60s—even though most of them had never used the GI bill themselves—they sent their children to college” Smith said, “What are we doing with our education?”
Smith says she wants today’s Americans to be more united—united like ’45.
In the meantime, she is keeping at least one iconic image on people’s minds.
“We don’t have it permanently” she said “but we have it for a long time.” A long time is just enough time for the sculpture to visit the ship deck where Japan signed the Instrument of Surrender in early September of 1945.
After a public viewing, “Unconditional Surrender” will be repacked and taken to Battleship Missouri in Pearl Harbor where it will stay to commemorate the 66th anniversary of WWII’s end.

Finalmente coloquei em prática meu primeiro projeto fotográfico chamado: "Unconditionally"! Isso mesmo pra quem já ouviu essa música da Katy Perry deve saber no que me inspirei né? Realizei esse projeto por causa do preconceito que vejo todos os dias as pessoas cometendo, vamos parar com esse preconceito de achar que só porque as pessoas são do mesmo sexo elas não podem se amar! Mas é claro que elas podem. Todos temos o direito de amar quem quisermos, e as fotos desse projeto provam que o amor está acima de tudo! Fiquei simplesmente encantada em poder fotografar um casal tão lindo como esse. Só posso agradecer a Nika e a Carol pela oportunidade de retratar um amor tão sincero e intenso! Obrigada meninas!
Neste projeto quis capturar o amor sincero das duas, os toques, os abraços, os carinhos e a delicadeza desse amor. Preferi editar as fotos com pouca saturação para passar um ar de leveza e delicadeza. Espero que gostem!

Why does Pellegrini's flourish? It is drafty and crowded with uncomfortable seats. It may not have been painted since it opened over 50 years ago.
It flourishes because, when you go in there, you feel welcome. The mostly middle-aged, mostly Italian-born staff are relaxed, friendly and playful. When I go there, I know that I'll leave with more than just a shot of caffeine. I have been a member of their happy family for half an hour, nourished in the 'zone'. I glow just a little more as I go on to the next bit of my life.
—and the food is simple, home-made and delicious. In fact, many of their desserts I don't see elsewhere. The cream caramel is the best, with that slightly bitter marmalade sauce!
I am pushing the cameraphone to the limits in this night time shot. Probably too far, but sometimes the thought is more important than the perfection of the image.
